I loved everything about this. The Barker lever sounds are what the organist hears, and they remind the listener nearby that it is a tracker organ. I loved watching Roth's expressions and comments and registrant collaboration, and I enjoyed watching Pétur singing along. Yes, Kiviniemi's transcription isn't much like the piano original, but it's not supposed to be. He is a wonderful organist.

For those commenting on the noisy action of the organ, please keep in mind that the console is a great distance from the listeners on the main floor. In the loud sections, they couldn't hear the noisy barker machine, and in the quiet sections, usually there is far less coupling, making the barker much quieter. Same for the talking. Almost certainly inaudible on the main floor.

This guy has amazing ability on the organ and he must rehearse very and over again,and I would love to hear him live. What ever organ he plays he is the master of it and shows his ability to play change registrations without needing a second pair of hands,in other words the master of his instrument, and hope to see much more. DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE TWO OF THE GREATEST LIVING ORGANISTS TODAY ON THE SAME BENCH---KALEVI AND ROTH. BUT this recording as I have heard it does not stand up to what I have heard before from this Organ---which sounds as if it needs some repairs---noisy which is normal for most French Organs but not this one.
@BurkhardTerhart9 жыл бұрын
This organ needs no repair. The noise comes from the barker lever. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barker_lever
@ailsarodrigues43898 жыл бұрын
The barker lever makes the touch lighter so one wonders why he is thumping away on the keyboard, have a look on the face of Roth and his usual assistant it's priceless, the young guy on the other side doesn't appear to like being told what to do.. Not a good interpretation of Liszt to rushed we want to feel the beauty of Liszt have a look at Roth playing Ad Nos.
@pordzio7 жыл бұрын
Look at the answer to my comment: Petur (the younger one sitting next to the camera) had a fever that day :). He also is a pretty good organist.
@pordzio7 жыл бұрын
Regarding the "heavy touch". Sometimes organists use heavy touch even though it's not needed. I find myself using different touch playing hauptwerk with Szczecinek samples, than with something much smaller, like Ott-Orgel for example.
@geuros7 жыл бұрын
well... hats down to mr Kiviniemi, he's excellent and better than most of organists in this world, but yet not even close to the mastery of Daniel Roth. Which makes it wonderful that such a master has no problem to let play other organists and even do the registration for them. And the noise? The noise is normal, many, many, MANY of the best organs in the world, maybe even majority of them, have Barker levers, but for a good sound you can't record with a camera near the organ, you need to place micros in the nave for a good recording, you won't hear any noise ;)
@sorabji18 жыл бұрын
But why is this arrangement so over-simplified? Where are the sweeping scales and whooshing arpeggios? It appears he's more after simulating the effect of the original without the detail, but it's those details are what make the piece what it is...

I cannot see the point of positioning the microphone so close to the keyboard we’re subjected to the rattle and clunk of the key mechanism. It subtracts rather than adds to the musical experience.
