This ship, The Graf Zeppelin was not only of massive size and awesome presence, but in my opinion one of the most beautiful airships ever built!! Thanks for posting and sharing this gem!!!

They forever hold awe inspired emotions for me. Wish I could have seen one. I remember talking to a lady who was from Germany when I was a child and had asked her about them; "Oh yes, we'd look up and there they were; giants floating among us. Great silver queens of the air. I'll never forget it." I said to her, "Wow, you are so lucky!"

I can't explain what this video made me feel... I feel anemoia for the 1940s mainly, some music mostly triggers it, and one of my dreams is to own a private rigid airship. much like one of the Hindenburg class airships. that dream may one day become a reality due to the new and coming hybrid airships. they're said to overtake the Hindenburg class airships in the title of largest thing to ever fly. oh, how I wish I can see a new wave of rigid airships... I'm tearing up right now thinking about it

As much as I have been fascinated by Zeppelins all of my 75 years, (my first toy was a zeppelin & bi-plane connected together), I can't help but think that it was an extravagantly expensive way to only save about three days on an Atlantic crossing! I've crossed the Atlantic by ship, twice, once each way & it was a great experience & not cramped, as would be on a Zeppelin! p.s. The last living person to have traveled on the Hindenberg, a woman, died at 95 in 08/21!
@FritzKraut Жыл бұрын
But it had to be done to proof that it can be done by engineers. Even if expensive and a bit extravagant. Today we have space tourists. I consider it much more "extravagant".
@terpodion Жыл бұрын
There was nothing "cramped" about Zeppelin travel. With individual cabins, a lounge, smoking room and dining room it was luxury. It was nothing like flying on a modern jet. It was like riding on silk in the lap of luxury.
@anunheardtruth3071 Жыл бұрын
@@terpodion The lounges were nice but the cabins were cramped and the showers were nothing more than a trickle.

Graf Zeppelin Iooked almost like the Hindenburg's identical twin with the exceptions of the fifth rear engine and the larger design of all the engines! Side by side, they would have been impressive sights in the sky! Great, streamlined silver giants gliding across countryside below! What magnificent sights they must have been!
@7019835 ай бұрын
LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin had 4 engines, like LZ 129 Hindenburg. The most visible difference was tractor propellers (LZ 130) instead of pusher propellers (LZ 129). You might have mixed it up with LZ 127, the first "Graf Zeppelin", with 5 engines.

The Hindneburg Class Zeppelins were the largest airships to ever fly. The DZR was working on an even larger airship during this time, but, Hitler, wanted war. In 1938, Nazi's invaded Poland and the shift focused on war and the Graf Zeppelin and the Graf Zeppelin 2 were dismantled.

When the co. grounded the first Graf Zeppelin, it was not initially dismantled, but was, in rather museum-like fashion, put on exhibit as an educational/historical attraction, where guided tours were offered to the public, through the airship. Most likely, the tour operation was probably successful too, since the airship was world famous at that time.

The Graf ll, Hindenburg, Macon and Akron were truly impressive. Would give almost anything to have seen them in person. However, a bit more than 3 years after the Graf's last flight the Lockheed Constellation made its first flight. Clearly, by the time this ship was built, it was terribly obsolete, regardless of hydrogen.
@conveyor24 жыл бұрын
Airplanes are more about A to B transport and not much more. Airships offered the chance to move around on board and get some sleep in actual beds.
@jgrab14 жыл бұрын
Two different markets. The Constellation could not transport 100 people in comfort at a leisurely pace. Many of the upper class of those days would not have flown on something like the Constellation.
@sherwinfinlay97644 жыл бұрын
Definitely different markets--tiny as those market were back then. However, the Constellation offered greater safety, though nothing like today's jets. Of the later rigid airships the Shenandoah, R101, Macon, Akron, and Hindenburg met tragic ends. The R100 and Graf Zeppelin 2 were broken up after very short lives. Only the rigid ships Los Angeles and Graf Zeppelin had somewhat lengthy service. The German passenger ships required heavy subsidy whereas the Constellation could make some money from wealthy who flew in it and once the plane became available for civilian service, they flocked to it. Often the Hindenburg flew with fewer paying passengers than capacity.

Cruise ships obsolete?

Chance to "get away" e.i trip across the Atlantic maybe a week, not like a cruiseship. Augment fuel with solar or maybe sails=more efficient/cheaper than jets.... Just a daydreamin.

Grosse fliegende Phallussymbole.
