I made a slowed down backing track to practice to so you wouldn't feel rushed..... • Franklin's Tower Slowe...
In another time's forgotten space
Your eyes looked through your mother's face
Wildflower seed on the sand and stone
May the four winds blow you safely home
Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
I'll tell you where the four winds dwell
In Franklin's tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you lose your way
Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
God save the child who rings that bell
I may have one good ring baby, you can't tell
One watch by night, one watch by day
If you get confused just listen to the music play
Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
Whichever way your pleasure tends
If you plant ice you're gonna harvest wind
Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
I'll tell you where the four winds sleep
Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep
Wildflower seed in the sand and wind
May the four winds blow you home again
Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew

StichMethod Guitar I'm great! Thanks for asking. Hope all is well with you, too! I've been watching, just haven't commented as often I guess. Helpful lesson as usual! I have to get better at incorporating chord tones, so this is perfect for me, especially since I tend to get stuck in major/minor scales. So thanks again! 🤘🙂🤘

Went to college for music and this lesson is spot on. Its a combo of a major/minor modes what my guitar teacher called "rhythm and blues scale". And yes, the country players used the minor 3rd, but in my experience they almost always hammer-on to the major 3rd from the minor 3rd. Pull off, hammer on, or whatever it really doesn't matter cuz when it comes to this lesson. THIS LESSON IS MOST EXCELLENT! That was a tough concept to explain, but you explained it wonderfully. Thank you, dude.

Way back when I studied the bluegrass style of Clarence White but.... I have been playing Dead covers since the "Captain Trips" album. Incorporating bluegrass into my "rock'n'roll" really helped my understanding of Jerry's improvisational approach. Oh yeah listening to the Flying Burrito Brothers helped too. In the early '70's Tony Rice came along and really expanded my bluegrass playing which expanded my r'n'r playing too. Doing Garcia style solos got me a heavy dose of "wow you have a really unique style." I never explained using bluegrass styling while stringing endless triplets together. That was best kept to myself. From time to time Dead Heads recognized that much of my playing resembled Jerry's style.

Really interesting. I am not a guitarist; and I never understood why I could frequently recognize Garcia playing on a segment of a song when I hadn't known beforehand the song or guitarist. Your comments and demonstration of Garcia's "trick" taken from bluegrass enlightened me to Jerry's distinctive style that I have long been unconsciously familiar with.

Fabulous breakdown, you really sound like him. I call a lot of this call and response. Don’t know if that’s right or not. It makes the body want to move and sounds fresh and inspiring, versus just playing the scale over the chords which gets exhausting quick and doesn’t have nearly the same grooviness.
@przybyla420
@przybyla420 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think one needs the theory to play like this though, just a lot of practice. The theory will probably help you get there faster but might limit you after a certain point of improvement because of the mental hang ups associated with knowing too much and it making you get too analytical.

The wife is yelling at me to do what I promised to do and I just wanna sit here and learn with you :-) I have watched lessons on youtube for years and I swear that yours are by far the best. You teach us WHY the players play what they do. Any player who has been playing for long enough gets bored by playing things note for note and the blues scales gets soooooooo overplayed and repetitious. I still go back to it all the time cause it's what I know and for sure, it's fun as hell. But I want more and that's what you give us. Many many Thanks my friend. So much respect for you. Great lesson, thanks! Is it sacrilege for me to say that my brain hears A as the root (tonic) chord, and D as the 4 chord? It seems like we are just playing the A mixolydian scale (with an occasional blue note thrown in) over the A chord, then D major scale (with an occasional blue note thrown in) over the D chord. Of course they are the same scales, you just have to target the A and C# while on the A chord, then D and F# while on the D chaord. Easy peazy. Even a cat can do it!
@FunkMonkey33
@FunkMonkey33 18 күн бұрын
So if you want to follow a pentatonic pattern, I assume you need to change from the A major pentatonic scale to the D major pentatonic scale with each chord change. That's what I've been playing around with. Both scales fall within A mixolydian so it still works.

In my 60 years, about 2 decades were spent as leader/guitarist of a Latin-soaked classic rock and originals band....... our repertoire was diverse, well-exemplified by a few names such as Santana, Allman Brothers, Steppenwolf, Marvin Gaye, Emerson Lake and Palmer, etc., with the higher contrast stuff to include a few Thelonius Monk and Horace Silver songs. But when it came to whether to add this or other Grateful Dead songs, I had too much respect for the art of playing in major keys......... give ya one guess....... the Dorian habit....... which, btw, was just right for most of our repertoire, but major key material I'd long neglected. I was generous with solos for keyboardist. I'm a mere minute along in this video but quite sure it's going to fill a hole in my playing. In fact, the only song I recall having any major key soloing on that I could play and enjoy was Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?". I get bored QUICKLY, stuck with licks of notes like E-F#-A or 5-6-1 riffs. Nothing to fear..... at 7 minutes begins the mind expansion phase :) In other words, thank you for this excellence. Jerry's imaginative playing and chops aside, if there's a guitar tone I covet, it's that clean but substantial tone with Jerry's name on it :)

In "John Mayer Practicing Dead and Company Songs", John gives this same advice in the context of Sugaree, corroborating this approach (albeit in a casual and less beginner-friendly way). Still, fun to watch. Yes, Jerry followed the changes. John was interested in this. Maybe he saw this video, who knows?

Stich. You are a good teacher. I teach guitar. I am not much of a lead player. But if I play a scale and think to add chord tones and the flat 3 I can sound much better than the guy who was our lead guy yesterday. He just played pentatonic patterns real fast, which was cool, but this is SO MUCH BETTER> thanks. Played this song at the gig yesterday. You are very clear and informative. I am going to go practice this. BTW, it is "whirlwind" not worldwind.

I allways just use random chromatic notes and walk up to the right notes In mixolydian mode ....minor 3rd works great but I think you can also make others sound good

You are wonderful, but Garcia bored the crap out of me. There is a reason why one had to smoke an ounce of weed and drop a hit to “understand” what MrG was saying. Then, the cult following...

Isn't that minor third in Amajor also the major 4th interval in G major ( the middle chord of the progression A-G-D-G-A)?

So you were playing Franklins on a Trey clone, then it's Fare Thee Well all over again, right lol? Btw. it was hard for me to focus on the example because I love cats and I kept watching Quinn to see if he would run away. My cat would never let me do that lol. Also, how do you like playing that Phred? I was looking into possibly buying one once I'm a little better on guitar.

Great job, and the show you referenced was 'One from the vault' Great American Music hall. Don't worry about the video being longer. If someone doesn't have the attention span to watch this , they are not going to be able to play or listen to the Dead.

I've never played this far down the neck. It's a challenge because the frets are so close, it's hard to get my fingers in the right spots.

Okay, I re-watched this and understood it better having just watched your Mixolydian vs. Dorian video. I'd say that Mixo-Dorian video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaS1iqZmj75kj8U )should be a pre-requisite to watching this one. Finally understanding the Jerry Garcia mindset a bit here. I always felt the vibe that The Dead were at heart a Country Western band, and my friends who were Dead Heads would get mad at me when I said it. I'd have to show them original versions of some songs (i.e. El Paso, Me & My Uncle), and even then they'd get ticked off. Nothing to be ashamed of, music is music and rock, even Acid Rock, has many roots, influences, and musicians come from different backgrounds of training as we know. This was a really fun video to watch. Thanks!
