The fourth official release in the Zappa catalog, We're Only In It For The Money was intended to be a joke. Unfortunately, Zappa observed, not many people got the joke.

I'll be going through the Zappa catalogue in rough order, and having watched a couple of these videos of yours, I now plan to check out the corresponding video along the way, as well. I've already learned a bunch of stuff I didn't know before, and that's the stuff I like. Godspeed!

Good presentation. This album was a major influence on my life. My brother and I had it memorized inside out. Once when out fishing in a small boat with our dad, we started singing the whole album in it’s entirety. Dad was just sitting there at the motor shaking his head and got a bit defensive on bow tie daddy. You had to be there. I still listen to it regularly. I suspect I may have had one of the 40,000. I got it in southern Minnesota in early release.. But we were raised on that version. Several,different versions. I heard an even different mix on a you tube channel just the other night.

Good analysis! Regarding that last segment of Who Needs the Peace Core?, I always think of it like an oath one might take when joining the scouts, the army, or even the Peace Corps “I will love everyone, I will love the cops…I will go to a house where there’s a rock ‘n’ roll band…” It’s as if the “creep” is swearing his oath to an elite society.

The guitar that Jimi Hendrix burnt on stage was gifted to Frank Zappa by Hendrix Himself. Dweezil was looking under the stair case one day and found it. He asked about its origins Frank told him the story and then gave it to him. Dweezil had it restored.
@calvinwazoo
@calvinwazoo 3 жыл бұрын
What's your source? Because all the documentation I've seen indicates the guitar was smashed to bits and only one chunk of it survived, which was used by Fender 50 years later to create a special Jimi Hendrix Fender guitar. Granted, that guitar may have been gifted to Dweezil Zappa, but Frank was dead by the time the guitar was restored with the one piece surviving. Unless Frank got hold of another "piece" of the guitar and had that bit used in the creation of another, different guitar from the one Fender built. If there is some more documented information out there regarding this, please point us in the right direction. That would be super cool to read about.

@@calvinwazoo Ok, maybe you and I are both correct. I remember seeing a clip some where Dweezil found the guitar under the staircase it had been sitting there for years, Frank forgot it was there. Dweezil asked Frank about it. Frank told him it's origins, Frank gifted it to him and he did a restoration. It was quite a while back. I don't dispute your statement. You sound as if you are aware of the guitar. However I do know I didn't make the story up. I will look for the story and get you a copy.

@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 I've heard a similar story, but I'm wondering if the guitar was from the time when the Mothers were in NYC and frequently played at the Garrick (?). There's a story about Hendrix dropping in for a show and Zappa let him come on stage to play and Zappa actually stepped off the stage and went into the audience to watch and listen. I think Zappa did obtain one of Hendrix's guitars, and I also recall a video during which Dweezil shows it (similar background story as well). At Monterey Hendrix had two guitars, the Fender he generally played at all shows, and a second guitar he brought out for Wild Thing and which was the guitar he destroyed. The other guitar from that show was sold at auction several years ago to someone in Britain.

My first copy of this LP, back then, was the original Verve recording, on 8-Track tape. Not only was the sound more "dramatic" than the later Ryko remastering, but the song sequence was different than the LP (due to the track configuration of the 8-track format). I'd give $$$$ to hear it again, perhaps forever lost. Nevertheless, at least the last "song" remained, "Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny", as it should. Only "Dwarf Nebula Processional March" (from "Weasels...") matches it. I wished Zappa did more electronic stuff, and less synclavier, imho.

We thank you too, man, for the very good and profound analysis and information you delivered. Tnis is one of the best albums in the world music history. As a non-American, I am intrigued by the explanation of the situation at that time in USA. Of course, after listening to this album so many times, I have developed a notion of what was going on and what all this was about (though not in such detail), but something new for me that I laugthed a lot at was your explanation of the meaning of The Chrome-Plated Megaphone Of Destiny... Cheers and enjoy Zappa!

The quote is widely attributed to Frank Zappa, but I cannot find the original source from when the quote first appeared. And the quote appears to be suspicious because of the way Frank's autobiography begins - the tone of the beginning seems to indicate he was not a book reader. He was, however, an avid news media consumer.

Ah so that was a real harpsichord. Always wondered that or if it was just a prepared guitar of some kind. Remixes and remasters (these days mastering is largely done with the push of a single button in one or two programs with zero thought) tend to be worse from what I can tell

Both Verve and Zappa censored the album in very peculiar ways. Buying an "OG" is a difficult task because there are so many variants out there, which is why I don't have an OG at the moment. But I agree it's a brilliant album. Thanks for watching :)

@@calvinwazoo Hey, so I subscribed to your channel -- am listening to your breakdown of Just Another Band From L.A. right now, always found it interesting how Zappa began to 'mature' from 1971 in to the sound we'd get with Roxy & Elswhere a few years later. I think that was the first time John Lennon fucked with Zappa-adjacent people too (The Turtles, I think? One of the band members quit because of Lennon being a massive douche to them)
