Hello, thank you for your kind comments! Yes, I have played this sonata back in 1998 on the cello. This was actually the departure of my curiosity about the arpeggione instrument. I would say it is a challenge on both cello and arpeggione but after ten years of experience now with the arpeggione I think I would feel frustrated if I had to play it on the cello and with a modern piano. There are many things to say about this ; KZbin box is too small... Best, ND

I just recently heard the arpeggione played on National Public Radio, so it sparked my interest. I have a love of ancient instruments and play for my own enjoyment on the Great Highland Bagpipes and my 8' 4' Rucker's style, single manual harpsichord, as well as modern piano and organ. Thank you both for this wonderful performance!

I want to read the "many things you have to say about this," whether the KZbin box is too small or not. I wish you'd make a special demonstration video for us, showing places where (as a player) one instrument leads you to play differently than you might on the other instrument. It's immediately apparent that you and M. Roudier chose much slower paces for most of the outer movements than we generally hear on viola or on cello, for example, and of course, it takes a bit of time to get used to the "ringing" full-throated, guitar-like sounds of the pizzicati--and the almost total absence of vibrato from the frets, as with a gamba. I think it would give a lot of insight to all the violists and cellists who tackle this piece only in transcription. Thank you VERY much for giving us all this rare opportunity to get some idea of the instrument for which Schubert wrote this immortal sonata!

Your comment is 10yo now, but I hope you can read it and know your version is my absolute favourite for this piece. Thanks for sharing it with us!

This has to be the closest recording of this piece to what Schubert might have heard in his lifetime.

It's so good to have a recording of this music done as it was originally meant to be. It's a very much different thing than when it's played on a cello.

Beautifully played and fantastic sound. Both instruments are wonderful. And both musicians are glorious!.

The frets are actually split so that the instrument would play in tune.

Lovely - curiosity gets the better of me. I know you play cello too - have you played this sonata on both? How do they compare as a playing challenge?

Nicolas Deletaille There's an instrument called "Guitar Viol" which is a Modern Arpeggione
@stefanrogers909111 жыл бұрын
It is so much more resinant than a cello on the high notes and I think more would be made and and more music should be written for it.

The Arppegione has a really Gentle sound which is actually a good one, & that's why we have the Guitar Viol which is a Revived version.

Fortepiano designates the early version of the piano, from its invention by the Italian instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori around 1700 up to the early 19th century. It was the instrument for which Haydn, Mozart, and the early Beethoven wrote their piano music. Starting in Beethoven's time, the fortepiano began a period of steady evolution, culminating in the late 19th century with the modern grand. The earlier fortepiano became obsolete and was absent from the musical scene for many decades. In the 20th century the fortepiano was revived, following the rise of interest in historically informed performance. Fortepianos are built for this purpose today in specialist workshops.

In fact, something changes its name when the construction format, the technique and the mechanics change, in this case that is no longer a Fortepiano, was called at the time of his invention as: Keyboard instrument with Piano and Strong, reducing the noem for PianoForte. Something that many people confuse in names, but something that can not be forgotten is that Fortepiano is not the same thing as PianoForte, they are different instrument, but an involution of the other. The PianoForte has a mechanism much closer to the modern piano. The name of the modern Piano (piano) is the diminution of the name PianoForte (Piano). It is not necessary to know much or be blind, to understand that Fortepiano and PianoForte have different formats, Fortepiano still looks like the Harpsicord, while the PianoForte is much closer to the shape of the modern piano.

I really enjoyed your playing and the opportunity to hear the arpeggione, thank you! I gladly keep coming back to your videos! I'm curious, do you play on gut strings?
@RockStarOscarStern6348 ай бұрын
It would be really cool if the Arpeggione had an Endpin like the Cello so that the instrument would sit on your chest.
@RockStarOscarStern6348 ай бұрын
I noticed that you were using your Cello Bow because I believe the Arpeggione was meant to be played w/ a Cello Bow.

Please explain the unusual fret design. Thanks!!
@CarlosAndres-qj3yv3 жыл бұрын
I've seen it on some guitars. Fretted instruments have some intonation inaccuracy, thats why instruments like lutes and viols had movable frets, to adjust them to the key they were playing on. So this kind of fret makes every note in tune
@RockStarOscarStern6343 жыл бұрын
It has frets which make it easier to play in tune. Adding an end pin would help keep the Bowed Guitar in playing position. You can use Standard Guitar Strings on it like D'addario 10 Gauge Flatwound Strings. Adding Geared tuners to it will help it hold tune better.

What kind of music wire or strings is this arpeggione strung with? Sounds very thin and metallic in the treble. Sounds like maybe harsicord wire with too low of a tension. I’m very curious of the whether or not it’s supposed to sound so tinny in the treble.
@FrogToTheFrog Жыл бұрын
Well you’re describing gut… Considering gut was the most used option for a very long time, I’d say it’s gut. It sounds a lot like a Viol, which also uses gut.
