You can tell that Freddy missing Martin’s funeral hurt Frasier more than the whole “not living up to his expectations” that Freddy thought

That line “Grandpa got on a plane” really does show a main difference between Martin and Frasier. Frasier does care about people, and he loves his family, but he also thinks everything can be talked out and broken down into more easily understood pieces, and he spirals when confronted with the prospect genuine loss in his personal life. If Freddy had called, he would have used all of his education and experience to try to help his son, and it would have come from a place of best intentions and love. Maybe he would have visited later or invited Freddy to visit him, but that wouldn’t have been his first instinct. Martin, on the other hand, was more about people and personal connection than logic and reason. His grandson calling him, devastated about the sort of loss he (Martin) had gone through before would be all the reason he needed to get on the first flight to Boston to be there for him and keep him company through the worst of his grief. Both reactions have their benefits, but it’s good that Freddy seems to take after Martin so much, especially since David will likely take up more of Niles and Frasier’s tendencies. They’ll balance each other out well.

Frasier also can't relate to Freddy the way Martin could, as they are both public servants who put their lives on the line and dealt with similar losses. Frasier could likely treat a patient dealing with that over a course of months and months, but he wouldn't be able to get down in the mental muck and directly relate to such difficult emotions the way Martin could.

Casting-wise, the new Freddy looks like he could be Frasier Crane's son. But the character Freddy is so different from young Freddy. Young Freddy was so much like Frasier and Niles. And now he's more like Martin, even though he was raised by his mom, Lilth. The show did this to bring back characters that resemble characters and tension from the old show to the new show. Freddy is the Frasier-Martin tension. And David and his friend and fellow professor is the Frasier-Niles tension. I don't dislike the new show. But it seems a lot meaner and cheap jabs. It was different when it was Niles, Frasier, and Martin. Because they're family. We're not always our best around family. But with professor, it's a bit excessive.

I'm trying to watch clips from this new Frasier even though I really really didn't want it to happen. I personally don't like reboots. When the original Frasier ended I pictured Frasier and Charlotte getting married and living happily ever after. When a series ends I like to come up with my own future for the stars that makes me happy. So I don't like it when they come back and mess it up. Plus like someone pointed out you just can never recapture the magic. Just isn't possible. I say let the original live on and let us watch the reruns in peace.

Really not seeing how Frasier let him down here. There is so much emotion in this scene but it feels very contrived. So Frasier… what? Should have jumped on a plane the second he heard? How many firemen die in the line of duty? How many psychologists do? What could Frasier have said to console him? It feels very unearned. There was never a time when the son was going to end up in the wrong in any way. Frasier was always going to be the unreasonable one here. Because he represents the old world. It’s so transparent. It’s not fun because you already know who the “bad guy” is. The writers can’t help themselves. They don’t know how to humanize Frasier the way the writers did for Martin. It’s class warfare all over again. It’s boring. RIP John Mahoney. You were the best. You didn’t deserve to have your memory treated this way. And Freddy, next time, go to grandfather’s funeral. You’re selfish. And you admit it, but end up being comforted anyway. Because that’s what manipulators do. Frasier shouldn’t have left Boston for your Mom to raise you. Your grandfather did right by you. And this is how you repay him?

Frasier showed up unannounced, decided that Freddy's whole life was wrong, bought the apartment building and found a conniving way to get Freddy to move in with him and immediately tried to get rid of the things Freddy cherishes simply because Boston was now a better place for Frasier than Seattle.. Maybe Freddy didn't go to the funeral because he didn't want to have to deal with Frasier's fussiness and insistence that everything be perfect and the Martin you so beautifully described would have understood that.

Im a Frasier fan - the reboot is OK - Frasier would never live in that apartment though. And where is even one piece of his African art collection? And what happened to Martin's chair? Frasier hated it but that is the kind of thing he would have kept. David is spot on - big like his uncles on Daphne's side and fussy like this father. Freddy is all wrong. There is absolutely no resemblence to the brainiac kid with allergies from the original and supposedly he was very close to his grandfather but if so he would have become a cop - not a fireman. Hate these rebotts that either have absolutely no memory of the earlier characters or they are in too much of a hurry to throw them away.
