I have an old wal mart 4 piece toaster from one of those whatever brands. I just gave it away after still surviving for 20-ish years. I also dont use them often. And maybe that's why it lasted so long but we beat the hell out of it and it always did its thing. In reality its kind of hard to make a bad toaster, the only way to do so is if the wiring is garbage or the heat element is set up bizarre.

For 3x the price, the features on the breville can just be done popping by hand on the bydeem. But the bydeem has the reheat function as well... It's hard to justify 3x the price just for the slow lowering and rising, which will probably also be more prone to breakage.

Just based on price alone, I'd go for the Buydeem. The features of the Breville seem nice, but not at $210. The Buydeem has some great features, plus you save about $140. Also, the Buydeem is available as a 2-slice toaster (however, the price difference between the 4-slice and 2-slice doesn't seem worth it).
@1lmp1

If you want to reheat in Brewil, just use the lightest toast function. It did not brown the bread at all, just warmed it. The prices are ridiculous, even the $70 one. I have a Cuisinart 4 slot toaster, and I got it as a gift. I might have used it 3 times, finally I transferred it to my large walk-in pantry/ storage. I prefer toasting my bread on Ninja airfryer that needs to remain in the kitchen counter. I am lucky to have a lot of counter space and large center island, but to have 15 different gadgets on the open counters is clutter. Anything that is not used at least weekly stayes in the pantry.
@FreakGene

I rarely eat toast or the various items you would cook in a toaster, so I've always done the cheap toaster. However I've always had issue with it taking up counter space. I recently have switched to one of those Ninja flip up toaster ovens as it kinda stays out of the way, and i can cook a lot of other items in it, and I've been pretty happy with that.

One thing I'd like to see on any future toaster tests is trying at least a couple different types of bread. Some of those toasters that burn a light white bread might might be perfect for one of those more dense fresh loaves from a bakery, especially if the dense loaf is cut a little thicker. And on the other hand, some toasters might burn a relatively light white bread even on the low setting. You might be able to test both at the same time even with 2 slot toasters, one type in each slot so the tests wouldn't necessarily take much longer.

I currently have the breville 4 slice toaster except it's lengthwise rather than all four slices along. So it's a longer slimmer toaster which I like. I've had it for 7 years and I have never had a problem. One thing I liked about the breville is it feels substantial. It doesn't feel cheap, and also I don't know if you noticed but on the breville you can actually watch the light counting down as the toast is being toasted and I really like that feature. I will add. As a side note, I really like to when you did the test on the toaster with the little screen on it that It was all touch tone like your phone, but I guess that's the one that only lasted a year and a half so I'll stick with the breville

We have had the Breville model for 6 months now and we love it. The led on the toast level slider is also a countdown timer, and flash's constantly to let you know how much time is remaining. The crumb tray is easy to access on the bottom with a simple pull out tray, and the beep at the end of the toast is great because you can go do something else and will know when to come back for a hot piece of toast. And yes the auto lower and raise is a nice feature. It toasts bagels to perfection along with toast. We hope it lasts a long time and if our other Breville appliance's are any indication it most certainly will.

We have the Breville Long Slot toaster. It has two long slots, which each accommodate either two standard slices, or one long bread slice. The long slots are nice for round loaves, more country style breads. We've had ours for over 10 years now, still working great. One thing that I think can cause some people to throw out a toaster, is when they start tripping GFCI outlets. I have had to blow out the toaster several times, making sure to get out nearly all crumbs. They were likely causing a small leakage current to ground, tripping the GFCI feature in the outlet/breaker.

On the one hand, that Breville motorized toaster that automatically lowers and raises the toast may seem frivolous. I love toasters but the one thing I love about toast you cant do with them..add butter before you toast it so it soaks in. I use a toaster oven to make toast. Used to use the big over when I was young before toaster ovens were cool.

I think the tongs are more useful for when you're toasting something smaller. Like English muffins and some breads are smaller and stay below the surface when they are popped up, so you have to reach in to pull them out. It's risky trying not to touch the hot sides like that. So I usually use something to get them out, but obviously you don't want to use metal or plastic to reach into a toaster (one can shock, the other can melt). Never heard of these wood toaster tongs before though. I'll have to look them up. we have a long 4-slice toaster, which fits those wide flatter sourdough slices, and those often don't stick out of the top when they're done.

Funny the Breville trying to be all high-tech without levers to push the toast down, yet the darkness setting is.. levers. Guess the factory ran out of buttons.

I was considering buying a new one that has a count down/timer on the front so I know how much longer I have to stand there or if I have time to leave it to do something else but also so the noise does not startle me. Surprisingly that is not a common feature 🤷‍♀️
@scaper8
@scaper8 Жыл бұрын
It's not very common because most toasters don't use any kind of timer. They have a bimetalic strip like what you'd find in a thermostat. It gets hot enough, the strip bends one direction away from the switch, and the circuit is broken. That is also why, if you're toasting enough bread to need several runs of the toaster, the later batches are always less done. The toaster is still hot, so it runs for a shorter time to get to the same temperature.

The toaster I have has a digital face on it to tell me what number it’s on and has a timer and reheat and it’s dope idk if I’ll ever go back to having one without a timer I like knowing how long it’ll take to toast stuff

I probably wouldn't go for anything more advanced than the Buydeem. My parents bought a $120 toaster a few years back and it crapped out on them within 3 years. My $20 toaster is still holding strong after year 8. Worst part about their toaster was the extremely loud beep that played when it finished toasting. There was no way to lower the volume or turn the beep off. My parents room was next to the kitchen so it would occasionally wake up my parents when I woke up before them lol hopefully the Breville has volume controls

I just purchased a toaster from Amazon by a company named WestBend called quik serve toaster ... It's a very interesting toaster you load it from the top like a regular toaster but when it's ready it shoots what's being toasted out from the bottom of the toaster onto a built in tray... It also has bagel and gluten free buttons as options... I think it'll be a interesting review for you to do.

I have that Buydeem toaster. Mine doesn't toast well. Only the center of the bread toasts. The bagel, defrost and reheat settings do nothing. I really miss the bagel setting.

One test i would like to see is the “skip around”. Where you toast beck to back at different levels. Like someone comes in and wants dark toast, then the next person wants light, without cooling the toaster in between. This is probably more of a two slot issue, but it could be an issue when cooking for a crowd.

I just bought my wife a breville espresso machine and thought the same about the plug so I looked it up and apparently breville patented it. So it will be a while before we see it more widely adopted.

Some years ago I needed a new toaster. My old was a electromechanical nightmare. Not advanced and yet very imprecise and uncertain. So I went to the stores and looked. There were a lot of crap or extremely expensive toasters, and then I found a store selling off a model of more advanced toaster from Philips. It had IR sensors that checked the toast level of the bread and a electronic control board. It had a lot of features for reheating, bagels, buns and so on, and it was sold for what was basically $30. So i got one. I've had one issue with this toaster. Once i managed to power it up in something looking like a diagnostic procedure. All LED's were lit in patterns, the toaster elements were run in some kind of pattern and it sounded funny. But that was just once in several years. Powering it off an on again seemed to have everything back to normal. Didn't really think much about it until three years later when I walked by a store that had that exact model of toaster posted with a lot of information of how revolutionary it was this "new" model that had all kinds of advanced features, and it was priced at only $130... I did check and it was the same product number, so exactly the same model of toaster, just sold at more than four times the price...

I haven't owned a toaster in 20 years, I use my toaster oven and sometimes even put frozen waffles in the air fryer to heat up. Can't believe that $350 high tech toaster only lasted 1.5 years, but no one needs a $350 high tech toaster in the first place.

I wonder if you used the "a little more" feature on the Breville, if it'd work similarly to the reheat function of the other toaster. I guess it might brown a bit, but that's not a big deal.

looking at the edges in the lower parts of the toasts looks like it would be better to put them upside down?? So the round shape of the bread matches that tooast - no toast edge and the top that is more sunk into it gets done entirely.... Worth a try

To save space, I've used a Breville toaster oven that cost around $125 for almost 10 yrs. Works great for toast and any size bread, buns, bagels. I really don't see any advantage to having a separate toaster.

i bought mine around the same time was $200 but maybe a larger size. It works great toasting but have gotten the error message recently to where it wont work. Have to unplug and replug over and over again pressing buttons and trying different things to get it to work again. Seems fine right now but knocking on wood 😂

I have a sage toaster, it looks similar to the breville toaster, I'm not sure if there is a difference between the sage and breville toasters, but maybe you could do a comparison between the two someday to see if they are different?

I'm insanely picky when it comes to my toast. The best toaster I ever used belonged to my workplace when I worked for one of those survey places that were at the mall back in the day. They had a Sunbeam toaster that had small slots so you would not be able to put a bagel in it but you could put an English muffin or a Pop-Tart or a piece of bread. The bread came out perfect every time. It was the most amazing toaster. As I had to replace a toaster the last time about 10 years ago I bought a Brevel two slot and it had been discontinued because it got so hot that people complained. It toasts amazingly and I even bought another for our condo in Florida. The tongs that you were using I don't use them personally but my parents have a pair that they use consistently because things are too hot for them to touch. I think people that cook their fingers get more used to the heat and so it doesn't bother us as much.

For the price of the Breville you could buy a solid toaster oven that does everything it does and more. My family owns a Wolf toaster oven after our cheap >100 dollar one started to go. (Heating rod failed.). That cheap one made it over 10 years and I could make perfect golden toast and it beats the Wolf on quesadillas.

I don't think its very significant but, doing one test right after another might burn the toast. The toaster will already be heated from the lower setting test and maybe will get more brown then if you ran the higher setting from cold.... if that makes sense.

I was thinking that too. How long did he wait before starting subsequent tests on a given toaster? There's a reason I have to (well, should) pre-heat my air fryer so that whatever I am cooking gets cooked at whatever the recipe calls for. But, for toasting my bagels or English Muffins, I just go with either 5 or 6 minutes and they are all done.

I like using my ovens broil setting, if you haven't tried it, you toast the one side quick, the other stays non toasted, you put your butter on the toasted side and fold like a sandwich. Less crumbs as well

Not sure if you mentioned it and I missed it, but it seems on the Breville when you select lets say 5 for brownness, it appears the LED counts down/goes to the left as it toasts, almost like its giving you a count down. Interesting.

A timer with auto pop-up and bagel feature are all I need. I don't need a toaster with a built in elevator! I'm surprised they haven't added a camera and video screen so you can see how brown your toast is getting. Actually for the price they're charging...
