After about 40 years of listening to Zappa (ugh I'm old now) I'm still amazed at Frank's ability to mix a ridiculous silly comical idea and amazing expert level music writing and musicianship and have them work so well together. His bands are always so incredibly tight yet still feel loose so it's not robotic sounding. I'm not that great at describing it but Frank's bands were always great at doing it.

Amazing showcase for the great Terry Bozzio. Terry is still around. He plays with different ensembles and does drum clinics everywhere. His drum set now a days is so huge - it's out of control. Though some might find this piece offensive it actually has a lot of powerful, beautiful musical moments. Note they play the melody to old 30's classic "Isn't It Romantic" at 2:55. Funny. Of course Zappa ends the song on my favorite chord D/C but that's besides the point. I saw this concert when FZ debuted his movie "Baby Snakes" back in 1979 at the Beacon Theater. In that big screened, loud volume setting, the audience was left speechless. Ha! I knew you folks would see it at one point.

You guys have officially made it, this song could only be fully appreciated by a true FZ fan, newbies would have trouble handling it. The Muffin Man, City of Tiny Lites, and this were from the same set of shows, all at the Palladium around Halloween 77. (the movie made from those shows by Frank is Baby Snakes, as many have mentioned). If you want to see Terry more recently, there are Dweezil ZPZ vids out there featuring him from early 2000s. If you haven't taken the time to watch the round table of Zappa drummers (Ralph, Chester, Terry, and Chad) along with Ruth discussing their days in his band, I have attached the link below. Incredible stories! And thanks to Wayne for picking the version with the full intro and the improved audio, there are subpar versions of the same vid out there.

Peter the musical genius says, ""You guys have officially made it, this song could only be fully appreciated by a true FZ fan, newbies would have trouble handling it""? WHY?? Its actually your genius organic era,you and your two buddies love, newbies would have trouble handling. You have a totally demented view. You ,along with R. and his lover, Vinny ""SLOPPY POLYRHYTHMIC"",Coliauta, and Zolar, the one who looks for typo eras to attack, absolutely made no sense AGAIN with that assessment. Newbies would stick their fingers in their EARS with most of roxy era. Bozzio is the era that grabs EVERY type of music listener, except the neglected boys, like you guys, who didnt get a musical education from their parents but cover it up by acting like they know Zappa's music.

Good choice. When the 'Zappa in New York' album came out in 1977 it included Punky's Whips - well for a day or so until Angel's record company threatened a lawsuit, at which Warner Brothers, Frank's label at the time, pulled the album from the shops and re-released it without Punky's Whips. For collectors, and I include myself, you can find (or bought at the time, as I did) copies with Punky's, without Punky's, and a few with Punky's on the LP sleeve but not on the record. Of course Punky Meadows, lead singer of Angel, whom the song is all about, was delighted by the song - being satirized by FZ surely, for a young metal singer, meant he had made it! And then the track was pulled. I'd love to say that my dog Bozzio came in and watched the video with me, but he's seen it all before......

I have to honour you two! This song took me years to get my head around and you seem to have caught the essence on the first listening. It is one of those Zappa pieces (just like the whole of the Joe's Garage album), that you can listen to for years and suddenly hear something (in the drums, the vocals, the lyrics, the bass, the guitar etc etc etc etc etc etc...) and the lights will come on in your head and you will think - I have never noticed that before. Said it before - " the guy was a frickin' genius!"

"Punky's Whips" first appeared on the original 1977 version of "Zappa in New York". A very small handful of stores received copies before Warner Brothers pulled it. One was a variety shop (electronics, jewelry, records, etc) in downtown Tucson whose record section was a cornucopia of hard to find items (VU banana cover, Heart's original "Magazine" just to name two). They had about six copies, but I didn't have enough cash, and nobody my age had plastic back then. When I came back a few days later they told me they had sold their last one that morning, but they could call me when the next shipment came. Well, that was six months later with the "official" release, which omitted "Punky's Whips", and cut almost a minute out of "Titties and Beer", both of which were in violation of Zappa's contract with WB. Original copies rarely come on the market, and when they do the price is astronomical. That shop will be one of my first stops when I get my time machine.

Terry is alive and well and composes and plays all over the world. He lives in Japan these days. I saw him last at City Winery in Manhattan in like 2018. Sure it was fifty drummers and their one kid who wants to play drums too, and this bass player, but hey, for me it is the Zappa history. He has a tremendous kit that takes HOURS to set up. Chromatically tuned and everything. Makes Neil Peart look like Buddy Rich. Check him out on the Dweezil Zappa "Zappa Plays Zappa " DVD tour from 2006. You will not be disappointed.

The movie is called Baby Snakes, out in 1979 in the theaters (I remember watching the movie trailer on TV) and the show is from the Halloween in New York series at The Palladium in 1977. The album related to this movie is called Sheik Yerbouti, also out in 1979, however the live portions of the music are taken from The London Hammersmith Odeon in 1978. A lot of the music played on the movie Baby Snakes, specifically Punky's Whips, The Purple Lagoon and The Illinois Enema Bandit to name a few, have their original release on the also live album, Zappa In New York which is also taken from the Halloween At New York series of shows, also at The Palladium, this one from 1976. I think Frank made it a point to play the Halloween week in New York every year from 1976 till 1984.

This was supposed to be released on "Live In New York" album, but apparently Warner Bros were worried about being sued, so withdrew the album (in the UK anyway!). They took this track off and some other references to Punky, then released it again. A few copies did get out to market and are highly sort after now. Frank did later release the album as intended. You need to look up that Punky Meadows publicity shot on the net! 😂😂

great choice patreon. So much energy skill and fun. Frank liked to write songs for certain individuals to "showcase" them and to be forever remembered. Think this is the case for this one with Terry

This is a great piece of entertainment. It wasn't on the original vinyl double LP "Live in New York", but I was very happy when he decided to include it on the CD. Also, you reacted to Titties 'n' Beer from the same album. Terry played the devil, then. He is still considered one of the best drummers ever

Yup, Bozzio still out there with his 64 piece drumkit (did sound for him twice during his clinics: 7 bass drum mics and 4 overheads) Here's footage from 13 years ago of him playing The Black Page with Dweezil Zappa's tribute band: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3W0dmtoetGsgMk

Terry is the sweetest guy. When we did Thing-Fish the first time in 2001, we met him and he said to our drummer: "Wow, I don't want your job." He still didn't know what the f Thing-Fish was really about. But then, who does. Even Gail was vague about it.

Actually, I would recommend reacting to the whole album, but it's a real ordeal. Even hardcore Zappa fans are deeply divided about this. Anyway, here is what we made of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX3NeYyggdaSqK8

The end part of this song is some of the best music ever. Bozzio should hook up with the remaining members of Rush, that would really be nice!!! Bozzio is probably one of the only drummers out of a very few alive that could handle the drumming. Love this crew though, they rock!!!
