Welcome to another episode of Fratello Talks. This week, you join Nacho, Daan, and Morgan, who discuss the many possible ways of building a watch collection. This includes looking at some common approaches, sharing some sound advice from their experience, and a spot of soul-searching concerning their watch collections. What works for them may not be what works for you, but some of their tips may prove helpful along the way. Ultimately, everyone will have a different approach to building a watch collection, but if you're feeling a bit lost or uninspired, tune in to this episode.

I’m 54 now and been collecting watches since I was 12 .. I didn’t know I was a collector until you tube came along .. I only have 8 pieces in my collection dating back from recent times to 1982 .. 4 vintage 4 modern and they all get worn and were all purchased for an occasion ie birthday anniversary etc all meaningful pieces .. great show guys love your content

Thanks guys, I thought that was an especially helpful and interesting episode! I particularly appreciated Nacho's point about the instagramification of the hobby. In my experience, if you take a beat and turn the curiosity and excitement of "the hunt" towards your collection, learning more about your watches and appreciating their beauty again, you can get just as much, if not more, joy out of them as you would from yet another new watch.

This was one of my favourite episodes from you guys. I related to so many of the points raised here. Morgan's anecdote of picking a watch for the day, and then changing it 30 minutes was so true, it made me chuckle.

Great point at about 25:00 you can find watches you love but it doesn’t mean you need to own them. You don’t have to own every watch you love! Great discussion everyone.

The way I started my collection and learned both good and bad lessons was by buying a cheaper watch to start with, enjoying it for a few months while I save up a little bit more, then sell it to put towards the next watch. It’s a great way to try out so many different watches, styles, brands, etc. The lesson I also learned from that is to minimize your losses (buy used or discounted) and if you find you really like it then success! Then just start saving from scratch for the next one! I’d rather experience more decent watches than have to go years saving up for 1 expensive watch.

That whole placeholder concept is fine to a point. It’s not something to make a habit of however. The perspective that followed was for the most part solid. That saiid, as a whole, for most people buying such. Watch for a good price is going to mean minimizing loss rather than turning a small profit upon letting go of the watch. That goes for a so called placeholder or one’s grail. Most of the time, for pretty much any average collector. Slowing dish the process by raising the bar and avoiding impulse purchases is a winning concept. I’ve been able to give three core watches real meaningful wrist time, that’s important to me.

I'm kinda with RJ as a vertical collector (formerly Heuer Carreras, but I'm now building a small Speedy collection alongside). I think we're always going to be smaller in number than those collectors with a broader horizontal collection, but I think vertical collectors can be some of the most dedicated.

I've learned that I enjoy to have maybe four watch's total. That is the only way I will wear them all on a regular basis

I just collect based on complications and color. Then I match my outfit. This makes me wear every single watch I have.

Ever heard of a "thematic" watch collection, be it a certain brand, dive watches, pilot watches ! Seeing the " A Man And His Watch " book says a lot as although a nice introduction to wrist watches, but this book has a lot of mistakes, here're three examples: Page 82: Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex on the top of Everest. In fact, since 1933 Rolex sponsored the Himalayan expeditions and they used the right words, Rolex worn TO the top of Mt Everest. New Zealander Edmund Hillary carried a 33mm SMITHS wrist watch ON top of Everest. This British-made SMITHS can be seen in the British Science museum in London. Page 103: Omega Alaska Project Speedmasterwas never used in space In fact, in 1977 the Omega Alaska II Project Speedmaster was worn during Russian Soyuz 25 & Soyuz 26 missions to Salyut-6 space station. It was even used during a spacewalk in July 1978! Page 104: Schirra's Speedmaster was the first watch in space (1962) In fact, in April 1961 Yuri Gagarin wore the first watch in space, a Russian-made 17 jewels Shturmanskie. #MoonwatchUniverse

My collection in the future is a book. Chapter 1 is the Heritage : my father's Rolex DJ (1984), awarded to him and engraved by Rolex Montres SA, and mine a 1967 5513. Chapter 2 is the Childhood or 1960s : Speedmaster 321s, Seamaster300s, Heuer chronos. Chapter 3 is the 4 Divers : 4 sword hands Omega SMP neovintage steel, titanium, blue, black, ones. And finally two more chapters : Allrounders and Dress. The collection is about 80 % complete.

The placeholder point is well taken. I think the takeaway is that you can do it with a smaller penalty IF your placeholder watch is from a brand that has proven value retention.

Fuck me dead, guys, if I worked at Fratello I'd refuse to ever touch a Speedmaster, that's how cringy the SpeedyTuesday thing has become. They're OK if somewhat breakable watches for sure, and truth be told I'm sorry I threw mine in the trash in 2007 (could have flogged it instead), but this is like super-cringe. None of you want to swap it out for the superb TAG Heuer glassbox or a ZEP CHronomaster 38?
