You know, I've heard a lot of of jokes about the Dead that all have basically the same punchline: the acid-head finally gets sober and hears the Dead and says, "What's this crap I've been listening to?" I have to think that this joke was made by people who aren't musicians and don't appreciate musicianship. Sure, their live stuff is meandering. But as a multi-instrumentalist, that's what I love about live music. They're exploring the space. They're trying things out. They're having a conversation using chords and notes instead of spoken English. The music is dynamic, and the musicians are so engaged with each other. Like they said in one of the documentaries (I can't remember if it was "Long Strange Trip" or "The Other One"), but Bobby was saying, "Sometimes Jerry would step out in front and we'd all follow him, or sometimes I'd step out and they'd all follow me." Speaking as one who has often played a very traditional rhythm guitar player role (and found myself struggling with trying to make it interesting and not so "fresh out of the box"), I've really found myself challenged by how Bobby functioned as a rhythm player. And I know this lesson is about Jerry (I hope there is one on Bobby soon if it hasn't already happened), but all that to say the joke about the Dead music being crap is just as unappreciated by this guy as jokes about Ringo being a crap drummer.

well jerry is pretty much a guitar hero so anyone who calls it crap isnt a musician. its like when people call really technical jazz music crap, they just dont know how to interpret it

I’m really enjoying @MartyMusic sharing “skills and scales” (sorry that probably sounded better said in my head than it sounds being read as a comment.. regardless as a 40 year old who’s been playing various instruments since third or fourth grade and picked up my first electric ⚡️ guitar when I was 12 and making music ever since playing in bands (primarily lead guitar) from garages to bars to stages both small and large... I find your lessons extremely well done in a manner that my sons both love and gets them playing and practicing for hours every day. Hell I’ve been playing a more myself siting in and play bass parts rhythm and vocals for them to practice their chops! The best part is you are never impatient nor get frustrated like myself when I’m trying to teach something simple to my youngest and his attention span runs out. Just pause the video and no trouble no fuss! Thanks for being a great content creator! One love yet so many blessings!!.💯🤙🏽👽🧬

I love Marty! I’ve been playing guitar since 92 (was 11) 👽 and just started watching KZbin fo runs and licks and tips that help to expand my skill set znd playing different genres. Jerry is probably my favorite guita player (not because of technical skills.. he had half a ring finger! ) but he was so full of positive energy and was just on his own wave sharing as much love as possible, forgetting and then relearning how to play just before .. the fans/ community of freedom lovers. @martymusic is probably the best teacher I’ve seen so far. . Does a great job of explaining the why behind the what which is essential for understanding theory. Makes it look easy and within minutes I’m jamming along!

Hi Marty, cool lesson as usual. A few people have criticised Jerry's playing for using the Mixolydian scale too much. I don't think these critics have 'got' it. You have explained how and why it is so useful, making it an integral and expressive way to play. And as you also say, don't underestimate the pentatonic major and minor scales. It is what you do with them. Thanks.

Fantastic as always! I get why you're looking at the mode as mixo when playing off the Key of D "Home" position. But I also recognize that shape in that position as the Locrian shape. I get how that all ties together, like at top string in the A position you're playing the mixo scale, and then if you move up a fret to B you're playing the Aeolian shape and then at D you're playing the Locrian shape. You have a bunch of videos utilizing the Pentatonic extensions, could you do a video on model extensions per chance?

So If we are jamming on Playing in the Band.. D Dorian, that is a "minor' sound so we can alternate to Dminor pentatonic as well right? Whereas if we are using Mixolydian like we did on Franklins.... that has a 'Major' sound so that is why we alternate to major pentatonic?

There is nothing like the dead. Greatest band ever in my opinion.....for example: take John Mayer, a 7 time Grammy award winning multi platinum artist (with his own music) that decided to play lead guitar with the Grateful Dead members "dead and company" he claims that he never heard anything like it and it truly captivated him at a time when he was getting tired and bored with music in general.

Why did you choose the 5th of the D to get A mixolydian? Why didn't you choose the 5th of the G to get D Mixolydian or the 5th of the A to get E Mixolydian? Is it because D is the key of the song but A is the "tonal center?"

Kapulaites yea, Ionian isn’t a scale it’s a mode. Mixolydian and Ionian have the same notes. For D mixolydian you would start on A. For D Ionian you would start on D. Basically you’re just playing a D major scale but focusing on A as the tonal center
