Carlin is in my Top 5 All-Time. Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Bill Burr, and Bill Hicks. There's still SO MUCH harsh truth in this, but the concept that humans are merely too conceited and arrogant to think we won't single-handedly ruin the entire planet did not age well in this bit. That's my only critique of this. Otherwise, still spot on. We're like Stage 4 Cancer on a BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING host organism called The Earth. It is a scientific fact that if we remain as ignorant as we were when he recorded this set, we've only got somewhere between 50-100 years left before we succeed in destroying the planet. That's fact. So much so that I will feel zero need to debate my point with anyone who replies to this comment. The situation is that dire. Love this channel, love George Carlin, and love the general spirit of this set/bit. Admit it, this did not age perfectly like most of Carlin's material did. If anyone knew he wasn't infallible, nor perfect, it was Carlin too. Remember that. Peace. I'm out.
@thoughtsendprayers97123 жыл бұрын
It is still like George said though, our collective impact is more like a fever that will be a distant memory (along with humanity) by the time the Earth ceases to exist. Past volcanic activity and asteroids have caused long nuclear winters but the earth healed and surface life flourished again.
@chickensandwich88083 жыл бұрын
So I slightly disagree. He's not saying there isn't a problem, nor that something like climate change isn't happening, but rather that it's lasting effects will be short lived in the grand scheme of things. The problem isn't the planet's health, it's the ability for the planet's changing climate, which is our fault, to sustain life that is currently living upon it. He's not denying climate change, he's just trying to correct the perspective of the discussion. Even if we as human beings are responsible for the inevitable death of 99% of the life on the planet in this moment in time, life will still re-emerge from the ashes. To what degree is up for debate, especially considering that the world has maybe a billion years left before it's uninhabitable due to the rising heat and swell of the sun. (Could be less) I would also argue that caring for one another, and addressing climate change are not separate issues. By doing one we will end up doing the other.

I find it funny that some in these comments seem to have missed the point. First off, at no point in the bit did Carlin deny that human beings are responsible for the situation we find ourselves in, he is however making fun of and criticizing token activism and collective hubris. He's correcting the perspective that is often pushed that somehow we are DESTROYING the planet. We are not destroying the planet, we are merely intentionally or not affecting the likelihood of us, and other species to be able to inhabit the planet due to rapid climate change. To be fair, yes, the heating up of the planet is nothing new. It goes through ice ages and interglacial maximums. That last one being when the planet is basically one big jungle. Think the time of the Jurassic period. The thing is these periods are gradual in change due in large part to plate tectonics. Specifically the way in which land mass and it's distribution on the surface of the earth also affect ocean current, and wind streams. The thing is, right now that climate shift is happening in decades instead of millennia due to a massive increase in resources whose bi-products are green house gasses. These gasses trap heat, and make it hard for it to disperse as it normally would given seasonal change, thus causing things like the current cold snap we are seeing due to lower warm air rising and destabilizing the Polar Vortex. Carlin's point wasn't to downplay the idea of humanities impact upon climate within this moment, but to hit on the corporatization of activism. Climate change shouldn't be a partisan issue, and yet it is in part because of how it's been weaponized, fearmongered, and used as a political tool rather than remain an altruistic and scientific endeavor. To be fair, there does need to be a marketing aspect to it as well in order to drive the most base of motivations for some because lets just face it that's part of what humanity is at this given moment. to that and the greater point of this rant. Carlin's message has aged fine, and he is not "redpilling" anyone about a "hoax." He did what he always did, take human arrogance and rub everyone's faces in it rather than let them sit back and rest on percieved good deeds when all society is doing is allowing itself to edge ever closer to oblivion while complaining about everything else but never willing to accept it's own responsibility and self reflect. I would say if anything his point not only still stands but is more relevant now than ever.

Also his bit about ir being irrespective of human existing, is kind of bunk, there is literally no one to quantify if or how much effect we have on species dying out. Considering humans have basically conquered the entire planet and are affecting it much moreso then any other single species ever could, that the chance that any species dying out can still be somewhat linked to our existence and our actions. And the people who want to save animals are obviously not tellign u can save just any, they want to save the ones they know of are actually endangered through our actions.

The Sphinx MIGHT be AT LEAST 11,000 years old. The reason they say this is because of the water erosion on the walls around the Sphinx. You can see pics of it on Google. The reason they came up with 11,000 years is because that was the last time the Sahara got any significant rainfall. Believe it or not, the Sahara used to be lush rainforest with crocodiles and other animals. There was a JRE podcast with either Randall Carlson, Graham Hancock, or Robert Schoch that explains this better than I ever could.
