This is a re-upload of the first part of my Faraday's Electrochemistry series, which I have edited to correct some of my mistakes in the original version.
Here's my original: • Faraday's Electrochemi...
Mountain top joiner shop's cool video on Ebonization: • Ebonizing Wood: Why it...
Sources:
Michael Faraday's 'Experimental Researches in Electricity'
Theophrastus's 'Book on Stones' PDF here: www.xtal.iqfr.csic.es/Cristal...
Michael Sendivogius' Novum Lumen Chemicum or "New Chemical Light" Can be found archived digitally here: archive.org/details/alchymyta...
Robert Boyle's "cloud Juice" quote came from a section of Newman and Principie's phenomenal book on early modern alchemy called 'Alchemy Tried In the Fire' this book is also a great reference for sendivogius' legacy and the idea of sal nitrum.

Current is just dynamic electricity, whereas voltage is static electricity. I have to ponder how an electric motor can work on voltage alone.

I love this so so much. The way you go about making these devices, the way you convey the thoughts and feelings of past inventors, the way you are authentic and make everything by hand, is awe inspiring to me! I never knew about the complex history of the use of electricity. When you learn about these things in school they always skip the story behind the device, the reason for how it got discovered. Which is a shame, because to me these stories make it feel so much more alive and present in the moment. It is the journey that fascinates and not not only the destination!

Over 100 years ago there was the "medical battery" for galvanic electrotherapy, that was a wooden box full of electrode rods hanging in glasses. Instead of only a potentiometer, one model by "Reiniger Gebbert & Schall" included a precise mechanism to lift and lower the set of rods (not unlike a nuclear reactor) for current control. The idea is bizarre enough to be recreated.

Awesome job! My only concern would be with the wood lid on your cell, if you run too much current it might ignite since it will have spray from the cell impregnating it with chlorate, and even a small spark or local overheating can kick it off. Also, for filtering fiberglass works well and isn’t degraded by the basic solution.
@fraserbuilds
@fraserbuilds 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I really appreciate the advice. I was worried about the chlorates in the lid as well, my solution was to wash the lid in a beaker of water after each use, but the chamber certainly had a strong effect on the wood, pulping its surface, So I intend to replace it with ceramic going forward. I'll definitely give fiber glass a shot for filtration!

@chemistryofquestionablequa6252 3 ай бұрын
@@fraserbuilds I just mentioned it because a few years ago I was running a chlorate/perchlorate cell with a computer power supply and platinized anode where I used clothes pins to hold the wires and I had a couple explosions from the wood getting heated while fully impregnated with chlorate. I’m pretty sure one of them was a proper detonation because it sounded like a gunshot, the clothes pin was blown to pieces and the top of the electrode was actually bent slightly which is hard to do with titanium, lol. Enjoy the electrochemistry, it’s the closest thing we have to actual arcane magic and you can do so much with it. Mysteriusbhoice/catboychemicalsociety (he has two channels) has done some amazing stuff in his video with electrochemistry and even tutorials on making your own lead dioxide electrodes. If you’re really enjoying this stuff you should join the catboy chemical society Discord. There’s always cool stuff happening and everyone is very friendly and helpful. Hope you’re having a great day!

Now let's power the electrolysis cell with a Baghdad battery! The psychic Edgar Cayce used for healing a wet cell battery filled with different substances depending on the ailment, thinking that the produced energies of each substance would differ (not simply an electron flow) and travel through wires to the patients body.

You should try to use ancient technology to build an acoustic PHONOGRAPH--- indeed the principle is simple. Even the ROMANS could have done it. A needle connected to a small drum diaphragm and an impressionable surface, wax, metal foil, Shellac, etc. and a metal or parchment amplifying horn. Accurate threads for cutting spiral grooves would be a PROBLEM, but that would not be needed if the recording/play surface, could be linear strips or rolled up fabric or foil, like a tape player. then the strip can be pulled beneath the needle from one reel to the other, for recording or playback. Old ads for the first phonographs often said "Its greatest wonder is why it hadn't been invented hundreds of years earlier". Indeed, Roman tech might be able to produce a "Spark gap" radio.--- all they lacked was the information. It would be very cool to see how such things would have looked in ancient times.
@AerialTheShamen
@AerialTheShamen 3 ай бұрын
Ancient roman armys had the bronze lur, which was likely not just a signal horn but also a listening device like an ear trumpet. They were found in symmetrical pair without attached mouthpiece, so they likely came in a rack with hoses connectable to ears or mouthpiece to send a signal and listen to answer or to listen over distance like a directional spy microphone.
