I always thought Norm was simply emotional as he closed out Letterman because he was realizing all Dave had done for him after he lost his job, kick-started his career, etc. But to know that he had cancer at this time, was likely reflecting on his life and truly, because of his great love for standup and Dave as a friend, now I appreciate even more how legendary this closing standup was. All the best comedians watched that and knew there was no better ambassador for the craft to close out the 25 year run of the Late Show than the great Norm Macdonald. What a king!

When I first saw that Letterman part when Norm said that I messaged everyone I knew and made sure they saw it. I love Norm the comedian but Norm the human blew my mind. I rewatched this after finding out that Norm died today. During that final segment where Norm is holding back his tears... it really got to me. I started crying for a complete stranger who felt like an old friend, a man who felt so familiar to me after all those years I watched his work, every Saturday he was on SNL and beyond. My heart goes out to his family and friends and to us fans, because this is such a loss. Norm made the world a better place, truly, with his gift for making us laugh and making someone feel less alone and depressed, if even for a moment. I still can't believe he's gone. I don't want to believe it. Thanks for all the laughter and good memories, Norm. We will miss you so much. With love, your fans.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I never really knew much about Norm Macdonald until he passed. I'd seen some videos of him interviewing people, but that was pretty much it. Just out of curiosity, I watched a clip of him on Conan the other day. Since then, I've been truly hooked in a way that I've never been with a comedian - watching Norm Macdonald Live, watching his talk show appearances, his stand up. I've been laughing out loud for days, actually laughing out loud. It made me realize how rare that is, to have your day brightened so much by a person you've never met. His jokes have been stuck in my head, and I've been annoyingly showing them to other people who haven't heard them. I know what you mean when you say he feels like a friend. That's a real guy. I cried at the end of this video. The man had a big heart. Rest in peace.

Green - that was beautiful. Not since Robin Williams has the sadness lasted so long. Just different. Davon - it's never too late. I knew of Norm also bc of Conan and Dave. His SNL stint was a little before my time. Through the Quarantine as I started watching more of just comedians to try to cheer myself up I rediscovered Norm, Spade, Sandler, Rock. They are all hilarious. The clip with Norm and Gordon Ramsey on is probably my favorite besides the pig story 😅🤣. ✌

Does anyone else sense that Norm is one of few celebrities to be celebrated before his death? All of the late night compilations existed before he passed. There are so many videos of other comedians discussing Norm’s ability to tell stories and jokes. All of this celebration existed before his passing, and it makes me happy to know we realized how lucky we were even before the end. He’s one of few discussed as a staple in comedy, while still alive. Usually, society deems someone a genius only after they pass away. Idk just seems cool

Honestly I think a lot of people knew at it was kept well under wrap. I don't feel great speculating but I've been binging Norm videos online and I had the same 'sense' that you did (especially on this Joe Rogan episode where he interview Adam Eget). Regardless, people definitely knew something was up but it was never widely mentioned.

I just saw all 5 parts. In the beginning Norm was just a very funny young stand up. Then on the first sit down segment in 1995 you can see how Letterman is starting to really like this guy. On later appearances you can see he is genuinely happy to see him, all the way to the very moving last show. What a great story! Thank you so much, Don Giller!

The Germany joke is one that I shared a thousand times that spoke of the brilliance of Norm. Dave had a nice send off the last few weeks he was on the air and Norm was on one of his last shows. The funniest earliest bit that he ever did was about his friend playing a practical joke on him. That is on his HBO CABLE COMEDY SPECIAL IN 1985 or 1989 OR '91.. I fell off the bannister when I heard that bit. You can youtube it..it was one of those young comedians specials on 46 times a year. LET'ER RIP, NORM.. Watching all 5 parts of these was like watching one of the greatest comedy series of all time, with a simply awesome and relentlessly hysterical character progression through the years, and a beautiful ending. Fiction has nothing on real-life. Thank you for posting these videos. This is one of my favorite things and I will surely watch it time and time again. There was not one single appearance by Norm on this show that didn't leave me busting a gut so hard I could barely breathe. The chemistry between these two was magic. Can't say enough.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester specializes in cancer, the fact that he was going there for such thorough exams back in 2003, shows that he had a very long up and down battle with cancer. Ended in a draw unfortunately.

I have read that Norm actually had 3 bouts with cancer. He had stomach cancer in his late 20s, and someone he knew from Canada said that he was throwing up blood and ended up having 1/2 or more of his stomach removed. I’ve also read that he had multiple myeloma which is a VERY SERIOUS and uncommon cancer of the plasma cells in the bone. It is extremely painful and can cause damage to bones, the immune system, kidneys and red blood cells. It can also cause leukemia, which is a cancer of blood-forming tissue in the bone marrow. This is given as the official cause of Norm’s death, which he had for many years . The poor guy struggled with cancer for most of his life, yet he was determined to find the comedy and absurdity in life and bring laughter and happiness to others. Although this world is so empty without him, not to mention how devastated his loved ones must have been to lose him, I’m happy that he has finally been given a respite from the constant agony he must have been in for years. In the end, I believe Norm came to believe in God and he will be there in the Kingdom to see those of us who also believe in Jesus and will join him at the resurrection. Rest In Peace, Norm. You fought the good fight and earned your eternal reward.🙏🏻💔🥀🕊

Watched all five parts - stayed up as late as I could last night, and then again this morning, just remembering Norm. It was so amazing to watch him grow from such a young man into a seasoned powerhouse of comedy. His tears on his last show with Dave were real... watching this after Norm's passing, knowing that he did this show (and quite a few others) knowing that he was battling cancer is extremely moving. The end of that was particularly difficult to watch as, there is Norm emotionally saying goodbye to his dear friend, David Letterman, whose show will be forever gone, but what we didn't know then, was that Norm had already been fighting cancer for three years at this point.
