Julian grew up local to me, so there are a lot of people around with stories about him. My teacher said he played with him at an open mic when he was 9 years old, and he absolutely just tore it up. Julian is the example of godly natural talent and probably a ridiculously solid nervous system, but I think what got him to this point at age 16 was sheer determination. From age 5 he knew he wanted to be a guitar player, and he was just always learning from that young age. We can all learn from that

Julian was already great. What blows me away is Randy's comping, a jazz master.

As good as he is here, the progress he's made since then is even more astounding.

Forget the chops, the musicality at that age is mindblowing

I think I hear a lot more bebop lines in Julian's playing at this age than even some of the videos on KZbin from his early 20s. Even though he has his own creative style it still seems his earlier playing was rooted in the jazz tradition.

oh man Julian is so incredible as always. But the comping man? Is so awesome!

The "comping man" is the great Randy Vincent, Julian's teacher for many years. Randy has quite a few excellent books.www.shermusic.com/9780997661743.php
