I totally agree with what you're saying about this song because it was about gay sex and it was about that type of person and I remember when I was 23 this came out and I didn't pay any attention much to the idea but when I saw the official video on much music that's what it showed and then I understood it I was quite shocked but I really love the song no matter what it's about

It's hard to imagine now how shocking this song was at the time. It was banned from the BBC and caused outrage. It sparked a whole fashion of Tshirts that said "Frankie says Relax". The original video is probably truer to the spirit of the song. You should check out the follow up Two Tribes and The Power of Love. They were one of the first main stream bands to really push the commercial boundaries of remixes

It's hilarious to realize how clueless some of us (the cis straight in particular) were in the 80's - especially those ladies jumping on stage - as I do not believe anyone in the band swung in the taco direction. But they were a great band, got everyone on their feet in the clubs.

I always wondered if it was staged in some way, because everyone I knew knew they were gay and what the song was about. Maybe it was just liberating all round. I knew it was about gaynstuff but not really that it was about sex so much, I was just a little too young to really understand the significance (I think I was probably 9 when it came out, but it was a prevalent song during my teens...I remember one of the cool older girls at my church youth club had a Frankie Says Relax t-shirt, she undoubtedly knew lol), but I imagine for queer people in their late teens and 20s it was a big deal.

Very controversial at the time of release (1984). It got banned straight away. So it couldn't be played over the radio & definitely not on the TV. But despite that "FGTH" went straight to the top of the charts. Huge, huge hit, in UK 🇬🇧 for sure. Saw lead singer Holly Johnson on a show last month (Christmas), and he sung one of their other big hits "The Power Of Love" live. And let me tell you....... he still got. Perfect performance 👏

I can only speak about in the UK, idk if they reached international audiences given the nature of their songs. But this song was _MASSIVE_ and I'd say that lasted pretty much right through the 80s, it was pretty ground breaking as I recall. The whole band kinda was too, I think, but they were coming in kinda on the heels/slipstream of Queen, so they were flamboyant and...avant garde (I guess you could say), but they were openly gay and unapolgtic about it (it was right there in their music after all). They were like the next evolution from Queen, from my view as an early teen. I don't know what influence Freddie Mercury might have had on them, but I feel like his style and approach kind of opened a path for a band like Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Although the early-mid 80s was quite a mix of these flamboyant kind of bands like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, the rest were generally straight (as far as I know anyway lol). But when it comes to Relax...hell, I don't think I knew a cool teenager who didn't have a white t-shirt that said "Frankie Says Relax" on it, they were everywhere. Holly Johnson, the lead singer has been living with HIV for decades, he found out he had it just a couple weeks before Freddie Mercury died of AIDS. Unlike others, he never really tried to hide he was gay (it was pretty obvious from their music and the imagery, I think..I was barely 10 and I was aware of it) or his HIV diagnosis which, meant he stood out and made him a bit of a target at the time for hate & bigotry. 90s music had a different vibe from the 80s, and I wonder if maybe the space they'd occupied filled in with new and different styles of music...rap, dance music, etc or perhaps his diagnosis made him reevaluate his life, idk but I don't remember anything from them from the 90s* Other big hits for them: Two Tribes, The Power of Love, Welcome to the Pleasuredome. *[A quick check on wiki and it says he went solo in '89, I didn't remember that at all, his 1st solo album did well, but his 2nd flopped & didn't chart at all in 1990, then he was diagnosed in 91 & decided to withdraw from music for a couple years. He wrote a book and did a few one off performances,, but since the mid 90s has worked primarily as a painter with just the occasional dabble in music it seems]

My favourite band growing up in the 80's - this was at number 1 for 5 weeks in the UK, number 10 in the US but reached no 1 in plenty of other countries too. It was followed by Two Tribes which also reached number 1 and then Power of love which did the same. To have three number 1's from their first 3 singles was highly unusual back then. They had two albums but after the second one directional disagreements saw them eventually break. Holly Johnson the lead singer had a brief solo stint but is now a highly regarded painter.

FGTH was one of the influential groups of the 80s, along with Eurythmics and Culture Club. "Relax" was absolutely their biggest hit and very controversial. This is one of the rare "live" video versions, which is much faster paced then the original. Shows Frankie at their best. Thanks for your comments, definitely one of my favorite bands from back in the day.

This song was used in the film Body Double, directed by Brian DePalma. If you Google that, you'll see a very different video, that was placed in the middle of the original film. I think the actors/musicians were supposed to be filming a music video, in a leather bar, which they used as their excuse to put a music video in the middle of a film. It was X-Rated at the time, and caused a lot of controversy in the film. The guy with the argyle sweater, Craig Wasson, was the star of the movie, along with Matthew Modine and Melanie Griffith. Great song but it was an extremely graphic and hard core video in the movie, for the time!
