I am 58 years old and of course I know Zappa. I for some very strange reason thought most of his music is just a bit too weird for my taste. *Update * How oddly wrong I was! In just the last couple of days I have listened to a lot of his music and I am turning into a complete Zappa Freak... Great music!

His music grows on you. I hated Billy the Mountain when it came out in '72. I love it now. That shows that Zappa's music is eternal. I like the Playground Psychotic version the best. Especially around 20 minute mark where the keyboard starts the solo and Aynsley does a great job of drumming. Starts slow and increases with intensity. Aynsley drummed on this song too.

Possibly my favorite solo, on any instrument, in any kind of music. My favorite Zappa album, too, and I started with the Verve releases in the 60s. Thanks for looping me into bliss, nailheadparty. To the thumbs down listeners, may the offspring of a thousand spiders infest your underwear.

Couldn’t agree more about Waka / Jawaka, and this is a great track which includes Zappa’s collage technique as different sections cut to each other. And yeah, that’s an incredible solo, but it’s not Frank playing, which may put a lot of fans off. Personally I think he could have collaborated more - having confident musicians involved softens some of Frank’s rough edges. I have to say though, looping through the solo over and over kills any of the magic coming out of the transitions between sections.

Yeah, obviously not Zappa on the steel solo. That's "Sneaky Pete" Kleinow. I probably won't listen to this again, but I sure enjoyed the novelty of it. Time to spin the album for the thousandth time.

@@SmileyLovesMusic the contrast with Zappa’s style is clear, but I think Pete impersonates Frank at times, and it’s really interesting to think that Frank appreciated his playing, even though it’s from the ‘straight’ world that he was often critical of.

I can't imagine anti-drug FZ, co-founder of Straight Records, bringing Kleinow in on a session if he didn't appreciate his playing. Sneaky Pete had been a fixture in LA as long as Frank. They probably influenced each other.

I understand the idea your thoughtful comment represents and agree w/the spirit of your intention. That being said, given enough time and consideration, even FZ's prolific and multi-genre output can indeed be classified in a number of meaningful ways for a number of purposes including edification, marketing and having fun coming up with new terms to describe a myriad of Zappa joints and tracks that already hold various labels and are classified as falling into one or more genres. But again, I get it, and the spirit of your thesis (that "pure" genius, perhaps as opposed to tainted genius(?), and the works of said genius defy easy classification, at least in terms of disciplines like music where opinion, personal taste and even caprice are involved. In a larger sense, genius can be classified in a number of ways as can said genius' output be it in the sciences or humanities (although in some cases less so in the later which I believe is part of your point). Excuse me, I'm just being a smartass for no good reason even if technically I've made solid assertions. Your statement and its meaning are well-intentioned and speak to the musical savant-level abilities and output of Zappa & his many phenomenal co-musicians and their amazing music defying easy classification as it's so very "uber". Apologies.

(Edit): Thanks for doing this homage to this solo...... Dream come true. Bravo. In similar cheerful fashion and just as sweet are the keyboard solos of David Sinclair on the title track of Caravan's "In the Land of Grey and Pink" album. Just saying. On a personal note: Late 1993 or early 1994. I'd heard of Zappa's name, but none of his work. After he passed away, chanced upon "Peaches en Regalia" on _(strange, but)_ MTV. Surely, head over heels in love at first hearing. After "Hot Rats", "Waka/Jawaka" was my second Zappa album. As well stated by many viewers here, I wished Kleinow's solo would never end. It seems that in life without internet and less toxic congestion, people used to listen to music properly and spared time to discover, appreciate delicate matter. --Waving from Istanbul.

Thank you thank you! After 40 years of feeling briefly entranced, long term earwigged & mystified by the studio versions outro I cameto listen once again again (Segue from my T heads revival & the similarly savant brilliance of the pedal steel on naked’s track totally nude) When I saw extended edit and thought could it be? could it possibly be? I always suspected there just wasn’t more to it, and my response to the studio versions outro was normal. all just another product of FZs absolute humor, brilliance, mastery & mind control. To the commenters looking for more sneaky Pete I’m not sure if it’s him or not but dig deep on some Steely Dan for some wonderful ps sounds & let’s never forget the good ol’ Grateful Dead

Frank Zappa stood center with his Gibson guitar around his neck with a microphone & a music sheet stand. He turned his back to the audience many times to formally conduct his band. Greetings from Warsaw, Poland. I'm one of the biggest fan of Frank Zappa. By the way: Frank Zappa stwierdził, że żyjemy w Oceanie Głupoty. RIP Frank Zappa
