In the case of Joe's Garage, the original was half-speed mastered and FZ was never happy with the results. Those may be the versions that are on Discogs for sick money. The new version (2012) is a revelation. In the case of Orchestral Favorites, they found the original tape with the tones to align the tape machine as well as using the original master tapes. After a legal battle the material was eventually released during on 4 individual albums in 1978 and 1979: Zappa In New York, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt and Orchestral Favorites. Again Orchestral Favorites is revelatory in the new mastering. Previous CD and LP versions (Rykodisc/EMI) were often created using remixes that FZ did. The 2012 versions (the ones you are reviewing), in most cases, revert to the original versions using the original sources or as close as possible. For some fun, check out www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/index.html It has the differences listed for each version and will tell you which ones (in the authors opinion) are the ones you NEED.

Frank dominates with Elmore James on the left and Stravinsky on the right. He uses the strangest tools to rule and reign. One of Frank Zappa's final performances is the blockbuster "G-Spot Tornado" that marks the end of the album. With this song he overcame his illness, marched on stage in Frankfurt, conducted the ensemble and received the greatest applause of his life. An artist like him will never appear again

Frank Zappa's catalog is the most intetesting music I have ever heard. I truly believe he was a modern composer that used rock n roll instruments. Once you understand that, his music is heard differently. I really don't think he wanted to use lyrics in this music but was forced to because he did need to sell records and that's what people want. Therefore a lot of his lyrics are very sarcastic and he was even mocking a lot of his own audience at times. There will only be one Frank Zappa!

Hello Michael, Fantastic video...being a dedicated Frank Zappa music collector I also think these reissues are fantastic. Great job by The Zappa Family Trust and Joe Travers. But as much as I love the vinyl reissues...the CD reissues are where the gold is...CD boxsets like The Hot Rats Sessions...or Lumpy Money. ..Meat Light...or even the new Mother's 1970 collection gives you a whole world of music that has been unreleased or versions not heard before. ..even full album remixes in Mono that frank made before he died. So yeah I love the vinyl ...but Zappa fans should really explore the CD reissues as well. Mark Anthony K Projekt Gemineye

Have people heard the extended version of ‘Uncle Remus’? Excellent.A song I have a story about proving how afraid of his music some people are.At a party once a friend put a mix CD on that began with said song and they listened to and liked the song but towards the end when I told them who it was he took the disc outside and smashed it! Shameful.I have caught out a number of friends before who hear say an instrumental track of his & insist they want a copy they like it that much but change their mind when I tell them who it is.Sad or what.I hope the remix on the new ‘Apostrophe’ is the full version?

How strange, ahead of seeing this post today I'd dug out and listened to some of my FZ/Mothers albums (I have Freak Out, Uncle Meat, Hot Rats,Weasels, Guitar, & Burnt Weenie Sandwich (a favourite), in this series. All excellent. I also have the 1972 first UK issue of Ruben and the Jets and this sounds good. The remastered version might be better still though I'd like to see an audiophile vinyl release of the remastered and expanded Ruben and the Jets: 'Greasy Love Songs'.

@@paulb111 No one ever mentions the other remixed parts for some reason. The new bass and drums are atrocious in my opinion. Great video Michael. There was a hideous remix of We’re Only In It For The Money released late on where Frank removed the original bass & drums (Estrada/Black/Mundi) and replaced them with Arthur Barrow & Chad Wackerman. There’s a rumour that the original master tapes were lost but I think he’d just drunk too much coffee! The original (hopefully your mix too) is incredible! A few I’d recommend if you’ve not got are Studio Tan & Grand Wazoo.

Whilst Frank was clearly a musical genius I think he got obsessed in the 80’s by technology to the detriment of the sound production. I saw him in 84 and he and the band were blindingly amazing. The electronic kick & snare he made Chad Wackerman use ( and Scott Thunes’ flanged picked bass) just sounded lame. Obviously he was replicating the “rocking teenage combo” sound and possibly Devo. The drum production on “You Are What You Is” (David Logeman) and all earlier albums are much more natural and warmer ... in my opinion. 🥁
