This was the Christmas no.1 from 1984. The first of 3 different songs with the same title in the UK chart in 1985. The others were by Jennifer Rush (July) and Huey Lewis and the News (August).

It was number one in the UK in early December 84, but didn't quite stay there for Christmas - that accolade went to Band Aid with Do They Know It's Christmas?.
@BardOfAndromeda3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. It probably *would* have been Christmas No. 1 that year but for Band Aid and Wham, both of whom dedicated record sales to the famine in Ethiopia and were at the time the strongest-selling No.1 and No.2 songs in history in the UK. 1984 was a jaw-dropping year for music :)
@grapeman633 жыл бұрын
Jon Cole, you are right. I got my facts a little skewed. By Christmas 1984 this song had dropped to no.6, by the first week of January 1985 it was at no.7. My basic premise however is correct: 1985 saw 3 different songs with the same title in the same year. Interestingly, only 5 songs with this title have ever been top 30 hits in the UK and one of the remaining two (Celine Dion in 1994) was a cover of Jennifer Rush's song.

It might have been my age and the way I interpreted the news but this song seemed to me to call for peace. We were in the final throws of the Cold War and wondering if they would nuke us or if we would nuke them. Reagan was taking about Star Wars. I was like in grade 7 or 8 and this song always seemed to address the internal silent fears that I didn't quite understand but seemed very real.

the duality in this song (concerning good and evil ) and the struggle for acceptance in a biblical world combating (for a lack of better words) the hypocrisy of attained values is....amazing...especially knowing the background of the Holly Johnson...hence the biblical reference in this song actually questions the believe that love can only be obtained by divinity, and so he sings "make love your goal.." and not religion which may dictate it.
