I’m really enjoying being introduced to some new yarns and patterns through it and, also, love your Celtic / Irish history / folklore section. At the moment I am knitting the Up Helly-aa gansey by Rachel Hunter which is introducing me to a wee bit of lacework.

Delighted you are recognising some of the Irish words - our language is very close to scots gaelic. We have the same word for yellow - buí - as in the drink drambuie, the yellow drop....and we use the word dram meaning drink. And I think our words for water are close - the word whiskey coming from uisce bheatha or water of life....I love languages and am fascinated by the Irish language especially place names as they have been around for so long and are still on everyone's tongue. I love that gansey by Rachel Hunter - it's a beautiful design. Happy knitting!

Hello, Aine! It's so nice to learn from you. I'm in Massachusetts in the States. My grandmother, whose family was from Ireland, knit dozens of Irish knit sweaters and throws. I still have several. I only recently took up knitting again (using her needles--and even some of her wool) and I've caught the knitting bug! I'm still a beginner, but I just knit my first cable stitch item, which I'll make into a pillow, and it's made me feel like a pro. There's something magical about seeing those cables take shape. Looking forward to months and years of new projects and new skills.

Thanks Emily for your lovely comments. So lovely to hear of your Irish roots and the fact that you still have your grandmother's needles and wool, how fantastic to get back into knitting using her stuff. You will love the process of learning more about knitting - and I agree cables are magical, i used to think knitting them was really difficult until I find out how to do them and now they are easy but very slow.....Enjoy your knitting journey!!

@@fraochknits Oh my goodness, cables are slow! I have dreams of knitting a cabled sweater, but it will take me all winter. I think I'll start with a simpler stockinette. I forgot to say, too, that I was very happy to hear about the positive developments in the wool industry in Ireland. So uplifting and encouraging! Thank you for sharing.

Hi again Emily - if you are interested in learning more about the positive changes in the Irish wool industry RTE One is broadcasting a segment on what I was talking about in a programme for the farming community called Ear to the Ground. You can watch it on the rte player on the internet. I'll be watching - it's so exciting that things are moving in such a positive direction - all part of the the move towards locally produced materials and reducing waste and appreciating the value of what we have around us....exciting times!!

What a lovely, rich episode, Aine. Your reindeer cowl is an absolute work of art. So much better than the cutesy reindeer type things we so often see. I was not surprised to hear you were knitting the Kelias shawl. I did one in similar colours many moons ago... When you finish your moon pulls, if you're like me, you'll not want to take it off. It's such a good indoor/outdoor garment. I also recently paired some rustic Canadian thin yarn with mohair for socks and they are a warm and cozy pair that seem to be holding up well. As usual, your Irish history segment was super interesting to me and I could well imagine some of my ancestors living a simple life in a beautiful place with their sheep. Today I'm knitting another pair of socks from Tukuwool which I highly recommend. I'd include a picture if I could figure out how... Thank you for doing what you do.

Have loved discovering your podcast Aine. Knitting again after many years and discovering I knew nothing ! and that the old metal single needles were a thing of the past. Through watching KZbin videos have discovered this vibrant and creative knitting community and learning more about the craft everyday. I am currently knitting a WYS raglan jumper for my son in BC Garn aran tweed and have most excitingly have cast on top down pattern from Knitted Kalevala publication by Jenna Koster called Pohjolan Neito Sweater in a very rustic yarn from Wooly Knits. Keep up the good work and love hearing about the local flora. Hope the pattern sales go well.

I too have only discovered it rrecenlty - in the last three years - I just saw the date I joined ravelry was january 2020 - so only three years ago.....seems longer ago than that but I'm so glad I did. And I have learned so much from watching other people's podcasts - it's partly why I wanted to start my own - to give something back to the community and make more connections with knitters from all over the world. Your pattern choices are great - I have seen those Jenna K patterns and they are really stunning - I want to knit the suolaulu sweater at some stage.... Happy knitting!

Hello again Áine! Thank you for sharing your knits and lovely parts of Ireland. I was in Ireland in October and visited the Hill of Tara, stunning place, it was a beautiful clear day, you could see for miles, clear as to why they chose it all that millennia ago. As for life in the long grass yarn, I just finished a shawl in the beautiful colour of rosegold, think I need to get another skein or two for stash in case they discontinue it. Thanks for sharing again and look forward to your next episode. Happy knitting Vasco

Hi Aine! I actually started watching this episode when it got published around midnight, but unsurprisingly fell asleep not far in 😄 I remember thinking I wanted to invite you to come visit one of the Galway breed farms with me & Sandra, but then zzzzzz happened! So imagine my surprise when later (and awake) I watched & heard you mention my podcast, Irish Fibre Crafters, & Sandra in that section 🤗 I will message you later (now it’s 11pm- I need to start my KZbin viewing earlier 😂) and see what we might conjure up 😊 BTW, don’t put me in for the draw, but congratulations!! 🎉

Wonderful podcast..just discovered this!!! I think rustic wool yarn tolerance also has to do with conditioning as a child😂. I am of Nordic descent and a commercial fishing family.... was wrapped in norwegian and Icelandic wools from day one! There is a pic of me in a Norwegian sweater an great aunt knit at 6 months. Been wearing ( and knitting with ) wooly wools since!

Hi there and thanks for your lovely comments!! I love your idea that tolerance of woolly wools comes from conditioning- it's probably very true. And how lovely to have a photo of yourself as a tiny baby already wrapped up in beautiful natural wools- a great way to be brought up!!

Hi Erica thanks for your lovely comments! Studio Donegal yarns are not scratchy especially the Soft Donegal which is 100% merino wool and is Aran weight. If you want to check out my ravelry page you will see two cardigans that I knit using this wool - one is a cabled caridgan, the peated whiskey by Thea Coleman and the other is a design called harvest moon by Heidi Kirmeier. Both worked out really well with the Soft Donegal. Happy knitting whatever yarn you choose:)

Hi Maud, thanks for taking the time to comment. We usually have a big turkey and roast potato dinner with Christmas pudding afterwards that we set on fire! We have a big tree and present giving and of course Santa vists on the night of the 24th.... What part of the world are you in? How do you celebrate Christmas?

@@fraochknits almost like yours, but we get roast pork and duck, with sweet red claw and brown potatoes with sauce. Dessert is my favourite, Risalamande with cherry sauce. we put an almond in the dessert and whoever gets the almond wins a gift. We dance and sing about the Christmas tree and the presents are under the tree. Then we open presents and get coffee with home-made confectionery and cookies. I am from Denmark.😄
