What a wonderful voice Richard Tauber had during his career in the 20's and 30''s. He sings with such passion.

Unforgettable and unique. When I was a kittle child my father was in love with his Tauber records and played them a lot. And I was already fascinated. Tauber was the voice from heaven. His art was divine. He will be immortal. Thanks for the document and the beautiful pics!

What a singular pleasure it is listening to this magnificent voice. I am not entirely sure whether he was classed a tenor or a baritone but either way he was magnificent and a very big man in every sense of the word. I believe the near simultaneous death o these two great artistes of the operatic belle epoque, did indeed signal the end of an age..

Their homes in Austria where side by side Lehar's was full of Trophy heads, being such an Hunter of Deer etc. I met R. Tauber after a concert at the Brixton EMPRESS THEATRE, during the war whilst on leave he was a real gentleman very pleasant to chat with, Thanks for the memories :)

Dear Sir, I would love to know more about your encounter with Richard Tauber. What did you talk about? Do you remember what he sang at the Empress Theatre? I had heard that he was forced to take shelter in a Brixton theatre during an air raid. Was that true?
@saltburner23 жыл бұрын
@@MrAristaeus Tauber and his accompanist Percy Kahn. whom I knew, were doing a stint on the twice-nightly variety circuit after 'Old Chelsea' closed in 1944. They appeared at the Wood Green Empire, Lewisham Hippodrome, Chelsea Palace, Brixton Empress, Hackney Empire Shepherd's Bush Empire, and many other theatres. Topping the Bill, they usually closed the second half. A typical offering would be Schubert's Serenade, Tales from the Vienna Woods, Wolgalied, Frasquita Serenade and You are my hear't delight.

Please, I would like to know where the Brixton Empress was - presumably renamed if not changed. I was very familiar with Brixton from mid 1960s. Around then I first heard and noticed RT on the radio, and not far from Brixtonhen either, but had no idea I must have walked in his footstep.

One of my favourites sung by Richard Tauber is By a Sleepy Lagoon. I close my eyes and I can see the leaf from the tree falling and floating gently on the ripple. He brought those songs to life. No-one at the present day can do that. These songs were romantic and that is what's wrong at the present day - there is no romance anymore.

In fact the whole 'Farewell Concert' was first issued on an EMI LP in the late 60s or early 70s. How do I know? Because I wrote the sleeve notes for that issue. I had the great fortune of seeing Tauber's final appearance at Covent Garden - as Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He was quite superb and no one in the audience could have guessed that he was singing with only one functioning lung. Vivian

Tauber was also a fine pianist and a wonderful conductor-an all around musician! Ive been listening to records of this type since the late 50s--on this final apperance with Lehar in some ways he was singing better than ever--and for the first time i noticed a similarity to the voice of Jan Peerce whom i sang with several times in the l970s--both were Jewish of course--ill bet Tauber would have made a wonderful cantor as did Peerce!
@saltburner23 жыл бұрын
Tauber's father was Jewish but his mother was a Catholic. He was baptised and brought up in the Catholic faith.

He sings it here in four languages! And as not restricted by the 78rpm side-length he can be more expansive - still singing really well just 18 months before his death.

A romantic Tenor like no other. The control of his upper notes is just outstanding. I believe just before WW II started, he managed to escape to England and so saved his life for reasons well-known. Victor Borge found refuge in the USA. Joseph Schmidt was not that lucky. Many years ago I met a young philosopher with whom I struck up a conversation. When I asked him how it was possible for human beings to commit acts for which there were no words in the human dictionary, he replied, and I quote (even decades later): " Je höher die Kultur, umso tiefer der Abgrund."

„Ende einer Epoche“ ist zwar richtig! Tauber had an enormously catholic repertoire ranging from Mozart to material which would have been considered avant garde at the time he performed it but he is indissolubly linked with the brilliant Franz Lehar, who composed some of his great tenor arias and duets with Tauber's voice in mind. „Dein ist mein ganzes Herz“ must count as Tauber's "signature aria". The Marlene archive photos are a bonus.
Wonderful Video ! Richard Tauber was one of Marlene Dietrich`s best friends ! Thanks for sharing :-)

Dear Daniel, Approaching 90, I must conclude my memory is failing. The LP collection is now in India so I cannot check. I could have sworn that we had the farewell concert on an EMI LP as well as the other with the Odeon discs. I do recall Diana Napier accusing me of copying passages from her autobiography but I was able to prove to her that HMV had had my notes well before her book was published. A difficult lady! Best wishes and thanks for the correction and post. Happy New Year. Vivian

1946 recording. Richard Tauber had surgery in 1948 and died a week later. All this was long before I was born but when I was about 14, I'd gone home for lunch from school and just as I was about to leave, Richard Tauber came on the radio. I stood transfixed. I asked my mother who he was and she told me. I had to run to get back to school on time. Many years later I was in a supermarket and they had CDs near the checkout. Among them was a Richard Tauber CD. I bought it. I love listening to him. He had a magnificent voice and put so much emotion into his songs. He was truly the greatest tenor that ever lived.

I found Richard's grave by chance when visiting Brompton Cemetary a few years ago. The caretaker told me that for many years, an elderly lady always came on Richard's birthday and placed a rose on his grave. She stopped coming about a year before I visited. A lovely gesture for a wonderful singer.
