He is so damn observant and on point mentally. I'm glad that he didn't drink or use any drug, besides tobacco. As a lover of beer and ganja, I know we need someone sober in order to be our own honest critic, as indulgence brings a certain dullness to the mind. Frank provided sharp observations and analysis of rock 'n' roll and the counterculture that kept many of its members from becoming to deluded.

@BlueCougar Yes, the best talk show hosts were Dick Cavett and Jack Paar. When Paar left the "Tonight Show" and Johnny Carson took it over, the level of discourse plummeted. Cavett was a writer for both and remains a national treasure to say the very least. His NY Times Online column is brilliant and seeing him appear somewhere in person is fantastic. The current television talk shows, of course, are merely infomercials.

@myroncope I still love punk music today, I was listening to the Subhumans yesterday in my car...but you are 100% correct, it wasn't an incredible musical talent, it was about fashion and feeling, and it was a time when people were angry and needed an outlet. People are still angry today, but that outlet has been sold off for advertizing and we need to find a new release.

@myroncope Thats the difference between the scene and the artist/musician. When the music became dilluted, and the message watered down, the fashion and scene took over. Through-out the last 30 years of punk, only a handfull have made sure the message was the most important. Dead Kennedys, Descendents, up through Propagandhi today, the members of some of the most original punk bands didnt crutch on an attire.

***** I'm not so sure Frank would disagree with Donald trump on most issues , Frank wasn't around to experience social justice warriors , and colleges who force socialist ideology on all students , Frank hated feminism & socialism , he believed in fair trade as well as capitalism to the point he debated & beat most prominent socialists of the 60's , I watched as Bill Ayres & his weatherman thru Frank from the stage into the orchestra pit then set the building on fire , I've heard him comment on anarchism many times & his views would be more in line with Trump than against Trump .

In his last years Zappa disavowed either party, but said himself, in an interview that is on KZbin, that he was a registered Democrat. He described himself as socially liberal, but fiscally conservative. Yet he HATED the Republicans. Their threatening Czechoslovakia, President Václav Havel specifically if they allowed Zappa to be their "Special Ambassador to the West on Trade, Culture and Tourism" really earned them his ire and contempt. If you know anything about the man, have read any of his lyrics, or his autobiography, you'd know enough to realize he would have despised Trump and considered him a nonintellectual moron. He would have had nothing to do with the man. Disagree if you want, but the record speaks for itself. When Zappa considered his run for President, he said he would do it as an independent. Not a Democrat, Republican OR Libertarian. That tells you a lot right there. The Libertarian party, and Ron Paul were present even in the eighties, so it can't be said it was because he wasn't aware of them.

You're right about the ramones being the first but frank is correct about everything else. I LUV the Pistols but it is true I read a lot about them. Music was the last thing that happened w/ da pistols, it was all about fashion and attitude and gimmick. The last priority was the music. Punk is about what you said but it doesn't mean all the bands were like that. Some of them were just money grubbers doing a trend. Malcom told them to dress and play like that, they didn't originally want to.

The Slits? Zappa bought an album by The Slits? They were a part of the British punk scene; a direct result of the Pistols. Read Greil Marcus's Lipstick Traces. And Frank -- as great a mind as his was -- didn't catch the visceral rawness of the Pistols moment? The Pistols' entire reason for being was a reaction to the stodgy bloat that by the mid-seventies rock had become with bands like Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Foreigner & REO Speedwagon (i.e. complete dreck) raking in bank.

He didn't get the origins of Punk right because the Sex Pistols came out after The Ramones, who came out after The New York Dolls, who came out after MC5 And The Stooges, who came out after The Velvet Underground. If anything, The Sex Pistols signified the end of the classic Punk era.
@XapnoMapkc
@XapnoMapkc 7 жыл бұрын
The Ramones, Dolls, MC5, Stooges and The Velvet Underground were all great bands. The influenced musicians who later became Punks. But they were not Punk. The Sex Pistols were. The Sex Pistols appearance on the Bill Grundy show marked the day that Punk Rock ended, because it was the day that Punk began for the mass market.

You mean they were terrified they might actually learn how to play? Possibly, however I doubt that's possible with their level of talent. I have to admit Sid Vicious took the best precaution and died (although in his case learning to play was the least possible option). Damn shame he did it so late though.

He was asked specifically if there was anything in that particular scene that he liked and he answered, and therefore there would be aspects of their act which would fall into the fabricated attitude of punk. As for holier than thou, he was simply stating that he was not to be associated with punk music, and frankly I don't find anything punk in what I have heard of Zappa. Any shallowness is by people who would lump him in with the punk scene as if anything not the Beach Boys is one style.

@TheFigueroa007 That's not true at all. Listen to Never Mind the Bollocks... Here's the Sex Pistols. Not only is it one of the most well produced albums I've ever heard -- the guitar sound is amazing -- but the lyrics are very politically sound. There are a lot of misconceptions about the band. Their songs were actually somewhat slow compared to the later punk. John Lydon is not a stupid man and I think he was a Zappa fan too.
