Amazing how the Ikettes were able to adapt and do their parts, never having practiced with the band before. This had to have been some of the most complicated music they had ever performed. Not to mention the weirdest.

This is one of my favorite Zappa videos, the master at work. First and foremost, you see he's having fun and so is everyone else, but how about the talent in that room? First of all, as Napoleon goes through his vocal gymnastics, his singing is just so on the beat and strong, a true professional. And I love the adorable, talented Ikettes. The lyrical content belies the complexity of the piece, so many changes and parts moving at breakneck speed. This is what you show when you want people to see Zappa's genius at work. Amazing.

It's so great seeing younger people discover Frank's music nearly 30 years since his passing. I started with Freak Out and remember saying to my roommate in 72 after listening to The Grand Wazoo "someday this will be classical music". The seeds have been sown and people born after his passing are watering and tending the garden. Thank you guys!

I know this song by heart....but to see them do it essentially "live to tape" is stunning. I always considered this to be a one-track at a time overdub, because it is so fast and complicated. Frank was so amazing....as were all these musicians. Big respect for the Ikettes being able to follow this on the spot with little advance notice...

Frank's original release of this piece wasn't from this studio recording. It's on Live at the Roxy and Elsewhere. He added overdubs to the live performance then released that version.

I'm amazed how far you lovely people have come with regard to FZ. I remember your first reaction which was Andy and you were completely out of it. I urge you to listen to yourselves again. And now you are so sophisticated and knowledgeable about what he did. I discovered him in 1974 when I was fourteen. I don't think people that age listen to that kind of stuff. And you are way younger than I and I appreciate your appreciation

Good point Dan about hindsight...It was not until the internet was created around mid 90's that I got to see my first video's of live Zappa...We were starved in Australia and he only toured twice in '73 and 76 and I was a teenager and cashless in those days....when the first download sites exploded it would take a week to download a cupla megabites of video footage....the copper phone line was not fast....there is tons of footage in the vault that required saving...Zappa recorded everything and was a visual artist before audio.

I have mentioned the Zappa documentary that Alex Winter made in many different reaction videos, so this may be a repeat. He was given permission to 'sift' through the Zappa Vault to help create as well as talk to musicians that played with him. I was thankful it was about the music. His outspoken political/religical views could be a whole other docufilm well worth watching.

I don't think it was from these sessions, because the Ikettes sang on both Over-Nite Sensation and a couple of tracks from the next album, Apostrophe(') and this was done to augment the live ROXY & Elsewhere album, but during the former sessions, which included Tina Turner, Tina was very excited about what they were doing and asked Ike Turner to come in and see the session. Ike looked in, said "What is this shit?" and demanded that the girls not get credited on the albums. More than that, Ike insisted that Frank pay them scale. $25. each per song. Frank knew that his music was very demanding and would take more rehearsals/takes, so he wanted to pay the girls more. Ike said scale only. Whatta prick! You could see in this video that Lynn and Debbie were having a blast. None of them were credited on Over-Nite Sensation. Frank managed to credit them (Lynn and Debbie) by first name only on Apostrophe(') and as Debbi (dropped the "e" for some reason) and Lynn on ROXY & Elsewhere.
@DWHarper62

Actually, $25 per hour x 7.5 hours = $187.50 paid to each singer...
@Royale_with_Cheeze
@Royale_with_Cheeze Жыл бұрын
@@DWHarper62 Turns out we're both correct. According to the same Wiki page, your statement is correct as well as this *Frank Zappa wanted to use backup singers on the songs "I'm the Slime", "Dirty Love", "Zomby Woof", "Dinah-Moe Humm" and "Montana". His road manager suggested The Ikettes, and Ike & Tina Turner were contacted. Ike Turner insisted that Zappa pay the singers, including Tina Turner, no more than $25 per song.* So, Frank did pay them by the hour, although Ike only wanted him to pay them per song. Probably because that's all he paid them, and he didn't want Frank giving them any ideas of a pay raise.

Great to see your reactions to Frank's genius. Saw him twice here in the UK in what I think was his most 'accessible' phase in the mid/late 70s. Like a lot of people I then bought everything new that came out and worked my way through the extensive back-catalogue. FZ's one of those 'you get it or you don't' musicians though on a technical and composition level he was (is in my mind) objectively an uber-talented person. I honestly think that his work may not be fully appreciated till long into the future when it can be dissociated from the rest of the contemporary rock genre (which I love also). I think guitarists particularly rate and appreciate him for obvious reasons (I'm thrashing around in the foothills by comparison). I was slightly . . . embarrassed is probably the word . . . when I found myself watching reaction videos . . . I mean 'why'? On reflection - and this may be obvious - for me it's great to see people experiencing the magic for the first time and it's as close as I'll get to my own experience. Actually I can still remember where I was when I heard Frank for the first time and the song; someone in our student flat at Uni played Camarillo Brillo and the minute i heard the the first little guitar lick after the 1st line its was like being stuck with a cattle-prod. I leapt up and ran upstairs, burst into the room and said "Who on earth is THAT?". Never stopped since then. Really enjoying your channel, just going to watch Dinah-Moe Hum ❤

ZZZZZZZZZZZ...We've heard this before. What is it with these repeats? Senility or the memory retention of a gold fish? Love the finished article but find this unnecessary. OK, we see how Frank does stuff, but this isn't a song reaction and would better be on Music Maniacs. Musically, it's 2nd rate and doesn't feature on the finished article, which says a lot. For me, this is the ZFT scumbags taking the piss and exploiting the gullible and staining Frank's memory. What next "Cheepnis...how we booked the studio" or "Cheepnis...How the camera man pressed his buttons"??? Linda and Debbie from the Ikettes
