Thank you :) www.patreon.com/cmrr Do we know that this work, which remains very popular, was in fact a kind of " spotlight "?! Johan Georg Staufer commissioned it from Schubert to promote the new instrument he had developed, the arpeggione, a kind of cello-guitar. The arpeggione disappeared, the Sonata remained. Its charm, its melancholy character without heaviness, this spirit of instrumental song has touched all audiences - both in its most frequent transcription, and the one closest to the original, for cello and piano, and in other pairings (clarinet and piano, viola and piano, flute and piano, double bass and piano...). The recording made by Mstislav Rostropovitch with the composer Benjamin Britten, who was also an excellent pianist, is a discreetly nostalgic gem of elegance where the two instruments dialogue like two friends, in a harmony of sonorities that allows each one to blossom at its best, from the supple piano, full of nuances, to the cello that delivers its intimate singing with a modest restraint. And what a sound! An unmixed pleasure. Unbelievable chamber music playing and musicianship. This is why the renowned accompanist Gerald Moore called Britten the greatest accompanist in the world. Thanks for this wonderful new remastering. A treasure.

Slava did not know the work before Britten urged him to learn it for the Aldeburgh festival where they played it for the first time (this performance) ; then they recorded it in the Decca studios and he never played it again. He said after playing it with Ben he couldn't bear to play it with anyone else.

I have played both the cello and the piano part to this piece. As opposed to the cello part, which is in parts of a hair-raising difficulty, the piano part appears to be very simple, but the challenge is to keep it from sounding like a "mere accompaniment". Britten succeeds here. That a minor commissioned work could be so beautiful is testament to the outstanding talents of the short-lived composer.

I _do not like_ Rostropovich’s sound! It is scrapey (as in, scrape scrape scrape), and harsh, and inconsistent here! How can people not hear the constant change in tone as he bows?? I love Britten’s touch and his musicality is so lovely, but-I’m sorry to say-Rostropovich sounds like an amateur! I swear, I cannot be the only person to hear this!

I find both incredibly musical but for some reason it is Britten who stands out above Rostropovich.i have heard this piece many times but never have I felt so compelled by the piano part.

@@republiccooper да, фортепианная партия в исполнении Бриттена невероятно увлекательна. Мой слух настроен именно на неё.
