Tree Support Posts

Using a post pounder tool, some treated wood posts, and some rubber straps to support my standard rose trees (which are topheavy and leaning badly) and my laburnum tree (which is just prone to rocking in the wind). The only video I'm likely to post where you can't accuse me of talking too much!

that was my observation as well- I'm the worst when it comes to such things, but this is one job I wear some hearing protection for.

Your videos are great! I’ve learnt so much, thank you for taking the time. Which rose varieties were they that you can cut back hard and they will flower again? I’m from the UK where we don’t usually do summer pruning but I’m now working in gardens in Italy where everything grows much faster and flowers for longer so the varieties of roses and pruning techniques seem to be similar to yours in Canada. Any time you want to do a video on summer pruning it would be very helpful ; )

I picked up a post hole hand auger from Tractor Supply that can do a small hole like for these posts in just a few minutes. It's a lot less work and over the course of the day it's probably faster. Best $25 I have spent in a long time.

What a beautiful colour, that dark red! Was this a particularly windy season for you there, that caused the leaning?

Hi Linda - yes, we get SW wind intermittently through most of the summer, and then a strong NE wind when it gets bad in winter. I find my trees and shrubs tend to lean as pushed by the summer wind (I guess because they're in active growth at the time), but the laburnum tree rocks back and forth between the two.

Jason, that Laburnum is staked way too high; also it seems to be planted too deep. Woody perennials (shrubs/trees) are best staked as low as possible to allow the top to move in the wind without uprooting it. That will stimulate the root flare to taper and allow the tree to stand on its own faster.

Thanks Annette - we use it as a barrier to invading weeds and to protect the base of the roses from the lawnmower/string trimmer.
