I have always had trouble with getting too fast with my upper body and hands. It really helps me to do the "pause" at top of swing allowing my lower body to initiate the completion of the swing after the pause. This method is the only I have found to get better tempo and eliminate "throwing" the club.

I saw Fred Couples play in the Bicentennial Classic at Royal Melbourne in 1988. What a spellbinding rhythm! I would describe his swing as a mixture of old and new school… obviously Fred is very supple. He has long played the supposed 'new' flat footed backswing, but he uses a combination of that with a very 'wristy' open faced club head action Henry Cotton would have been proud of! Could watch that action for hours…sooooo smooth!

The two most underrated Fred Couples facts that I didn't know: huge calves, and the man doesn't hold a grudge. To say he admired Tom Weiskopf, wow. Weiskopf totally insulted Couples on Golf Digest back in the 90s, and later apologized for this. Obviously, apology accepted, with no hard feelings. With Couples, the Legend just continuous.

@@ken2181 He gave an interview where he claimed that Couples had the greatest talent with absolutely no goals at all. No fire in him to win or reach for more etc...without ever even talking to Fred Couples about anything to do with his golf or his life period. I know this is three years later but there just isn’t a more beautiful swing than Fred Couples’. I find it interesting that he said Tom Weiskopf’s was his favourite swing, as it was always mine, when I was playing off 8 handicap at age 15 (I’m the same age as Freddie). I always tried to copy Tom Weiskpf’s swing when young but as I got older that would hurt my back. Now i have much more of a Freddie swing and it suits me fine. No back injuries! I’m not playing off single figure handicap anymore but that’s down to a career getting in the way and keeping me away from golf for 38 years! Freddie is loved by everyone because he is a genuine nice guy, a gentleman and still a great golfer. I love watching him. Thank you for posting. Very interesting video.

I am only 5'4" and I have a very steep backswing like Fred. People are always telling me to shallow it out. But I generate a lot of swing speed through the ball, and I get a high launch angle into the greens. But like Fred I was also blessed with wide shoulders, and a narrow hips. This might not seem like a big deal....but it helps generate power, and I consistently out drive my 6 foot tall buddies who think I just muscle it.

I remember hearing this story where the announcers said to him 'Do you realize that you ALWAYS hit the center of the clubface ... ALWAYS'. He said 'No, I didn't know that'. Wow, what a state of mind. I still play like it’s a race to finish though 😂

i think i might have asked him about his grip. no one teaches that grip, probably because they can't grip it like that themselves. i always wished i could get my hands to work just a bit like Fred's, but couldn't. then one day i discovered a simple drill, that gets the hands working at least something like Fred. You just hold your left arm out with just your left hand on the club, and the back of your left hand facing up to the sky. then hold the club there until you feel the weight in the joint of your left wrist. then just swing back, putting your right hand on the grip as you swing back. it, also, helps the right arm to fold into position, too. you will see with Fred's swing how the left side of his head presses down slightly in the start of his downswing. then, when he moves into position he swishes the club up into the follow thru. and, this is the hardest thing in golf to do. the head and the hands are virtually doing the opposite to one another. but, at the same time they have to work together. i always wished i could this, but couldn't. then one day i discovered a simple drill that helps me to do this.

I know he's too good to quit playing right now, but Fred would be amazing in the booth for one of the networks.

He’s as cool and easy going as his swing. Lovely guy

He has a bit of a homemade swing that is not easy to duplicate. He brings the club back on an outside-inside path (opposite of what is typically). Then, he makes a very athletic move to drop it back into the proper slot on the downswing.

Such a class act, one of the best yet lazy looking swings but so good to watch over the years. One of those players where watching every shot including putts is an education and makes for great viewing.

Freddie’s swing is the greatest. I looks like he’s not even trying. It’s amazing to me

A pure athlete and great swing, unique to him. If he had a weakness, it was his putter.
