@@Elitist20 for those who don't know, he got Parkinson's, in the early 70's, his pension worth nothing and the actors union did nothing (except stir untrue stories such as he was an alcoholic), after investing in some film projects that all flopped, he was finding he couldn't afford the medical costs. Many many years later it took a local TV campaign to get some support to help his wife get a carer for him eventually moving into a nursing home where he passed away. Too little too late. In a nutshell, he was left to rot after his money dried up, no one wanted to help until a story on local news guilted other actors into doing something to help him, but even then it wasn't salfless, it was a PR exercise for them.

Great scene - one of the best things about this completely brilliant comedy is that EVERYONE gets the piss taken out of them - not just the unions, but the management as well. The whole society is shown as corrupt, and the only person who wants to show this corruption for what it is loses out, whilst all the others pretty much get what they want! And Fred Kite is a totally unforgettable character.

This wonderful film's sheer GENIUS I have always found quite overwhelming....and 'sad' for we'll never again see the like. Roy & John Boulting had a truly amazing 'eye' but now the 'kaleidoscope' of life has now taken on a pretty unsavoury focus....due in no small measure to Ken Tynan's 'eff' word in April 1965. PLUS atop that a relentless cynicism which drags MOST cultural attempts into a gutter of smut and largely 'wall to wall' depravity. Doomed Mr. Manwaring.....DOOMED I say! LoL!

British Comedy in its heyday. For year my dad and I used to listen to the Goon Show every Saturday at noon here in Australia. I learnt an aweful lot about how one can manipulate the english langauge from the Goons and the Likes of Morecombe & Wise, Two Ronnies et al. These days, to my mind at least, we are inundated with truly mediocre American 'laugh-a-second' idiotic 'see-it-coming-from-a-mile-away' sitcoms.
