Roy Estrada on bass, Andre Lewis on keys, vocals by Roy and Andre and Napoleon Murphy Brock. This recording was live in Japan, the rest of the album was studio. Black Napkins was his equivalent to Dark Star by the Grateful Dead, many different live versions, all unique and wonderful. Speaking of which ... would love for you to check out the version of Dark Star from the album Live Dead, it is so beautiful.

I have a confession - I listened intently to this channel and subscribed a few years ago. some time back you made a comment how Zappa wasn’t an accomplished guitarist, then I stopped listening an unsubscribed. I’m glad you kept an open mind and appreciate his artistry and so I’m back. Thanks!

You seriously need to hear Pink Napkins from Shut Up And Play Your Guitar. His playing on it is absolutely beautiful.
@BobBenson-qz8lp3 ай бұрын
Better version than shut up is live Halloween 1977 during Franks ultimate prime peak. Frank declined a bit with Vinnie Colaiuta. Tinsel Town sales crashed. Joe's garage was too drum reverbed.
@mrwiffler99423 ай бұрын
@@BobBenson-qz8lp I disagree very strongly with you on this. I find the Halloween version to be awful. Possibly one of his worst solos....just a barrage of rock cliches from the start and those terrible synth sounds. Pink Napkins on the other hand is a work of art.

I saw Frank Zappa at the Leroy Concert Theater in Pawtucket Rhode Island in 1976. I remember it as one of my favorite concerts, and I’ve seen hundreds. I also remember Frank telling the audience how surprising it was to find the venue acoustically perfect. Unfortunately, the building was razed decades ago and there’s a CVS there now.

Later on in his career, he would throw in dissonant notes that he got from his study of Stravinsky and Varese. Frank also had parametric equalizer circuits built into his guitars so he could feed back on particular notes, and get that half-cocked wah wah sound.

This is a four minute excerpt of a much longer performance. In '75/'78 there would be multiple solos and it could go on for about half an hour (like that version in the Zappa in New York 40th aniversary box set).

It won't be an exact quote, but "the most important note is the one you just played, because without knowing that you don't know where you're going next" . . . he never tried to force a solo back to where it 'should have been', but to go with it and gently shift things.

The information you were given seems wrong. This is Frank Zappa live in Osaka, Japan in Feb. 1976. The band is FZ on guitar, Roy Estrada on bass, Andre Lewis on keys, Terry Bozzio on drums with backing vocals done by Roy, Andre and sax player Napoleon Murphy Brock. Edited for the album, the original piece recording has a sax solo.

@Royalle_with_Cheese4 ай бұрын
@@Alix777. But that was Frank's genius. He could take his live guitar solos, warts and all, and tighten them up to flow more smoothly. And he did that in the 70s without the editing software we have today. He used his ear, razor blade and tape to make the solos better for release. This Black Napkins solo is from a much longer song that includes a sax solo by Napoleon Murphy Brock. On The Bus, from Joe's Garage, is a heavily edited solo from Inca Roads. I find his editing skills to be part of his overall genius.

"Alum Holewuff ossum. Dem sounds, daze all o'er diplace." (Dead Sea Scrolls) Love me some Frank, and look forward to learning more about Allan Holdsworth, who I see hails from Bradford, in Yorkshire, a mere 15 miles from the ancestral home. If Frank AND Nick like him, he has to be great. Surely I know his work. Is there one that stands above the rest? Those flange sounds were amazing.

Love this cut and most of this album👍👍🎶🎶🎆🎆Love that there are more Zappa fans out there on the channel requesting besides me (since I haven't seen R.G. in a bit). Marley was digging it too. Supertramp and Frank in one day. Niiccee. The Alan Holdsworth from the 70's you might enjoy was 1975's Lifetime when he was in Tony William's Lifetime band. Holdsworth says it was a major influence on his future projects.

When U.M.G. bought the Zappa catalogue, I thought that was the end of it for sponsoring his music. Since his picking technique was criticized on "Fifty-Fifty" (which I put on as an example of Ponty with F.Z.), I was going to suggest things like "The Perfect Stranger" or "...Low Budget Orchestra", but I think I've already put a wide variety of music on the channel, and being a retiree, money is limited. I still like Believe It and I.O.U. .

Excellent reaction to a beautiful song. The guitar solos makes a bit more "sense" for lack of a better word when listening to the unedited version of the song. (This version is an album edit so he could fit all material he wanted on the album). There is a _stunning_ sax solo in the full version....it's live, of course. Frank's memory retention is phenomenal as he mimics some of the higher notes on the sax as best he can on his Gibson SG. If you have a chance, here's the link.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn-Zf6GvaM93mq8
