Spot on description: Montserrat said that with this song, she asked Freddie to sing it in an operatic style, and that she gave him tips/pointers on how to it.

Freddie Mercury composed the music to this and he sang a demo (no lyrics only vocals called Exercises in Free Love) and sent it to her and then she wrote the lyrics. You should check the demo out as well--his voice is very different in it.

Freddie worried his fans wouldn't recognize him or like him singing fully Operatic. Montserrat got him to do it here. Freddie was asked to do Operatic work such as Phantom of The Opera, Rocky Horror Picture Show (movie)various musicals, but Freddie wasn't interested plus he didn't think his voice would hold up 7 days a week. Freddie with training could have sung anything he wanted, but because he wasn't trained he developed throat nodules, so if he didn't rest his throat it would cause trouble. John Deacon said this album was his favourite of all the solo projects his bandmates created. It was such a brave choice for Freddie to make. I would have loved to see his record company's reaction to hearing his follow up album to Mr Bad Guy was an Operatic album.

In Queen he mostly sang higher with a tenor voice, but his natural is a baritone, in some late Queen songs he used it!

Freddie recorded his cover version of The Great Pretender in Mike's home studio and wanted to release it as a solo single, but there was nothing to the B side. Excercises in Free Love was born, and became an appropriate piece of music to the B side. Ensueno was the only one song on the whole album, when Freddie and Montserrat were at the same place at same time, and sang into the same microphone.

It's strange to hear Freddie singing as a baritone, but I think it's a beautiful contrast to Montserrat's voice in this one. What if he had sung in what she said is his normal speaking tone throughout his rock and roll career? He chose to be a tenor because he thought it suited the genre better. What do you think, Justin?

It's right what you say, this song, previously called "Exercises in Free Love", is a very intimate place in this album, just two voices and a piano, nothing more, but what a great effect...

I hate myself for this but whenever I hear this song I picture Bugs Bunny at the piano singing to Elmer Fudd …… and I swear I am a true Freddie Fan ! ( Freddie would forgive me bc he had a sick sense of humor too ) Great reaction !
