After awhile, you realize that it doesn't matter what Zappa writes. Because of his superior writing and playing skills, along with his ability to always select top-notch musicians, you can't miss.

Another great unreleased gem from the vault, it's unbelivable the amount of music he produced in such a short lifetime, this one was live from the 1972 big band period.

I loved the sense of danger at a Zappa concert, that Frank would, with a certainty, have everybody including the band, on edge. You were witnessing living music of the highest caliber.

Chills down the spine when the horns come in after the build at 4:20 - 4:30. Powerful band behind him on this one, and one of Zappa's best solos.

Great track for sure and also a very special Zappa period. This album features live recordings from the Petit Wazoo tour (Oct-Dec 72). A slightly condensed group from the Grand Wazoo album recording. A group of awesome musicians. The slide guitar solo in the middle is from Tony Duran. Check out the other posthumously released recordings from this group (and the original Grand Wazoo). Personel: Dave Parlato (father of the incredible jazz singer Gretchen Parlato) bass, Jim Gordon drums, Gary Barone trumpet, Aerle Dumbler sax and oboe, Tony Duran slide guitar, Glenn Ferris and Bruce Fowler trombone, Tom Malone (trumpet, trombone, tuba, saxophone)

Dave Parlato on bass, who can also be heard on the songs Zoot Allures and Filthy Habits... This Imaginary Diseases album was culled from the 1972 "Petite Wazoo" tour which included horns to play the jazz repertoire of Grand Wazoo and Waka Jawaka... All the tracks were mixed and mastered by Zappa in the 70's but never released and Joe Travers retrieved this gem from the then intact Zappa vault, released in 2006...

Dan mentions Grateful Dead (maybe Garcia's tone on China Cat Sunflower?) and Sifa mentions Lou Reed. Odd how often GD and VU intersect: even their bands were called the Warlocks early on.

I don´t know why but for me the tune has a kind of arabic feel. Perhaps the harmony. But what matters is that it gets into you. And it's true, good old Frank never disappoints

Note: This is just an excerpt from a much longer collective improv - another excerpt (a couple of horn solos) was released separately as the track Trudgin Across The Tundra. This track is one of the reasons Imaginary Diseases is one of the most maddeningly misconceived Zappa releases. (And if it's one of Frank's own constructions, that's no excuse). Both musically and on general principle, events like this should be released uncut as history-as-it-happened. But the album Imaginary Diseases is very specifically weighted towards Frank's own solos - this, from one of his most numbingly boring guitar eras (I blame the rhythm section) - at the expense of the rest of the band, almost all of whom were better improvisers than him.
@paulfenwick8767 Жыл бұрын
I "like" this but for me, it hasn't aged well. Sounds a bit outdated for 1972 even. A jam really and even the guitar is a bit hit and miss for Frank's standards. I think the fact that Frank never saw fit to release it at the time or even in his life time shows where it stands in Frank's reckoning. No doubt the zealots know better than Frank though🤣 One of the plus points though is it's a positive step away from, by Frank's standards, the dross of Flo and Eddie. Also, all this said, it's a country mile ahead of anything we heard last week!

@@chazblitz On listening to this, you wouldn't know it was by a ground breaking composer if you were outside the "Zappa family", would you Chaz. I get what you mean though, that's why I thought it sounded dated for even 1972.

@@paulfenwick8767This period in Zappa history is kinda weird. As you mentioned, the Flo and Eddie period was the low point and then this period where he was still fucked up from his trip to jolly old England🤣. For me, it was all uphill (mostly,) from here.
@paulfenwick8767 Жыл бұрын
@@chazblitz Yeah, but personally I think the enforced sabbatical was a wake up call/kick up the ass he needed. I agree it was mostly up hill from here right to the very end.
@shoutinchuck3363 Жыл бұрын
@@chazblitz Came back today for another listen. Now that you mention it, I do hear some Blind Faith there in the beginning. My initial take was that I heard a mashup of Grateful Dead (late 60s vintage) and Quicksilver Messenger Service (jams like "Mona" or "Who Do You Love"). The beginning of the "boogie" section had me thinking of Allman Brothers, even the drumming. But the final 2 or 3 minutes sounded like classic Zappa to me. Just my take.
