Niles hearing Daphne say “he likes to smell my hair” completey destroys the notion that people in the living room can’t hear what people in the kitchen are saying - which is funny because they act as if the kitchen scene is out of earshot of the living room

So true! It's so close. I just knew the people in the living room could hear every word.

I guess the pretext is that the people in the living room were having their own conversation, and thus didn't focus on what was said in the kitchen. But, yeah, it doesn't really hold water. One of those sitcom things

My favorite gag with that is when Fraiser was asking everyone to name flaws with his character so that he could improve himself. Later on, the conversation moved on and everybody started listing his positive traits, except Daphne was in the kitchen, so when she came out, she thought everybody was still naming flaws and shouted out something like "pretentious!" I like it because it means that she heard that they were calling him names, but she didn't hear the actual words they were saying. The kitchen has convenient hearing properties.

One of the things I really liked about Frasier is that they were consistently quick on the uptake. In most other shows Niles would have been clueless about his resemblance to Rodney for the entire show but in Frasier all he needed was one (egregious) example and he instantly gets it.
@Crazygurl12115 жыл бұрын
Well, it did take Frasier an entire episode to realize that the woman he was dating looked exactly like his mother, even though everyone else saw it right away. And it took Niles several episodes to see his dog's resemblance to his ex-wife.
@333angeleyes5 жыл бұрын
Because most shows (sorry if this sounds insulting) is for the everyman/woman. Which means blue collar, high school educated, average Jane and Joe... The comedy had to be low brow. Frasier was for people with a higher sense of self, no toilet jokes.

I can't help but wonder, what really would have happened if Frasier hadn't talked Niles into waiting a day instead of asking Daphne out right away? Would they have gotten together then and there; saving Niles three years of heartache and avoiding the entire fiasco with both Donny and Mel?
@kendallrivers11194 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would've worked. Remember Daphne herself didn't realize she was in love with Niles until years later. She may have been flattered but Niles was still with Maris although separated and she said herself that she wouldn't get involved with a man whose separated in First Date. Ironically she ended up doing that anyway but that was a different circumstance lol.
@snowangelnc4 жыл бұрын
@@kendallrivers1119 Those are two good points, and I'd thought about them too. On the other hand, Daphne's realization didn't come until after Frasier had accidentally told her that Niles was in love with her. (That could be a whole other topic of what would have happened if he had never said anything.) That was the first time anybody had ever brought up the thought that Niles was a possibility for her, and she went with it. It raises the question of whether or not it was the timing, or if she was ready much earlier and only needed a little nudge in that direction. As for the separation, there are general statements but also exceptions - like the irony you brought up involving Mel. If Daphne had just met a guy on a blind date or at a party and found he was separated, I can see her not being interested in pursuing anything. It would also be in her character to say no to Niles when he and Maris first separated but Niles was still trying very hard to work through their problems and keep the marriage together. There came a point though when everybody had accepted that it was over. At that point I'd say that Niles would at least be in the gray area.
