Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

I give Hefner all the credit in the world for going on a show like this. Today governments, corporations all cower in fear the moment they're confronted with unflattering information, make excuses to run, avoid answering, etc., rather than stand up and face challenges such as what Hefner subjected himself to here, when he could have easily refused an invitation like this. Regardless beliefs, at least he's got the backbone to look someone in the eye and face them.

I would say that those two women are strong women. Because there standing up for women's right's. They feel they have been treated unfairly and unjust. And I agree on that one. Back when women’s rights activists could form a well educated sentence, and well thought out logical arguments. This is one of the few times in my life as a young man I’ve pondered and given thought to something a women’s activist has said. The sheer education and wit of these gals speaks for them. They don’t have to be loud, or interrupt either. Amazingly done.

Back when men didn't create whole brands and podcasts around the premise of putting down women, women weren't brought into a hostile environment where they were intentionally pushed into a state of defending themselves. Notice that the men aren't ranking over the women either. And Dick Cavett is actually asking questions and mediating the conversation. The women are free to express their opinions calmly as they are not interrupted. And so they don't interrupt the men. The reason there is so much yelling and screaming nowadays is because the environment itself creates tension and noise for entertainment. Because the culture is about "dunking" and not talking.

What a perfect example of a talk show host: He let's his guests bloom. Never tries to hog the spotlight. Here was a very difficult subject to broach with very little time to do it in and he acknowledged the importance of the subject so well by being disappointed (truly not fake like you see so often today) at not being able to explore it further. I think a lot of people were surprised at how intelligent Hef was. Doesn't excuse his morality but certainly he was exceedingly bright.

Reasonable conversations are less likely to happen in areas of conflict, like a college, college town, high LGBT population.
