Furthermore, we get a great take on Lindsey and how her living situation and her foray into "freakness" is juxtaposed to someone who actually comes from a strict household; Lindsey was thinking "Oh boy, I tried to warn Nick, and NOW he's about to see what I have to deal with, OH BOY....", and then her father comes and gives great life advice for a growing young man that actually may have put his own father's words and care into perspective. Then on top of that, he ends up dancing with her parents and saying "this is the best family ever" or something as Lindsey stands there thinking, "Aren't these the same two square people that I see EVERYDAY, why are they so fun now??" Which lends itself to her own introspection that, "maybe it's not them, it's me". Great show

@RoarOfWolverine6 жыл бұрын
snarlingrabiddog5150 That vampire gag was a bit he created for SCTV back in the 70s and 80s. He was named Count Floyd and was funny as shit. He was always trying to sell 3D glasses and other crap to his audience. He was supposed to be one of those character wrap-around to those late night creature features and it was brilliant satire of those type shows. The movies he showed were always titled Dr. Tong’s house of.....”, the House’s always changed, but what never changed were the objects they would shove towards the camera back and forth, as though it were in 3D, when actually it was in normal 2D television. Dr. Tong was played by John Candy. SCTV had some really funny stuff. Far funnier than anything on SNL in the last 30 years. SCTV had a lot of talent and the entire cast were Canadian. That was where John Candy started, as did Joe Flaherty (playing the father here), Rick Moranis (before Disney ruined him by shrinking everything), Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara (most famous for playing the mother in Home Alone) Eugene Levy (American Pie) Harold Ramis, RIP (co-writer of the original Ghostbusters and also played the role of Egon in the movie) and Dave Thomas. Some real comedy gold there. Being Canadian, many of the SCTV stars have done projects with Rush. Rush is the pride of Canada, they’re like kings there, so every Canadian wants to do projects including them. Geddy Lee recorded with Dave Thomas and and Rick Moranis on there Great White North album. The Great White North was a funny skit that Dave and Rick created on SCTV, but was so popular, they made a movie around the characters called Strange Brew. Not a great movie, but they were very popular at that time. I guess Rush invites Joe to do his Count Floyd to introduce the song “The Weapon” the same way they got Matt Stone and Trey Parker to make a South Park skit with the kids playing Tom Sawyer”. I have seen that skit several times at their live shows. “Those aren’t the right lyrics fatass! That’s not Tom Sawyer, that’s Huckberry Finn” - Kyle. “ I’m Geddy Lee and I’ll sing whatever lyrics want... a one two.... a one, two, three and......” - Cartman. Then Rush would come in with Tom Sawyer. Must be nice to have Matt, Trey and Joe (Count Floyd) itching to work with you.

The other thing you have to know about this is, Joe Flaherty is portraying the kind of commentary that many of us who grew up in that era had deal with from our parents, e.g. "That music stinks", "Does that guy actually know how to sing?", "You can't understand the words", "Let me know when they learn how to play their instruments", etc. They're satirizing that whole thing that every generation of teenagers go through, since at least the 50's, when we've had to listen to our parents criticize the music we listen to. And then, as Bill Cosby once pointed out, those of us who get to become parents end up having the exact same debate with our kids who are listening to music that WE don't think is as good as the stuff WE grew up with. Mind you, Flaherty's character goes about it in a far more erudite fashion that most of us got from our actual parents.
@MrAdamGC5 жыл бұрын
Even growing up in the 80's and 90's I had to deal with that. It got even worse when rap music went mainstream and thus started the 'Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics' sticker thing. Since (of course) my parents didn't know the difference between gansta rap and hair bands; they insisted on screening EVERY SINGLE ALBUM I BROUGHT HOME for awhile. Life got MUCH easier around my house when I discovered classic rock!! Of course in this day and age; neither the kids nor the parents are paying any attention to song lyrics anymore. So the current mainstreamers get away with singing/rapping about whatever they want while their listeners instead attack songs from the 1940's (far less money to be lost there).

Neil Peart wrote lyrics and books in addition to an amazing drumming career ! He's a true dedicated artist.

Such a great show. What a shame it was cut so short.

Anyone who knows Joe Flaherty's past realizes that he was just speaking a line from a script in this scene. In fact, people in the know would find this scene funny because they know that Joe Flaherty believes the exact opposite of what he just said.

I don't play the drums therefore I will not make an idiotic comment on who is the best. They all practiced their art and got to where they got through hard work and dedication. They are all very good.
@sod0m7 жыл бұрын
I've played drums for 22 years and I still don't know much, but I can tell you that comparing great rock drummers with great jazz drummers is sorta like comparing a really great sports car to an F1 car, it's just a different beast entirely. No accounting for taste, though. Everyone has their favorites.

Exactly. It's like comparing noir to science fiction.

The best part is the actor playing Mr Wear, Joe Flaherty appears as Count Floyd in Rush videos in the 80s.

I like how they're saying Peart the old fashioned way instead of the new stupid way.

No one said "Pee-rt" back then, it would have been weird if they did, as if they had knowledge of the future.
@Frip365 жыл бұрын
@@handsomebrick exactly. it was Pert back then and it should remain Pert. What the fuck is this Peeeeirt business? If I were him I'd have kept the real name to myself.
@chocomanger68735 жыл бұрын
Old-fashioned way? Like you know how the name's supposed to be pronounced originally? The new gay way is probably closer to the original than your way. Anyway, I say it sort of halfway between both.
@Frip365 жыл бұрын
@@chocomanger6873 The old fashioned way is Pert. Not Piiiieeert. Niel screwed everything up when he let the cat out of the bag. Pert was a cool name.

1. The writer does not assume that. The character does. There's a difference. The character is obviously a man who loves the music he grew up with and doesn't know anything about the modern stuff. I was merely paraphrasing him in my video title. 2. Don't know what this has to do with anything. This show takes place in the 80s. 3. If you're such a big fan of Neil Peart, you'd know that the dad did the intro for "The Weapon" during the Grace Under Pressure tour, and this whole scene is a big joke.

mr weir treated nick the way that he wished his own father would
@jerodast3 жыл бұрын
I like to think that Mr Weir realized, from Nick's reaction to his encouragement, that perhaps Nick's dad wasn't such a smart man, and in fact his brand of parenting is much, much smarter. Hence ending the lecture with a great drum lesson :)

I literally lived this scene without ever seeing the show at the time. My grandfather was born in 1912 and lived with us when I was a teenager and I was a drummer. He’d come in with his hands over his ears and say “what is this noise” 😂 he dragged me to his room and started playing Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa and say “this is real drums”

The best thing about this scene is he treats Nick like an adult, with respect, and gives it to him straight. No BS, so a kid like Nick recognizes it's real and it resonates with him.
