I remember eating the 1987 version at my cousins' house. My mom wouldn't buy them, she wasn't a fan of sugary cereals. It was the BEST! I am about to turn 40 and I still talk about this cereal; however, I haven't ran across ANYONE that remembers it until now.

@2 beans 1 cream It seems that most of the really good things go away..Pudding Pops, gum without aspartame, Nugrape soda, the gum in the little cartons with the fruit faces on them, "Where's the Beef?" bubble gum. Yes, I am a gum connoisseur. 🤓

I was born in the eighties and I did not know that the Freakies I use to have in that year was a reboot of the 1970's cereal. I did not even know that the Freakies were created way before I was born. What an amazing discovery.

It was released in Summer of 1975. I was 12 years old and I collected all the prizes AND mail ordered a Boss Moss t-shirt for my little brother and Gargle shirt for me. I ate it the entire summer but I had to buy it. My parents did not buy sugar cereal.

I really liked the 1987 version of Freakies. I was a kid and knew nothing of the original, but I thought the reboot version was fun, and the cereal was really good (from what I remember). I wish I had sent away for the fan club stuff now too.
@Tornado19945 жыл бұрын
I too wasn't around in the 70s. But I was around in '87. The 1987 Version came out 5 years too late. It simply was too out of style by '87. Now had Ralston Purina rebooted Freakies in '82 AND had a Saturday Morning Cartoon made, it would have really caught on.

Wow! I’m surprised this cereal existed and was so popular! Let alone in the 70’s! A concept like the Freakies sounds more like an 80’s Saturday morning cartoon rather than a 70’s cereal, so I’d say the Freakies were way ahead of their time!

I was like 11 or 12 when Freakies hit the store shelves and can still remember in my mind what they tasted like..My mother bought boxes by the case load it seemed just to get the Kool prizes and still have most of them to date..I ate the heck out of this cereal watching Saturday morning 🌅 cartoons on ABC, CBS and NBC..I'd give anything to go back in time to the 70s just for one more taste of that sweet delicious cereal..Freakies Rocked..😁👍

I used to eat this cereal back when it first came out in the 70s. It was interesting that they name the cereal Freakies. During that period in the 1970s, the freaks at school were the Hippies and the Pot Heads.
@gildersleevefan675 жыл бұрын
The original Freakies was replaced by Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs, which I seem to remember coming out in 4th grade, which would be 1976-77. They tasted the same as Freakies and Ralston used the same recipe was used in many different shapes over the years. Donkey Kong cereal, their donut cereal in the 80s (not the superb General Mills Donutz) and I forget what else. But if you ever had any corn-based Ralson cereal, you've had the original Freakies.

I remember it well, you are correct about the characters and great giveaways in the boxes. Is it possible that the marketing isn't as strong with characters and mascots because back in the day cereal was greatly connected with Saturday morning cartoons? Kids would be eating the cereal while watching the commercials. Just a thought probably has nothing to do with it.

As someone who works in Hollywood as a writer, I can tell you you are absolutely right about this. Proven IP will always win out over original ideas these days. I hope it's just a phase and the pendulum will swing back the other way eventually, but I fear this is just the new normal as we eventually descend into the world of Idiocracy.

I think I read somewhere that this cereal wasn't released nationally and only in certain areas as test markets. I don't remember the 85 version but as a kid I remember the original. Although it was similar to Capt'n Crunch. The fun was definitely in the characters on The Box. I think a reboot would be an excellent idea but it would have to be the original version.
@CerealTimeTV5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I wasn't around for the first version, but even I have nostalgia for it just because of the great characters and commercials. They could literally do an online ad campaign via Instagram and Twitter with the old commercials and that would be enough to get people interested.
