Original words in the Goethe poem (last 2 stanzas): Selig, wer sich vor der Welt Ohne Haß verschließt, Einen Mann am Busen hält Und mit dem genießt, Was dem Menschen unbewußt Oder wohl veracht Durch das Labyrinth der Brust Wandelt in der Nacht.

Thank you so much. I always love DFD and find the D. 259 particularly sweet - uncharacteristic, in a way, for him. Unique and lovely performance - his artistry impeccable as always. Who is the pianist if I may ask? Thanks again :-)

Gerald Moore, I think. The Singer sounds very much like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. (Very delated answer.. )

@mikejr41387 I would not manifest your own plans within insulting comments to excellent works you could never come close to writing or thinking of.

These are the last stanzas of the first draft, true. In the final draft Göthe got rid of that limitation. "Freund" is a so much better choice. And had Göthe wanted to write a poem about gay love, he'd have done so.

@mikejr41387 Yes i have. He wrote it about the daughter( Christel von Lassberg) of an army officer who killed herself over unrequited love.It is told in her voice talking to the river and her love. Schubert wrote a peice for it but unsatisfied by that he wrote a second. This is the end result. So please enlighten me as to how you can get homosexuality from this?
