In this episode of Quite Frankly I'm showing you how to work with the iPad pro and the Apple Pencil to retouch straight into Photoshop via the app Astropad, a pretty cool combination I must say.

Adobe needs to just make full Photoshop for iPad Pro. We shouldn't have to tether it to another computer and monitor just to do retouching. The iPad Pro is powerful enough.

Great video! I really loved that you showed your monitor and I pad pro at the same time. I was wondering if you have tried using the Wacom intous stylus? I'm not the biggest fan of the Apple pencil design. I would highly appreciate your response. Thank you
@FrankDoorhof9 жыл бұрын
Did you work with the pencil ? The Wacom intous doesn't work unless you use a stylus designed for the iPad and those have much less resolution than the pencil.
@chrisanders88489 жыл бұрын
+Frank Doorhof only a bit, just didn't like the feeling of the pencil and design. But the Wacom intuos creative stylus 2 works with astropad. So I was wondering if you had any comparisons between the apple pen and the Wacom stylus on the app.

+Just Anders I bought it when I got the iPad pro with Pencil so didn't feel the need to test the Wacom, I personally love the feel of the pencil, compared to my Wacom 5 which I use(d) on my Mac.

I actually think the iPad Pro will change the way visual artists work in a way that the Surface Pro won't. If you're drawing, editing, retouching no lag time is critical to working efficiently. Every other tablet I've ever worked with, including all iPads have pretty atrocious lag time. I would love to know what it would take for Apple to produce more accurate colors. If they can nail the colors, this tablet is a massive game changer.
@FrankDoorhof9 жыл бұрын
Colors in procreate are very good. In astropad it seems a bit desaturated
@jeanbaptistelabelle9 жыл бұрын
+trevorpinnocky How is this tablet a game changer compared to 3 years of Surface Pro line ???
@trevorpinnocky9 жыл бұрын
the pencil, the battery life, and the unparalleled and highly curated app store
@FrankDoorhof9 жыл бұрын
+trevorpinnocky don't forget the lag in the surface with the pen and no lag on the IPP. The surface pen is more aimed at taking notes etc and can be used for drawing (I've seen amazing art) the pencil is aimed at drawing. When you once experienced it you can judge. The way the pencils look in procreate and the shading works is bordering to magic
@jeanbaptistelabelle9 жыл бұрын
+trevorpinnocky So what is new again ? The pen ? Do you know that the Surface has a pen since 3 years ? Do you know that the 1st generation has a wacom digitizer ? Are you telling us that Wacom is not good ? The battery life is nice but I would like to see how it is a factor when ... the iPad is plugged like on the video !?! At last, are you really implying that you have more applications on the iPad that on all programs on Windows ? I think you have think reversed. Actually, this is still the BIG drawback of the iPas Pro so far... Bottom line : nothing. Apple users, like usual, discover life ... 3 years after all the others.

Great review on Astropad Frank. I just came across your channel, because your video was recommended to me! I have tested Astropad for a little and I was really impressed with it. Astropad is working on crowdfunded Luna display: real 16ms extended screen. And Adobe seems to be working on full Photshop for iOS version. Hope they hurry up, because what's keeping me from a Surface book 2 and/or from Affinity software? Apparently the message finally kicked in, only after Surface kept on growing (being able to run full version CC software) and other contenders hit the market with ever growing marketshares (Luminar, Affinity, Procreate, Graphic,...).

hi, regarding the colour - is your monitor a wide gamut one? I'd imagine apple have a very accurate display for srgb but Astropad could run into difficulties with the colours if your monitor is anything other than srgb as it is simply copying what's on the screen and ios is unaware there's another screen involved, so can't load a colour profile for it. Colour accuracy is a problem in tablets still with no os wide colour profiling and very few app makers interested in x-rites colortrue software :(

Thanks for this great video! I like the points you make. I've been a professional for many years and I use an iMac, a second screen, Wacom tablet and the usual software. I love to draw on a big 24" display with my hand and stylus out of the way, resting on a horizontal tablet. I don't need a big Cintiq. But to travel and sketch on the go I use an old iPad. I make sketches which I can later transfer and finish or use as reference on the desktop. However the iPad is quite limited. Many times I have wished it had a bigger screen and pressure sensitivity! And I'm sure I'm not alone. I don't need a Cintiq Companion, and much less a MS Surface, but the iPad Pro is now at the top of my list of "must have".

***** I guess I've been lucky. At every job I've had as a graphic artist and/or designer the company used Macs, and I've never had a significant problem with them. But I'm not what people may call a "fanboy". I've used PC and Windows too, and If people had a bad experience with Apple products it makes perfect sense that they would prefer a MS Surface or Cintiq Companion. I'm not gonna argue for one or he other, just going to share what works for me. Cheers!

Fabulous video thankyou Frank. For me and a lot of graphics professionals this answers the whole for/against argument on getting an iPadPro. I don't think many of us really need a massive iPad (or many folks really intend to replace their laptop with it). For me it's almost ridiculously too big for a tablet. BUT as a cintiq-level (or better) performance device for retouching, drawing etc in desktop apps this now looks awesome. And you get a killer tablet 'thrown in' as a bonus. Now that's turned my opinion around. I only just heard about astropad recently, but this must be THE killer app for the iPadPro/pencil. Quite literally this video has turned me from "not bothered", to reaching for my wallet!

+Frank Doorhof Thank you for answering my question. I was planning to get a Wacom Intuos Pro but after watching your video, I'm swayed towards getting an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil with Astropad. I do most of my photo post processing on Lightroom. Just want to make sure I make the right decision :-)
@FrankDoorhof8 жыл бұрын
Well.... There is one thing, and I'll be doing a follow up on that. The thing REALLY missing from astropad is the hovering option, meaning you see the pointer BEFORE you hit the tablet. Now don't get me wrong, I've done MANY sessions with Astropad and I love it, but when you clone a lot it's a frustrating affair, in skin it's ok, but as soon as I need some more accuracy it's a disaster, you have to guess where it hits, so extending a line for example is next to impossible, while with a Wacom you can see the hovering clone before you hit the surface which is a piece of cake. So for normal retouching and removing dust from the sky etc. it works awesome and I absolutely love it. But also as mentioned in the video, I would use it if I already HAD an iPad, and it's an ADDITION to the ALREADY in use iPad pro. Wacom also has a 13"HD Cintiq which I would advise over Astropad on the iPad pro, the problem of course is that you can't play a game on it, can't watch a movie, can't draw without it being connected to a Pc/Mac etc. Astropad rocks if you already own an iPad and you want to retouch some images, and in some workflows it will handle 99.9% of the chores, in mine it goes a LONG way, unless I have to dive in for cloning. Without a doubt get it if you already own an iPad, don't if you plan on using it SOLEY for retouching, you're better off with the cintiq 13HD

I tried Astro pad with my iPad air and I find that when I make a selection to extract the background it's very pixelated to the point of being unusable. Looking at the Astropad forums they don't have a answer for this. Have you experienced this? Or have a work around?

Am I doing something wrong on my copy of Astropad? I bought it, and it's horrible. I connect to my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro via USB cable, and the output to my iPad is pixelated and laggy. It definitely doesn't look like what you have here.

I never liked the apple monitors so I always used different ones, at the moment the BenQ AdobeRGB versions, great ,monitors and they work on both Mac and PC. I also work mostly on Mac but recently added the Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 16 to our line up.

Some comments here, I swear... It's like people don't even watch the video, they just see "Apple" in the title of the video and click it to write stupid stuff about how much better XX is. No, it isn't, it's an opinion based on your budget and needs; if you prefer Surface Pro or Cintiq, great, go and get it instead.

Really, really wish they made a stylus for my air 2. I'm probably going to get the second version of the ipad pro. My workload is light, word for writing, procreate and Ps touch for book cover illustrations, and the air 2 could do nearly 100% of everything i need (w a keyboard) except actually put together my ebooks on Amazon's website (although this might have been remedied in ios 9, looks like 'browse files' buttons are letting me pull from my onedrive account). I've only gone fully mobile recently, and I know that your workload needs you to hit up a real rig, obviously, but it is refreshing for light workload peeps like myself. I agree with you 100, there's a lot to be said for being able to grab something light to do some work on your bed, couch, coffee shop, wherever, with ease. Also, nice vids, subbed

At that time the 12.9. There was no other on the market. At the moment I'm not using Apple at all after many years.
@neilwright32626 жыл бұрын
Frank Doorhof Ok..... Do you think the 10.5 iPad Pro is good for retouching ?
@FrankDoorhof6 жыл бұрын
No. If your workflow depends on high quality output like tiff Adobe rgb 16 bits and you are in an adobe workflow .... No If you do do quick adjustments software like astropad will help a lot but I still prefer to just attach a Wacom when I need selections. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome solution but with selections the version I tested was useless.
@neilwright32626 жыл бұрын
Frank Doorhof Thanks for the advice. I use the Wacom all the time. As I am about to purchase the iPad Pro 10.5 to retouch on astropad.

Why would you use iPad pro instead of a Cintiq? Colour accuracy is far superior on a Wacom if nothing else.
@FrankDoorhof9 жыл бұрын
Because I use it for much more than just retouching. It's just one small part. And a cintiq is a lot more expensive.
@jameswilkinson1509 жыл бұрын
+Frank Doorhof I use my Cintiq for much more than retouching too. Also it isn't much more expensive than the iPad pro, especially once you've added the cost of the pen

I own a 13" Cintiq HD and it's going on eBay. I got my iPad Pro on release day, but I'm still waiting on that pesky pencil! Why Apple? Delivery says the 19th but it still hasn't slipped past "processing" to "preparing for shipment". I found Astropad a few days before watching this video, and I was kinda waiting for the Pencil to show up before testing it so I could have a new, unbiased experience with it. I am glad I watched your video however, because it makes me feel better about buying yet another expensive iPad/Accessories combo and gives me faith I can do away with my Cintiq. I completely agree with you though, Cintiq's are clunky and Wacom has a corner on the market which has allowed their practices to not be the best at times. I've been waiting for Apple to produce a "graphics tablet" for many many years now, and this is as good as it's gonna get. Keep in mind that Apple was the first to produce a graphics tablet for home computing! The Apple Utopia Graphics Tablet System for the Apple II!! Most folks don't know that (or are two young to even know what an Apple II is)! Great video! Thanks!

+Frank Doorhof So I picked up a Pencil at my local Best Buy yesterday! Surprise! They actually had them in stock after pestering every Apple store for the past few days... I must say I agree with everything you have to say. I'm putting the Cintiq 13HD on eBay tomorrow. The Pencil works flawlessly and with Astropad it's an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. I've owned a ton of iPad Styluses (Styli?) and Apple used some sort of Voodoo magic for the palm rejection/tilt/pressure sensitivity. It works as you would expect an Apple product to work, considering that sometimes with first gen products Apple fails to work out some minor bugs, but not here -- I'm ecstatic to see what Apple does with this new tool. There are some points where the Cintiq will always trump with extremely detailed work, but for what I do (mostly product ideation and design sketching/concepts) it's a home run. It feels like the Cintiq in the way of the stylus pixel resolution. You can sense how capable the iPad Pro's newly upgraded digitizer is and how it compliments the Pencil. I use Sketchbook Pro for product rendering and the integration between Mac and iPad apps are amazing and when I do want to use Photoshop/Illustrator, Astropad is right there. Astropad is a whole other review tho, I mean what a genius app! It works VERY well with the new iPad/Pencil and Astropad is promising more iPad Pro capability in the near future. I tested both the WiFi and Lightening connections and with both I was working at full throughput. It is important to note that I am connected through a very fast AC 5Ghz connection. Some minor screen building on the iPad with major screen changes, but nothing that affects the drawing/pressure sensitivity outcome. I prefer the hardwire connection when I'm at my desk because it keeps the iPad charged at the same time. The iPad Pro's battery is fantastic so sketching in bed while hanging out with wifey or at a coffee shop without having to carry a mobile drafting table worth of art supplies is now a possibility. No longer am I tied to my workstation! The only other portable professional graphics tablet out there is the Cintiq Companion and then you're forced to work on a Win platform when not connected to your Mac. Not to mention that it's much more expensive. Overall I'm very impressed and can't thank you enough for your intelligently compiled video with detailed information. I'm now subbed to your channel!
