Fred, you did an excellent job introducing the Pastorals. I am recommending this video to a guy teaching them in our congregation. What you taught us dovetails with one of my hunches from the earlier Paulines: that Paul was concerned to demonstrate that his proclamation of grace to pagans was not just giving them a free pass (forgiveness with no demands), but was really carrying out God's intention to reclaim them from the devil. For example, Romans 15:15-16: "...the grace God gave me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit." The program of paideia (civilizing, instruction, training) that you describe perfectly aligns with this intention of Paul. --Steve C. Singleton, deeperstudy.com
