I'm constantly amazed by the creativity that goes into many of Fred Astaire's dance scenes.
This is one of the two great dance sequences from the fairly lacklustre Second Chorus (1940), and has Fred Astaire conducting the Artie Shaw orchestra, while tap dancing and doing a terrible job of pretending to play a trumpet. Nice to know there's at least one thing he wasn't amazing at.
This was a strange clip to work on. I had to use some very subtle image stabilisation, as the original source was had a constant slight shake to it. It was also a little flickery, which also needed fixing. The audio on the higher quality version I was working from sounded absolutely horrible, so I substituted the audio from a low quality copy, which, weirdly sounded far better. Apart from that, upscaling to 2K worked pretty well.
Fun trivia - Fred Astaire later said that this was the worst film he ever made. Artie Shaw was to claim that it put him off acting. Meanwhile, Paulette Goddard was superb, and stole the show.
