This song was a big breakthrough in understanding how bebop soloing worked. Once I was able to put words to the music, it made undecipherable solos suddenly make sense. Fantastic album and a worthy Grammy winner!

Because words are easier comprehend than notes. Once you understand the words, the phrasing all comes together. Listen to the original, then listen to this again. You'll get it (maybe?)

Coltrane, and the Gr8est TO ME of all, Julian Adderley, of Tampa Area FL, Cannonball , BUT, its Jon Hendricks who placed Lyrics to Music and came up with this masterpiece of SONG from the Amer. I saw these guys perform this years ago on the Arsenio Hall show. The ever humble Jon said he would "attempt" to sing the Coltrane line, 'cause that's all one can ever do with Coltrane. I was also lucky enough to visit Jon in the green room at Philharmonic Hall. He struck me as a wholly genuine guy who is in love with life. What a privilege to be alive at the same time as such a genius!

That had to be awesome! I saw the same show and immediately sought out the cd and bought it! I fell in love with Jon and gained a greater appreciation for Al, Bobby and George. I already loved jazz but to have a CLASSIC like Freddy Freeloader music put into words is indescribable! I am in awe of you for meeting Jon. I would constantly relive that moment! And brag about it any chance I got! Lol

I recorded a documentary about the making of this album and song of PBS years ago. I watched the video again and again before going over to the school's resource center to listen to Kind of Blue for the first time. I can't describe the feeling of hearing the instrumental version of these solos after having the vocalese versions already committed to memory. I walked back to my dorm room in a daze. My roomate said "Miles was fuckin' witcha, eh?" Yeah man, for sure.

The Godfather of Vocalise. John Hendricks (1921 - November 22, 2017)

Jon Hendricks wrote the lyrics to this Miles Davis tune way back in the 1960s (when Bobby McFerrin was still a child). It was remade on the 1990 Jon Hendricks album "Freddie Freeloader" and has been performed by a handful of other fine jazz singers (since the Miles, Coltrane, and Cannonball parts are HARD).

The cats that do what you do 're dead Remember that! Now y'know So take it slow, you'll find y'gonna Have a longer row t' hoe And so I say you gotta play another way You oughta add a little depth to your attitude And exercise your mind If y' do you probably will find That fame ain' nothin' but pride 'n' illusion Who's up 'n who's down is all facade I tell ya While we're whirlin' on our axle At a thousan' miles a minute While we think we're standin' still When y'think of that it's kinda peculiar Even so, y'oughta know But alcohol is eatin' up your brain Otherwise it wouldn't function quite as slow Think of this You're not a body but a mind A revelation Don't resist, your body's servin' as a colour-blind Secretin' your immortal soul Ah, what bliss You're free, you're free, you really are To join y' heart and y' mind to your soul, that's the goal Then the soul is the one you heed Food for thought is all the body will need That'll give you the sky, and keep you high forever An' lots of people tend to think All they ever have to do's light a joint'r take a drink T'reach the same euphoric brink Forget it! It never will be so, 'cause alcohol an' them narcotics 'll never do the trick Y'either gotta do it like I said Or mess y'body up by shootin' stuff 'n gittin sick Don't ever listen to your intellect 'Cause intellect abominates the spirit There, I know I'm making my position clear If man would only up his inner ear and hear Few men ever do I've heard what you said An' it stays in my head Well lemme tell y' my impression Everything y' said is straight ahead Absolutely, indeed It sure needs thinkin' about I'm jus' tryin' t'figure it out I wouldn't really believe it if I hadn't really heard it Pretty much o' what I heard is indefinable to me And I really need t'see the relationship Between another fella's soul and his body Somebody's gonna have t' make it clear to me How havin' a teensy-weensy itsy-bitsiest taste with Freddie Is apt t'make a fella's life unsteady So pour me a drink 'n lemme think Raise y'glass, make'em clink Bottoms up Now I'm ready for the game Might as well get in it 'cause by laying out I'm never gonna win it Let's have a party, drinkin' hearty Gonna drink up 'till we drop Lemme have another one, that's the trick Y'want it with soda or y'wanna drink it straight Way y'burpin' got me thinkin' maybe it might'a been somethin' you ate Relax 'n let's drink steady it's on freeload Freddie Drink up, everybody, thanks t'Freddie I'm talkin''bout Freddie, 'cause Freddie is steady Talkin''bout coppin' his buddy some booze Wanna get drunk f'free? That's easy, Freddie'll pop a little Take it off the top a little, so his boss'll never even miss it Drink up, it's Freddie's treat You buy one, he'll give y'one Acquaintances never leave Freddie's dry You're never really ever gonna find a cheaper high I'm tellin' the truth, yeah I'm sittin' right here one evenin' Just coolin, I'm tellin'y'man I was broke 'N'bout t'beg me a drink an' that's no joke That's when ol' Freddie spoke 'n' he said: Don't worry 'bout it, man 'Cause I can dig it that' you got a thirst goin' without it, man I'm here t'tell you there is nothing worse That's the reason why I'm inclined t' let a fella freeload Because of that they call me Freddie Freeloader
