For people like me that grew up in Spain, specially the area Montserrat was from and near Barcelona, where the great olimpics 1992 in Barcelona took place, this is a great memory. Those Olympic games were opened with a ceremony that was pure art, quality, genius ideas and incredible talent. They still are one of the most memorable ones in history. Montserrat was a unique singer, so was he.

Freddie loved opera and he was a big fan of her. He said that Montsy had the most beautiful voice he had ever heard and that he was honored that a super star like her agree to meet a simple man like him. Freddie's last dream came true, to sing a duet with her. If only Freddie were alive in 1992, the live performance potentially could have been the Greatest Duet Performance the World would have ever seen, as iconic as Live Aid was.

@@bluebell3720 According to Montserrat, Freddie told her in 1988 & she makes no mention of an attempted kiss. She said, they were in the studio, doing final work on the album (recording ended June 1988, album released Oct. 1988). Discussion turned to performing Barcelona (which had been sent to the Olympic committee in 1987) at the 1992 games. Freddie said he wouldn’t be there. At first she thought he didn’t want to go. He then explained his illness & that he wouldn’t be alive by then.

This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Montserrat mentioned it was a great service towards the people who never listend to opera before, because their collaboration has definitely increased the popularity of this genre. Pls, check out The Golden Boy and How can I Go On at Barcelona La Nit 1988. You won't be disappointed.

And good thing too, classical is super underrated among newer generations. There is still a pretty decently sized following even among young people, but the optics is that it's a genre for intellectuals, while I think it's not true. Saying that you don't like classical music is like saying you don't like metal or rap: all three genres are huge and have such variety that everyone can find something inside each that they'll like
@kendallneason3645

Incredible to think a rock singer could not only sing with and keep up with a world class opera singer but that Freddie Mercury along with Mike Moran composed the music! It’s classical music! Freddie and Monsey combined two very different genres perfectly to make an amazing hit album. Freddie Mercury wrote Barcelona by 1988 for Monsey and to submit to the 1992 Olympic Games. He knew he had AIDS by then but he continued to work to make incredible music until he was too ill to do so. I adore the friendship these two singers formed.

They were the dearest of friends and it shows on stage. Montsy of course one of the best opera voices of her time, a warm, powerful, pitch perfect soprano. And Freddie Mercury a 4 octave powerhouse that easily keeps up with one of the best trained Opera singers the world has ever seen. his voice has more fry in it contrasting perfectly. You hear both their voices neither overpowering nor drowning out the other. perfection, two legendary divas
