I saw him perform this in concert before the album was even recorded in Fall of 1972! It was three times longer than it is here! It was the first time I ever heard a synthesizer at a concert, and I lived for those early synths sounds ever since.

Great choice guys, Edgar's The Man! The 70s is such a goldmine of genius in such a massive quantity, it's so rare to find that in music today. Who'd have thought watching people you've never met rocking out to tunes you love would be so much fun and addictive? It just is! But after all these tracks I feel like I know you guys now. You know how like when you go to concert you know everyone is there for the same reason. This is a bit like that. If you catch the eye of anyone else there you don't need to say anything you just know they get it.

@@fatherandsonreactions I don't think you'll be disappointed if it is the BBC version - that's the one I know and I assume that's the one people are talking about. It's at least double the length and has a very interesting drum and keyboard duet in the middle of it! If you do like this jazz/fusion music,you've said you like Yes and Rush, you should check out some King Crimson.Robert Fripp is the guitarist and it's his band. That said they have done a lot over the years and to be polite they can be very challenging at times(!) but "21st Century Schizoid Man live from 2015" is great. There are lots of weird time signatures and changes so you should like it.Plus the band has 3 drummers!😀

@@fatherandsonreactions Sadly that doesn't surprise me about them blocking stuff. Check out Colosseum if you get time. A British band founded in the late 60s and had various members including Gary Moore and Don Airey at various times.Their masterpiece 'The Valentyne Suite' from 1969 is a 17 minute instrumental with a great opening with a quiet few minutes in the middle before building up to great manic guitar work and drum ending...but before Pink Floyd did it with 'Echoes'! 😀 My final comment of the day honest!

This, by the way, is yet another example of a song that no one, not even the band themselves, ever expected to be a hit. :-) "Frankenstein" was originally just a free-form jam session Edgar Winter and his band did during their live shows, and sometimes in the studio as a sort of warm-up exercise before recording. They threw this studio version together out of several separate takes (hence the name, since it was a bunch of different parts spliced together), and a shortened version of it was issued as the "B"-side to the single they *thought* would be the hit from the album, a song called "Hangin' Around"... ...well, "Hangin' Around" got almost no airplay, but after a few DJs at some of the more free-form AOR (album-oriented rock) stations gave the B-side a spin or two and got inundated with calls from listeners wanting to know what that crazy psychedelic track was, the word got around, some of the bigger AM rock stations added it to their playlists, and the thing just took off. Edgar Winter and his bandmates were as surprised as anyone when the thing shot all the way up to #1 on the charts!

Never heard of this group, but I feel like I've heard this song before. Nice, catchy riffs that flow and change over time. Pretty progressive/jazz-style rock here in how it switches tempo and time signatures over the course of the song. Really liked how they added a layer or two here and there as well (ie. that saxophone! Nice!). A nice, explosive ending there, too! An instrumental! Awesome surprise! Yeah, I really enjoyed this track here with how it changed up the music frequently, with great transitions, and on top of that add a couple more layers on top every now and then (again, saxophone!!! Stole the show, imo! Haha). Love when a band introduces classical instruments into their music. Liked some of the synth parts too, even in that quiet moment later in the song (which offered a nice contrast with the other parts of the music that were a bit crazier). Almost reminded me of another (very new) group called Ex Eye, whom I really enjoy. They're an experimental, jazz-metal fusion instrumental group, that also include saxophone into their mixes. I'll have to listen to them, and see if there's any songs I think you both may enjoy. As usual, special suggestions: Solstafir - Otta (studio, or live at A38) (if not the Cynic track. I'm now thinking their track "Humanoid" again. Lol) Have an awesome day, fellas! Thanks for the song reaction! If there's more Edgar Winter in the future, I look forward to it!

Your mind was just blown by the mighty ARP 2600 analog synthesizer. :-) This was the first analog synth that had a keyboard unit which was separate from the sound-generating electronics (which were huge and massive back then, with a rack full of circuit boards), instead of being all in one piece. Edgar Winter figured out, on his own, how to extend the cable connecting the two so that he could attach a shoulder strap to the keyboard unit and wear it like a guitar so that he could move around on stage during the performance -- which was no small feat in itself, considering how finicky the electronics in those old analog synthesizers were (and are); even a couple extra feet of wire could completely throw off the tuning of the circuit if you weren't very careful in how you went about it!
@thatoneguyagain2252
@thatoneguyagain2252 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to see your mind's been blown, just s mine was nearly 50 years ago. "All this in less than five minutes - how do they do this?" Even though "Frankenstein" has so much music crammed into a running time of 4:44, the record company still felt it was necessary to cut it down to 3:28 to release it as a single. The results were abysmal, as these things usually were. Dad, you also know the song "Free Ride", which appeared on the same album as "Frankenstein". It's been used in numerous movies, TV shows and commercials. And, like "Frankenstein", this is another one that you're sure you've never heard of, but about five seconds in you say "I know this, I just never knew the name". Edgar Winter's success came as a side-effect of a tacky joke. One fine day in the offices of Rolling Stone magazine, some of the writers were sitting around smoking a J and discussing musical authenticity vs cultural appropriation. The question was: does a white man have the right to sing the Blues, or is Blues tied so inextricably to the Black American experience that it's wrong for white musicians to even try? (In the 60's the practice was as controversial as white people today using the N word.) One guy pops up with: "I read about this blues guitarist in Texas who's an Albino - you couldn't possibly find a whiter guy than that". Thinking that interviewing this guy might make a humorous article for the magazine, they sent one writer to Houston to check out this Albino Blues player named Johnny Winter. When he got there, he discovered that not only was it not a joke, but that Johnny Winter was one of the best guitarists he'd ever heard. During the interview, Johnny mentioned; "You should really check out my brother Edgar - he can play ten different instruments, and he's an Albino too ! " The writer went back to San Francisco raving about both Winter brothers, and the magazine immediately started promoting Johnny as the next new sensation. This was so effective that Winter had to take time out from recording his third album to play a major gig . . . at Woodstock.

The synth that Edgar Winter used on this tune was an ARP 2600. If you purchased one in the early/mid 70’s, you also got “The ARP 2600 Patch Book”. Sample patch #72 was Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein”. I imagine that everyone tried that one out as soon as they got it home. Watch the live version of this song to see how Winter turned the “keyboard” half of the synth into a keytar, maybe the first.

This is such a mainstay of classic rock radio...great song! Edgar's brother, Johnny, is his twin and he's also a musician...a very good blues rock guy who you should also investigate in your journey of discovery. They did an album together as well in 1976 called "Together'. Dunno if you noticed with the album cover that Edgar is an albino...so is his twin brother (of course, being a twin haha!). I'm glad you listened to the studio version, but there's a great live version out there that will give you a look at the band and how incredible Edgar Winter is. He has a twin brother Johnny, they are albinos, so they spent many hours indoors learning how to play multiple instruments. The group "They Might Be Giants" does a fantastic cover of this song too.
