11:10 Older bikes had a reverse gear that would seize the rear wheel when you tried to pedal backwards, which would effectively act as a brake, if only for the rear wheel. I used to have one of them in the 80s. Also, Mexican jumping beans had moth larvae inside of them that, when they detected a change in temperature, would try to escape by jumping. It was a form of animal cruelty to have them around and also illegal to trade in them because of international trade restrictions on livestock and the seeds they inhabit, so it's rare to see them smuggled into the US (though I did, again, in the 80s).

Those beans DO exist. I had three in a little jar when I was a very young child. I can't actually remember if I ever witnessed any of them 'jumping' - and knowing my dad they were probably just any old beans and he was fibbing - but they were sold to me as 'Mexican jumping beans'.

I saw several baskets full of Mexican Jumping Beans in Tijuana Mexico in 1994 outside stores full of tourist wares, blankets, ponchos, knock off watches... The Jumping beans are seed pods that have moth larvae in them and when in the sun the grub inside knocks violently causing the pod to jump with a click noise. I'm surprised no one knew about them that Carl asked.

He's forgotten about Halloween, which is at the exact same time of the year and is a celebration of the dead. And as a Scotsman and also Brit, we invented it and it goes back to Pagan times in Scotland and Ireland and the Celtic Brits. It is a celebration of the dead. Lanterns which were made from Turnips in Scotland and became Pumpkins in the states, which are put outside houses to show your ancestors the way home to your house. It's just now Halloween has been taken over by the commercial American version of it and it's only about dressing up etc. It's very much a celebration of the dead in origin and in Scotland now

The beans were imported to Ontario Canada in the 70s. The beans cake in a small clear box. They would jump for a few days.

The jumping beans are actually a thing, tho it's not really a bean. An insect lays it's egg in a nut and when the larvae develops it jumps around. Bought one from a souvenir stand at a place my parents and I visited when I was a kid.

He can no longer open his eyes enough to watch the videos he is meant to react to. Sad really. Stay clear of the edibles my friend. If you can be blind folded using a shoelace, it’s time to cut back.

I had several Mexican jumping beans when I was a kid. You can put them on the table and watch them flip around.

They had Mexican jumping beans when I was a kid. They're a certain kind of bean that gets a worm in it and the worm moves around making the bean move. Usually, kids don't know about the worm, they just see the bean moving around without anyone touching it.
