Cowabunga, dude!! Hang 10 on this insightful lesson!! I strive and struggle to come up with dynamite concepts that break the ole E blues mold and D.H. definitely delivers here!! David did not wipe out on this cool ditty!! Jim C.

That's interesting that you referenced a Warner brothers cartoon from the 40s here.... I watched a lot of those cartoons as a kid and I think it had a tremendous influence on my later musical tastes .....great lesson love Freddie Greens playing ...

Thank you. I learn so many interesting useful things from you, and it just keeps moving the ball forward. I started out thinking as a practical matter the definition of blues was a Les Paul and a Marshall. Not anymore! Now the satisfaction is in chord lines that never stop moving and the myriad of chord voicing just waiting to be used, and then knowing how and why it works. Little things like you pointing in this video how the chords are following the walking bass line makes sense out of the rest of it. Plus I’m teaching, so that knowledge goes forward. Thumbs up. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise on these videos.

Good info, nice teaching style and demeanor - been a major fan of the Hot Tuna-Jorma blues fingerstyle since Day One -- adding the theoretcial elements of this lesson with 3-tone voicings has made it easy to understand -- it has simplified my onw 4-tone jazz chord orchestral voicings (adding the B string) - thank you for the contribution to the arsenal of guitar knowledge on the web David

David, I read and subscribe to Acoustic Guitar. Write an article sometime about a 'natural leftie', me, playing right handed. When I first picked up the guitar I wasn't sure if I should play lefthanded or if I would be handicapped playing right handed. I met a good player, Joe Craven, who played right handed but signed autographs with his left hand. I said, 'hey, you're left handed', and he said 'yeah?' A revelation for me. Thought it might be a good idea for the magazine. Thanks for the cool lesson. Nice looking Martin.

Hi David, New subscriber here. This was a sensational video. It's exactly the style of play I'm trying to acquire. Here's hoping you'll follow up with the next 8 bars in future lessons, & maybe variations on Freddie's approach. Cheers!

Always a treat to see your latest foray, great little lesson! BTW, is that an internal mic I see peeking out through the soundhole of that weather beaten axe of yours?
@FretboardConfidential7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Paul. Yes, it is! When I got that Martin, Flip Scipio put in one of the first Fishman Blender systems. He spent a lot of time tweaking it, and it showed, because I played years of solo gigs where I just showed up and plugged everything in, and the sound guy (when there was one!) would freak out about how easy it was to make it sound good.

So great when a system like that works so well! Plug it in and go! I've got a dual system but no mic in one of my guitars (a Breedlove vintage). It's a Baggs with an under saddle pick up and the I Beam attached to the bridge plate, has a mix and volume control inside the edge of the sound hole. Pretty cool but I've always wondered how the mic plus pick up would be, I suspected that it would take a little tweaking, nice that you had Flip to set that up for you!

It was really nice; it's sort of retired now, after my (25 year old?!) Blender sort of conked out and I found myself playing "acoustic" with other guitars and/or bass and drums so often that the mic was just a wash even if it sounded amazing solo. So at this point I've got what sounds like a similar setup to yours in my Collings, with a K&K under the saddle and a Fishman Rare Earth - magnetic and mini-mic blend - in the soundhole.
