It is a good time for musicians. Instead of replacing artists, AI hype has exposed itself. It can not be as creative as we are. Humans are still the kings of art. It will never change.
@Vyrkadian2 ай бұрын
That would be true if all AI technology development stopped today, but it’s constantly evolving and progressing. Creativity comes from your experiences and from the knowledge you’ve gathered throughout your life. AI is currently in a stage of gaining experience and already possesses the combined knowledge of millions of human beings; in a few more iterations, it will surpass us in the creative aspect as well. Even so, I don’t think all is lost. As the video’s creator says, there will be people who listen to anything, and others who prefer music created by flesh-and-blood artists.
@geoinmot2 ай бұрын
@Vyrkadian AI is not gaining any experience or knowledge. It is as dumb as a brick. It's as experienced and knowledgeable as a Casio calculator. But I understand how easily some be tricked into humanizing something that is so far from the human experience. Humans can go a long way with a little knowledge and experience, AI has all of the internet/information from everywhere in the world and yet it cannot understand a single thing. It's just a calculator, man.
@dm8579Ай бұрын
The problem is that "creativity" isn't valued very much. Each genre of music is filled with bands and artists that sounds exactly as a million others. And nothing that is played on the radio is standing out. Let's face it - most people don't care. They are happy with the most generic sounding stuff.

The lack of a monoculture is so spot on. There is this guy Mdou Moctar. He is from Niger. That's right, Niger, not Nigeria. That's truly "middle of nowhere" for most people. But he's out there playing shows and festivals, all because of his songs being traded through smartphones. To be fair, he was spotted by a producer who brought him to western attention, but it proves you're 100% right in stating that no one is going to come discover you, you have to go out and get people to notice you. And the recognition can come from anywhere at any time. So get out there and start doing it. Best of luck, and be unique, be yourself! 🙂

@@FreakingOutWithBillyHume I think the problem with absolutely no gatekeeping is a net negative though. Many young people produce their own music including recording but you can't be great at everything. Being a sound engineer is a whole different profession for itself. Hendrix would never have been able to turn his visions into reality the way he did without the genius of Eddie Kramer. He was a virtuoso in his own right and most people can't be great at several things. That's why the quality inevitably suffers. And that is why most of the revival is around live music not recorded one. The gatekeepers had deep pockets and incredible talent that was specialized in helping those giants like Stevie Wonder translate their language into sounds. That is now mostly gone.

This was a little bit of fresh air to hear. I stopped making music for about 3 or 4 years because I felt like I was getting lost in the crowd and I didn't really have anything to offer that the world hasn't already heard a billion times. So I focused on learning audio engineering. I started school for Audio last year after learning on my own for 8 years before that. School has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone and I have to write music for class, I'm starting to remember why I loved making music. Music has been an important part of my life since the day I saw my first electric guitar 28 years ago. I've been in a dark place lately in my life and I think getting back to writing and creating is what I've been missing. Who knows...maybe I'll make something people can relate too.

"Comparison is the thief of joy"....a sentence for the ages. As both a performer and an AI lyricist and being 80 yrs old, I have the bonafides of an elder, self taught and playing since the '70's. You make a lot of sense so I have subscribed to your channel. My thoughts are that AI offers the lyricist a competent writing partner. So far, AI prompt-generated lyrics always seem to have a "tell", an odd choice of words or forced rhyme that does not work. But for the lyric writer AI can be an advantage. While you don't "own" the music, it can show your lyrics in a profound way and you do own the copyright to the lyrics if not the public domain music/arrangement. The music creation efficiency and correction cycle is just disruptive technology. However, to your point(s), if you can play live, you can still have a career in music. There is nothing like a live concert and the human connection. Before long, AI will be making virtual full band videos with virtual players that are probably indistinguishable from live humans....but they will not go on tour, play at your local venue and give you the live vibes. And, in the end, the creative individual will find a way and we should not cave to the technology......just use it. There are creative remix DJ's that just take a little of this and that from others and make something new....AI is next level and disruptive. As you say, "Comparison is the thief of Joy" Making music has always been a joy. It will remain joyful no matter how you make it. Play on! sub.

I always tell the artists that I work with to keep moving ahead even if they feel like they are not doing totally right. Hanging out at some major label offices years ago I saw how clueless they were. Most of their efforts failed but the business was funded by a few popular artists that had. But they kept operating because they understood how that works. But when an indie artist has a setback it's easy to think it was a massive failure because you're alone and your perspective is too close. So keep going and don't worry about being perfect.

The fundamental difference between creative works by humans vs. AI is PERSPECTIVE. It is an artist’s perspective on life that gives their creations meaning. AI has no perspective, feelings, opinions, or worldview. AI music is quite literally soulless.

we all love ya, Billy. Always with the good advice. As for acoustic music making a comeback in spite of the overly polished shit coming out: the pendulum always swings, lest it become a useless ballbag.

Good live drummers are gold. There is this guy that I worked with a bit in ATL and Nashville and is k ow for his 'pocket'. We would typically have him replace programmed drums on songs that we had started which is of course backward of the best way to do it but that's what I had. Anyway, his new drum tracks were always awesome and so in the pocket. Yet when I looked at the wave forms I could see that he was actually rushing his hi hats and other parts. It made no sense but sounded great so it went untouched. Point being that math and precision has nothing to do with soul and feel.

Important points, Billy. I share several of your vids on my playlist Tips For Musicians. Myself - about 2% of what I do is recorded. I play live solo gigs. Much more flexible and spontaneous. The idea of repeating classic recordings seems incredibly counter to the point artists created those hits. THEY don't even copy their own works. ORIGINALITY is the name of the game, even when you're playing your own compositions for the hundredth time! And, if I learned anything playing behind Johnny Guitar Watson during the short time I knew him, it wasn't guitar chops. It was ENTERTAIN YOUR AUDIENCE! Don't play on stage as if you're alone in a room by yourself. Chops don't mean anything to anyone but yourself and/or other musicians.... a fraction of your listeners.
