My brothers girlfriend once left a random burnt disc at our place back in ‘07. It had ‘TBS Louder Now’ written on it. I’d never even heard of Taking Back Sunday. That album changed my life. The song structures. The production. Heart wrenching moments in tracks like Miami and My Blue Heaven to the aggression in Error Operator and Spin. I missed the boat with TBS’s early punk/pop stuff and to be honest - all follow ups to Louder Now just haven’t hit the mark. Fred’s influence at that time is undeniable. And as Valentine said - Rubano’s playing is immaculate. It’s a shame to discover there was tension in the band during this era but at least one of the best ever rock albums came out of it.

Tell All Your Friends was the first record I heard by TBS when I first started high school, but WYWTB and Louder Now were the two records that really got me into music outside of radio hits by random pop bands. They opened up a whole new world to me and essentially turned me into a full-blown “emo” 😂 They also came at a really dark time in my life (a series of family deaths and a house fire; unlucky, I know 😅), and by listening to them, I was distracted from my real world troubles as well as guided to look inward and discover things about myself including who I was and what I wanted to do with my future. Because of this, I can safely say that without that band, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Now I’m an aspiring musician and I’ve been practicing multiple instruments including guitar, piano, and ukulele, bass, and drums, along with poetry/lyricism for the past year now when I’m not doing college work. It was that rotation of TBS, MCR, and FOB which shaped me into the person I am now, so thank you Fred and Matt for contributing a ton to my personal development and opening me up to a whole new interest in the art of music. You were the butterfly effect that kickstarted my world.

You guys made some big shockwaves. Just remembering how your musics impacted my teenage and young adult years almost brings a tear to my eye. I'm from Brazil and trust me, every person who did give a listen (and understood the english lyrics given we speak portuguese) just up and loved everything about the music. We just carried all these lyrics, riffs and confessions on our chests. I know a band is an organism and many members are responsible for many nuances, but there's something in this special era that's so unique it never clicked again for me the way these songs did. Great conversation. A great point made by Matt that resonated with me - about being in a band with and sharing something that's meaningful to all of you - Years really can go by, with little to no contact, but you always feel a bond, that comes right back to life. I remember a while ago bumping into a former band mate from like 7 years ago - we'd toured in tiny vans, slept on recording studio floors, got paid in gas money, sweated out an EP we loved that didn't get heard enough etc. As we finished chatting, he said something along the lines of 'Just remember, we did SOMETHING, we really did something back then'. And i was thinking, fuck yeah we did - it's nice to share such a bond.

I was just thinking, maybe if you meet up with Matt again or any of the guys from TBS, or just by yourself you could do a video talking about the music industry and mainstream music industry, stuff that people might be assuming or not expecting about the industry. Was being on a major label the dream that most hope it would be? How did it feel to be traveling the world, playing huge amphitheaters, performances on national television, Degrassi, Denny’s restaurant enchilada lol, popular music videos on MTV, etc. lol. (My first ever concert was one of the summer amphitheater shows you did in Chicago back in 2006 with angels and airwaves.) I think it would feel so surreal. It’s crazy to look back and think about how big that genre of music had gotten. It probably rocked the mainstream music industry which is probably why they tried to sign lots of bands at that time - and I would think it was a good decision since lots of these bands sold hundreds of thousands of albums. Also kinda curious if you have any thoughts or theories on why that “scene” eventually kind of died out or became a shell of what it was. - was the music not at the quality it once was? Were people just wanting to move on to something new (EDM)? I would guess it was a combination of a lot of things. I suppose all throughout music history, things come in and out of popularity.

I remember an interview that suggested that TBS was really low on ideas when you both joined. How large an impact did you guys have on where you want to be and louder now? (both of which were my favourite TBS albums).
@TheColorFred4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I would say that the guys in the band were very generous with letting our ideas come to the table right away. The most common thing early on was someone would come in with a riff. I liked to use Eddie's riffs at first because it kept that TBS sound going (Bonus Mosh, Decade, 180 by Summer). Adam would have lyrics and, as the singer/songwriter guy, I would try to put the two things together into a song. As that happened, we all got in a room to finish things up. Everybody had their strong suit, music theory vs. style vs. songwriting... Other songs could be more written by one person, but in any case, we worked as a team and we only did songs that all of us could be excited about. The rest would get cut if we weren't feeling it.
@benhaylock51664 жыл бұрын
It is so inspiring that you can get a group of unfamiliar guys together like that and knock out two of the best albums of the emo era of music. I think of other bands like gob who had to move through a very rough sound together to hit their peak.

Really enjoyed this video. Louder Now is one of my favourite albums of all time, both from a musical standpoint and a recording/mixing/production standpoint. Would love to hear more about working with Eric Valentine if there's enough interest, everything that guy touches is audio gold!

Maybe someday, I can get Eric to do an interview. I'll keep it on the wish list.

I honestly can't decide who I liked better. John or Fred. Louder now is my favorite TBS record, but I also love that John is back. Idk maybe have both at the same time.

This is great. I was really getting into rock when I saw the make damn sure video on MTV. Became the soundtrack of my middle school years. Such great memories. Really love that era of TBS.

The Color Fred I got back into your content after hearing your interview with Shane Told on Lead Singer Syndrome. Great to see that you’re still doing music. It’s also really nice that you interact with all the people commenting on your videos.

I hope someday you guys are invited back to the band to play a multi night concert where you both perform on the nights that WYWTB and Louder Now are played 🤞

Thanks for this! So cool to get a peek behind the scenes of the TBS days. I enjoy all the TBS albums, but it's still WYWTB and Louder Now that are the standouts by far. I remember hearing A Decade Under the Influence on MuchMusic and my mind was immediately blown, it was unlike anything I'd heard before. Crazy, that was 16 years ago...... but you guys have both aged well :)

They were things we worked really hard on and were lucky that people liked it so much. Thanks for all your kind words! ❤️
