Here's the sad thing, this guy's a teacher, he doesn't have that fortune 500 company. So either he was a jock, or he knows that he's basically lying to them.

@@jondavis2790 not necessarily. The truth is that whatever happens in high school, stays in high school. Whether or not a person becomes a success has nothing to do with a person's experience in high school. High school is a phase. It passes and we move on with our lives.

The notion that all jocks end up as losers and all nerds end up as winners is obviously a myth, though there are instances where it turns out to be true. That's coming from a nerd, by the way.

He is just saying this stuff to have them keep things in perspective, just because your life sucks now doesn't mean it always will. If any teacher cared that much about kids getting bullied when I went to school I'd die of shock.

Some of the biggest "nerds" I knew just happened to be athletes as well. Myself included. I was a 3 year starter in football and baseball in high school but was also in the AV club and critical thinkers group. Had chances to play baseball in college but passed it up because I knew just focusing on school was more important. You can still be an athlete and book worm too

That's a really great point. Sam and Bill have already tasted the temperay spoils of highschool rah rah by kissing those 'popular hot girls', they moved on from it pretty quick. Sam eventually broke up with Cindy and both Bill and Sam are content with themselves and play D&D, doing nerd stuff.

From my expirence in highschool, the jocks especially the confident ones actually cared about grades and success and were in the honor role classes. After high school they were fine. The so called nerds spent way too much time playing video games and watching movies at home, like myself were the kids in the intermediate or special ed classes. I graduated high school in 2017. I now work in a warehouse in an ugly industrial area. And I still love my video games, music and movie's... And I've never been on a date. But I am original and really creative.

I understand that it’s a T.V. but people actually believe that life will hand them reward just because they had a difficult time. The children will just accept their beatings waiting to become the next Steve Job and to pass the time they watch Monty Python, instead studying financial responsibility or Computer engineering to actually become like Steve Jobs. Oh and if they invent an awesome device but don’t have the confidence or Networking (Social) skills to promote it

To an extent I can understand why people don’t care for most educational course, considering the information you learn is pretty much useless and in the real world and poorly taught. But, you must be educated despite how broken the school system is. It also eliminates irresponsible people because if you can’t “keep up in the classroom how can you keep up in a game”.

You’re correct that many players do, because you must meet curricular requirements before extracurricular activities and athletes can get college scholarships. But, some don’t care and the coaches are corrupt and only care about winning games instead of the players. So they help the players cheat until seasons over. I have seen this so many times and tried to help but you can’t care more than someone else.

Disgusting logic that is. It all ends up with "geeks" and "jocks" hating each other. Instead, it may be better not to take any shit in the first place, learn to deal with conflict, so that someday, just perhaps , you'll be friends with the guy that pumps your gas...

I agree with what you’re saying but considering that Mr. Fleck went through torture day in and day out just to make average salary while being overweight and single wouldn’t inspire confidence in my future if I was one of his students. I would want to learn entrepreneurial and social skills, how to become a physical fit, confident and intelligent person. Not how to sit passively and wait to get a DREAM job. I can promise you that they will end up the same without any actual help.

Though it still hurt to see people with the potential to do good become nothing but again if you truly want to be the best you must be willing to push yourself not only in practice but in the classroom and life. As for interest I have many, I can’t just stare at a wall and wait for the next event. That when the bad voices come (shudder). Kidding but seriously life would be so boring with only sports.

A scene that tells the sad truth about nerds. This is why I loved this show. It didn't have a happy ending. Leaders go to Ivy League schools...not nerds. And this teacher is still a nerd while his tormentors are probably way more financially and socially successful than him. I mean...look at the real life actors on this show. Who's the most successful? James Franco. Haha...the nerds lose.

Ask yourself does the teacher look to be the pinnacle of success? No, he didn’t acquire the car, the apartment or the girl. Watching Monty Python to assuage the pain of being abused in High School doesn’t give you the skills to run a Fortune 500 company. Honestly, if they do create some success in life they will most likely become jerks to their subordinate thus continuing the cycle of hate.

I don't know if Sam Walton was a nerd, but Steve Wozniacki was, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Google guys, Steve Jobs. Michael Jordan is probably the most famous, rich and successful professional athlete of all time. Any of those guys mentioned above are much richer , more influential and these are only a few of the so called nerds. So all of you saying he is lying to them, he is saying you have a greater chance of becoming ultra successful than those jocks have of being a regular professional athlete.

Why must being a “Jock” and a “Nerd” be mutually exclusive? Can’t I improve my body through sports and improve my mind by reading classic literature?Sidenote; considering the A/V teacher is not a C.E.O. of a Fortune 500 company would you really trust him as a guide? He took all that mental and physical abuse for nothing and is telling kids to do the same. I know it’s a movie but still they should be improving their self-esteem and social skills not watching British comedies to assuage the pain.

This is just a movie, this isn't real. Look back when you were in highschool. I saw a bully in every different shape, size and color regardless if they were jocks or geeks. And everyone hated that bully. Don't you remember some nice jocks and nice geeks? We never saw a group of the same color or same tag hanging out in the same place. I saw a mix of people hanging out in different groups. BTW this doesn't apply to the 70s or 80s if you were in highschool at that time you're royally fucked.
