The greatest World Cup Final display in my book. The amount of cleared interception's - headers... Laser-like passes from out the back, that killed the Dutch on quick transitions. Making up the numbers in forward area's, to assist or try to score. A out of this world trivela free kick, that had even Cruyff shaking his head in disbelief. When Cruyff was one on one with him. Cruyff bottled it & passed the ball off to Rep. Bossed the midfield when he strode into it. Made a mug of Cruyff & Rep, when they both attempted to press him simultaneously. He back chopped the ball between them, had them both sprawling to the floor, like wheeley bin's. As great an elite world cup final display, one could ever wish to see.

Yet, despite all your one sided bias against Cruyff, it was Cruyff who won Ballon d'Or largely for being the best player in World Cup in 1974, not Beckenbauer!!! Also, whenever people talk about the 3,5 or top 10 players of all time, Cruyff is right up there along with Pele, Maradona, Messi and others. Nobody mentions Beckenbauer!! Beckenbauer was a great player and deserves to be in top 20 players of all time, maybe ranking in 7-th or 8-th place, but under no condition he was a better player than Cruyff. He just won more team titles than Cruyff, and the reason was the abundance of high quality German players in his generation, whereas before Cruyff, Holland last qualification for a world cup dates back to maybe 30s (certainly not in 50s or 60s) to the best of my recollection If Cruyff had stayed with Ajax, he could have been the first player to win 5 or 6 Ballon d'Or's and as many CL (the older format which only the real champions could play) titles. With Cruyff in Ajax, Bayern could hardly win 3 CL titles in a raw. So, lets respect both these 2 giant players and try not to be carried away with your emotions.

@@13muller9 On the day Beckenbauer was MOTM. As regards Cruyff. I watched him a lot back across the 1970s. He's still to my way of thinking. The greatest European player I've seen. Better than Zidane & Cristiano Ronaldo, who modern audiences & today's TV pundits rank over him. His 1974 World Cup display. Only bettered by Maradona's 1986 World Cup tournament. No other player. He's definitely up there with Di Stéfano, Pelé, Maradona, Messi. I regard Pelé as the greatest player I've ever seen. Due to his completeness in attributes. He had the fewest weaknesses out of all the great players I've seen. Possessing all the tools in the book.

@@13muller9 Thankfully, I at last found a commentator like yourself on YT who does not go "just by stats" unlike modern fans who rate players merely by number of UCL or FIFA WC titles or Ballon D'ors. Football is much more complicated in ranking great players unlike for instance tennis where you can say almost for sure that Djokovic is the best player in history. Football has too many confounding variables plus there is enormous difference in playing conditions between the 1970s or even the 1990s and present. Cruyff and Beckenbauer were true pioneers of modern football. Pele and Maradona were greater individualists but Beckenbauer and Cruyff were better long-term "INFLUENCERS" on the game. Cruyff's management record and influence on football is insane from the 1970s to tiki-taka's heyday. Beckenbauer is the precursor of the modern versatile attack-capable defender.

Who agrees with me that both this WC final in 1974 and the 1978 WC final were the 2 greatest WC finals in terms of overall quality, even more than the Qatar 22 WC final between Argentina and France (great though it was)?? In my opinion, a superior match is not just more drama (like 2022) but also high-quality football for a longer duration. The 2022 final only sparked to life in the 80th minute. Before that it was too one-sided a match. Yes after the first French goal went in, then it was unquestionably world class but 3 goals scores were penalties. There were 2 penalties in 74 but none in 78, and 74 and 78 had a more varied palette of excellence and unlike 2022 (which focused on Mbappe and Messi) it was not just about Cruyff and Beckenbauer but many other players like Rep, Krool, Overrath, van Hanagem, Breitner, Grabowski etc. I still regard 2022 as one of the very greatest football matches of all time but I don't think it deserves the title of best final unequivocally.
