You obviously didn't get the memos -- Jospehus' mention is universally agreed upon by 99.9% of serious Biblical historians that it is a later interpolation by latter Christians desperate to provide a background for their claims of exactly what you're trying to prove. Tacitus is of similarly worthless significance. Tacitus merely mentions a "Christus", which is NOT "Jesus" by name. This is problematic too because an imperial document from an imperial writer of the day would never allow for the titling of a citizen a "Christos". That word itself is merely the colloquial word at the time for "Anointed One" which was used by Eleusinian Mystery cults ( and borrowed in other "mystic" sects like the Empire) in which an initiate who had been schooled in the gymnasiums at the time has his feet anointed with oil and spices and then was symbolically "buried" in the "womb" of "Mother Earth" for three days --- three being a significant number in pagan cults as the representation of the nuclear family; father, mother, child -- and then they "rose again" after three days to be "reborn" as a "godlike" spiritually or civic leader possessing all of the knowledge gained in the gymnasiums of the time. The Jews of that era were "producing" all kinds of self-proclaimed "Christs" who claimed to be the messiah that the Jews had long been waiting for. (In fact, they got so pissed about waiting for one that they finally revolted themselves in 70 AD, and we know how well that went..) But Tacitus DOES NOT SAY "Jesus Christ" -- he just refers to a random "Christ" whom he said was executed without any spectacular supernatural occurrences - no earthquakes, no dead rising and walking again, no "tearing of the curtain" -- all of these things that you can be sure he would have mentioned if they had happened. But he doesn't. In fact, I would assert that if you place your faith in Tacitus, he actually makes a better case that whoever this "Christus" was, it was NOT the mythical Jesus, or else he would have mentioned the claimed supernatural phenomena that was supposed to have occurred. Furthermore, no other contemporary scholar of the time mentions the alleged "persecution of Christians" under Nero which Tacitus claims, and even Euseibius, whose mentions of Christians is very short indicting sparse source material, does not mention Tacitus' reference, which he surely WOULD have has it been authentic. Tacitus also calls Pilate a "procurator" which he was NOT -- he was a "Prefect", which Tacitus would have known. So the whole document is suspect. NOT reliable proof by any means. Anyway -- I've been studying the myth of Jesus for the last twenty+ years, and if there was actual, reliable proof for the historical Jesus, I would know about it. There is NONE.

And so are you to just "take the word" of any man or woman on something so important to a person like you without doing your own courageous research. Oh what a lazy approach! But here's why Dawkins and everyone else who believes in a historical Jesus is wrong: Jesus was NEVER MEANT to be interpreted literally. THAT point of view became popular only centuries later when ignorant pilgrims started hearing about the story through the printing of the Bible via the Gutenburg Press. But consider this -- who were the first alleged "Christians"? They were Messianic Jews who were waiting for a "messiah" to save them from what they saw a repressive Rome. Messianic Judaism was a violent, disruptive force in the empire, and Rome wanted to be rid of it. THAT was the entire purpose of the invention of Christianity, which occurred in the spiritual vacuum after the destruction of the Temple; to end this meddlesome sect and to blame it for the execution of that long-awaited messiah so that a new, more peaceful "universal" religion (Catholicism) mixed with elements of paganism could be instituted in its place. So the stories of Jesus were directed at a de facto JEWISH audience, to try to draw them away from Judaism. Well Jews NEVER wrote their Scriptures literally -- everything was coded, allegories, metaphors, and with a type of linguistics that most people don't even have any clue about, typology. Add to that "midrash" -- the Jewish practice of recycling old Scriptural references and people into contemporary relevance -- and there's no wonder ordinary people had no clue and misinterpreted it. But Jesus was just a character in an "origin story" designed to explain the origins of this new religion. In truth, it was a common practice back then; Romans regularly absorbed other conquered cultures' gods and religious rituals. Think of it like "Little Red Riding Hood" -- that fictional character was the centerpiece of a story designed to warn children and parents of strangers, basically -- "wolves", probably pedophiles or rapists/highwaymen who ambushed travelers on the forest roadways. So the lesson was transmitted through a parable/fairy tale. But no one believed then, nor now, that LRRH was an actual, literal "person". This is why there's so little actual biographical information on Jesus, and so little contemporary actual mention of him BY NAME, ie. "Jesus" - because his actual life, profession, etc wasn't at all important to the story. The same literary device as the parable of the Prodigal Son and later, Little Red RIding Hood, was used to invent Jesus, but the Jews and Romans of that era would be much amused to hear that people think of a literal Jesus today. Once you literalize a story, you entirely miss the purpose and message in it because you get focused on superfluous details. Sadly, that's what has happened today with todays' corrupt version of Christianity. As evidenced by Christians' embrace of Power and Profit in their support of the Republican Party, they've completely forgotten who and what Jesus was supposed to represent and his true message of love and inclusion.

When you believe and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior it is because God has drawn you to him and it is a gift from God. You do not have to repent first to receive this gift; because it is a gift and that is what it means; we are saved by Grace and not works. Once you accept this gift of Grace Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit lives within you and you have a desire to follow Jesus and receive a character more like his character of love, forgiveness and mercy. You begin to understand that Jesus is God and that is Gods character. Your desire to sin starts to disappear . Full of love, forgiveness and mercy and that is the true character of God , and you now understand the truth. As for the scary words in the Bible only Jesus can interpret the true meaning.
