This came out in October, 1969. No one else was making music like this, and that trend continued throughout his career.

I heard it on release and it was astonishing at that time. Still is.

One of the greatest albums of all time, all around. The Gumbo Variations is genius, gives me goosebumps every time I play it.

A quick zappa story...when I was 16 I had slipped into the orchestra pit below the band,things were going well, and then security began to to ruff me up for being there...well that didn't go ever very well with frank, he stopped the song and told security leave me fuck alone, that I had the best seat in the house and I could stay there! Thanks frank...RIP...

The concentration required to play extended jams always amaze me. The interplay between guitar and drums was spot on. Just when you thought things would fall apart they pulled it back together again! Love your reactions!
@ceddyharris6340 Жыл бұрын
I don't disagree, but I will add that this version of the song is highly edited, the original jam is even longer.

Yep no other vocals on the album but some of Frank's finest work, in those instrumental tracks

A great album, mesmeric and jazzy with quite an original sound.

Good ear - yes it's Captain Beefheart singing, the guitar solo is Zappa. I believe the rest of the songs on that album are instrumentals.

Yep - that's Captain Beefheart. You can't mistake that voice. He had alot of really weird sh**. I can't say I've heard much from him I like, but there is an awesome live performance for a TV show I can't get outta my brain. Check out the KZbin video "Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band (Live on Beat Club 1972)." It's a collection of 3 or 4 of his songs including "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby". I like it. It's weird but good weird.

The spinning coin is a great picture for a theme getting deconstructed into an orgasmic frenzy and coming right back to the point. You can hear a lot of this in FZ tunes. Try 'Yo Mama' for an example.

Max Bennett was the drummer (I had to double check) who was presumably just a session drummer for the session (not a regular band member) and there were other drummers on the record
@pigdogindy Жыл бұрын
It is John Guerin on drums. Max Bennet plays bass. Both are incredible musicians.

You can well continue through the whole album! A lot of jazz fusion and brass. Also after 100ds of times and many years it never gets boring. And the real gem is "Peaches..." - there are a couple of versions on later albums. Zappa used it a lot as the last song on concerts.

Hey from Ned in Spain ! Great choice Rory and thanks for boosting the massive interplay between the instruments on this. I'm a huge Zappa fan but had to look up who the drummer was. Turns our it was John Guerin who was one of the early jazz rock players and is also rippin the skins on the original theme to Hawaii Five O !! Beefheart is definitely the voice on this. Mothers drummer Jimmy Carl Black once said that he thought CB was the best front man Frank ever had, there were better or more versatile singers but the Captain was a whole something or other else.

Jimmy Carl Black was the Indian of the group.

Yes that’s Captain Beefheart when he says when he mentions the Lida hotel in Los Angeles when is album fist came out Me and my teenage buddies headed down to Los Angeles about a 45 minute drive away and explored the Lida hotel Did follow a female dressed in what would be called “a woman of the night “ Up to a room, followed her that is, unknown to her. Youth as we was Simply chuckled - we had no money, or the bravery to stick around anymore… An adventure for us at least Later John Thomas our high school buddy got to play with the captain Beefheart band as a keyboardist Don Vanvleet Was an unusual man A genius of sorts Couldn’t read a note of music Just like ENO Don just had an incredibly natural ear for music What a genius Just like mr Zappa

I do believe Zappa and Beefheart were in the same class in high school and collaborated in music quite a bit before Beefheart quit the business. You need to react to the Captain and do him justice.

Great! Rory. So good to see you enjoying so much Classic Rock. It should be enjoyed by many because there was definitely a lot of really great music made. As for the song. Another one of The Best from FZ

John Guerin on drums. Don 'Sugarcane' Harris on violin. Sugarcane died from drugs. He was then replaced by Jean Luc Ponty who also plays on this album. A year later Jimi Hendrix died. Oh then there was Janice Jalopy. It's no wonder Frank always had a distaste for drugs and people who used them.

He said he toked ten joints in his whole life and said it gave him a headache and he didn't like it. Well, he probably got some ragweed. He'd like my 30 percent white willow / chocolate Lopez hybrid Im sure.
