Zappa is on another level. His repertoire of songs from early 70s all the way is standing by itself. One of it’s kind. Cannot be imitated. Though he changed music style several times. Also his work with Mother of Invention from mid 60.s to mid 70.s groundbreaking with stellar musicians. Apart from all jazz which he is master on, listen also to the albums Apostrophe, Joe’s Garage or Sheik Yerbouti from the 70.s and just immerse in fun songs and chords of all kind.

This song is from my favorite album side of all time... starts with "Deathless Horsie" then to "Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar Some More" before "Pink Napkins"... Pink Napkins descends from his signature song "Black Napkins" which is more uptempo and a distorted guitar, hence the name "Pink Napkins"... This is a deep dark rabbit hole Jayvee... I would be glad to fly down into that hole with "Hot Rats" next... Deep guitar playing on another level...

As a lifelong Zappa fan it's really great to see so many folks getting exposed to this genius on your channel by hearing his guitar playing first! Zappa was a composer and a guitarist and is mostly known for his jokier, vocal material but he recorded over 60+ albums in his lifetime that spanned the musical spectrum and I encourage everyone to dig around because there is a little something for everyone (rock, jazz, doowop, classical, R&B, country, reggae)

I hope I can tell my Zappa story one day. As yet, I don’t have permission from the family member it involves. But I can say that my mom, sister and I spent most of a day with him once, when I was 13, because of his relationship with this other family member... It was not all pleasant, although he was nice enough to give me his earplugs for his concert. I only saw about half of the concert because I was sitting in the front row with my grandmother, and I was mortified when he mooned the audience. 😂 I had fun hanging out with his bodyguard John Smothers. That dude was hilarious! One day I’ll tell the rest, I hope!

His instrumentals are great as the musicians he played with were always first class. Check out something like Peaches En Regalia for more instrumental goodness.

Zappa is awesome. His lyrics are often way out there, he once said the only reason he writes lyrics is to make the music appeal to more people. He was all about the music. Some good ones by him are Montana and Zomby Woof, both have awesome guitar solos. A more mainstream pick would be Joe's Garage.
@RichieG4 жыл бұрын
I would consider myself an expert on all things Zappa. I know him I knew the band and I know all whole catalog. There are hundreds of albums especially if you count the bootlegs and in all of that material there are plenty of golden nuggets, and there's for some reason some lumps of s*** - novelty songs - a lot of people love. I don't get it. But I'd rather show you the musical side of Frank zappa. go to the album Waka-Jawaka and play the song of the same name you will not be disappointed! I'll have to get you some video of some of the better performances. There was so much Superior material than people are going to suggest you play it's unnatural.

You speak the truth. I saw Zappa at least a dozen times, best musicians and musicianship, best concerts (and the single worst concert because of the audience) I ever experienced. His "popular" music often parodied the times. Zappa is a deep hole to fall into. The Black Page G Spot tornado There are so many gems.
@dougoneill72664 жыл бұрын
There is room for all sides of Zappa. the goofy, the satirical and the sublime. sometimes all in the same piece Personally I'm equally happy with The Black Page, Dumb all over or Dangerous Kitchen or all points in between. It kind of saddens me that a lot of people consider his more accessible music and tracks as somehow inferior. it's all Zappa and it's all worth a listen. elitism where Zappa is concerned should be left in the 90s where it belongs and all of his music considered and enjoyed.
@WMalven4 жыл бұрын
I don't consider myself a Zappa expert, but I agree...mostly...I get a kick out of the novelty/satire songs and the orchestration in some, like "St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast" and "Father O'Blivion," is amazing, but definitely his real genius was his jazz inspired stuff like "Waka Jawaka" and this song.

Some addt'l notes: With 113 Studio albums and 13 Compilation albums (and counting), the catalog is a rich goldmine. The genres range all over the place, including Doo-wop, symphonic, all manner of jazz and Rock (of course), and many experimental albums. With such a huge variety there's pure gold and also plenty of flotsam sprinkled around. I'd list "1st listens" as: * Waka-Jawaka from the album of the same name. * For a fantastic bass solo listen to Jack Bruce on "Apostrophe" from the album of the same name. Out of this world. * The album Zoot Allures for an album listen. * More jazz? The Grand Wazoo. From The Grand Wazoo start with The Grand Wazoo or Blessed Relief, Eat that question. A great starting point also is the album Läther. *See a detailed write-up on www.h2g2.com/entry/A4166624*. When FZ was trying to end his relationship with Warner Records he gave them the required 3 albums to be released, then went on the radio and told ppl to fire up their recording equipment and then played Läther, which was all 3 albums that Warner now had to sell to an audience that already had it all! If there's a song you're considering for the channel run it by me 1st and I'll tell you what to expect. Some songs are just not worthy of your channel time. I know every album and most songs, I'd love to help with questions on a "1st reactions" list. Then there's all the musicians, all the sidemen, that played with FZ... That forms a family tree of other top-notch bands. This goes very deep what with prolific output from the 60s to even today with gems from the vault. More questions? I'm here for you buddy. Not so much for the channel but for you: From the "You can't do that on stage anymore" series start with volume 2, The Helsinki Concert. Buffalo is a great album. I could go on... Peace

Rock music is generally characterized with a back beat of snare drum on 2 and 4 of the beat... This qualifies... also, Frank generally doesn't use jazz scales or melodies for his solos, albeit there are some similarities to the jazz format...

Fusion. As far as I know, fusion was invented or started by Miles Davis in the mid 60s. He was coming from the jazz arena and brought rock into his sound with musicians in his group like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. That sound was a bit more jazz than rock but combined both genres. Here Zappa is putting out fusion music but I'd say there's a bit more rock than jazz based on what I hear from this song which appears to have come out on the album, Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar, from 1981. I own lots of Zappa albums from the 60s and 70s but not much after that so I need to buy this album/cd.

I don't know if Zappa ever had a top ten hit. But he was a genius, even beyond music. I listened to the multiple Joe's Garage album endlessly -- a snarky, operatic cycle of a prototypical rocker's journey through fame, with characteristic Zappa humor. This is Zappa speaking out for music and artistic freedom, addressing the conservative congress (chiefly then head of the Senate, VP George HW Bush, and then senator Al Gore, as their wives had taken up and championed the cause) that wanted to clamp down on the "immorality" of rock and roll music, 35 years ago this month: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DhgAF8Vu8G0w&ved=2ahUKEwixzcfs49PrAhVxFzQIHR78DEsQjjgwAHoECAUQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1i8tG6obOk6atPdO3CrMWS
