You're right that French schoolchildren are taught that this is the battle of Poitiers (732 AD). But the locus of the battle is not known exactly, and is thought to be about halfway between Poitiers and Tours. The British schoolchildren are taught that this is the battle of Tours, which is the ancient name French historians originally had given to the battle.

First you see the initial clash of interlocked combatants, only to later pull back to a new set of combants looking as if they're hundreds of yards apart in an entirely new engagement, rather than supporting the original troops. Frankly speaking, nothing would've happened even if the Umayyad force had won because this was not a conquest campaign but a large raid, the Caliphate at this point was far to over stretched to expand anymore even if it wanted to. Also considering that Caliphate was facing many setbacks at this time period, the disastrous Transoxianan campaign which had then earned the Caliphate the full eerie attantion of Chinese Tang dynasty which had now sought to military intervene to protect its interests in Central Asia and let's not forget that the Caliphate had shortly before the battle of Tours fended off a large Khazar force at the Caucasus frontier and the difficulty and the countless setbacks the Caliphate faced in its Indian frontier.
